2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Once a real prospect, Gillies has played a mere 106 games in three years since coming over in the Cliff Lee trade. Injuries have completely derailed his career and cut into his once-80-grade speed. In the past, he had projected as a legitimate leadoff hitter at a premium position, displaying patience at the plate and using his incredible wheels to track down anything and everything in center field. At 24, his prospect status hasnít entirely evaporated, but it's running dry after three busted seasons. If he doesnít start the season in Lehigh Valley with the Triple-A club, he should get there eventually, but with Ben Revere in town, Gillies's future likely isn't in Philadelphia.
2011 Part of the take from the trade that sent Cliff Lee to Seattle, Tyson Gillies' season was tarnished by charges of drug possession (later dropped) and poor play, as he proved his 2009 campaign was just another High Desert mirage.
2010 The position player thrown in on the Cliff Lee deal, this Canadian flyer becomes a top outfield prospect in the Phillies' system almost by default. Squint, and you can see Brett Butler, because the positives from his first full season are clear: heaping helpings of speed and defense. The question is how much he'll lose to leaving the Cal League's bandboxes and making the move to Double-A. His walk rate of almost 9.4 percent was outstanding for someone so young in a High-A league, but his power was almost entirely a product of his home park; his road ISO was .094. His youth is his best armor against such considerations, but power's less critical to his game than how much of his OBP he retains against better pitching and how much of his battting average survives hitting against better defenses at higher levels.

2012-11-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Should Phillies fans be more thankful for Darin Ruf or Cody Asche? And will we ever get to be thankful for Tyson Gillies?
(Governator from Philly)
Ruf over Asche, but don't get too excited about either player. Gillies can really run and play some defense, but he's a fifth outfielder due to lack of plate discipline and power. (Jason A. Churchill)
2012-01-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)Will Tyson Gillies reestablish himself as a prospect?
(Tom from Boston)
Hasn't been good since 2009, and that was in the best hitting environment in baseball. Not a good combination. (Kevin Goldstein)
