2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Freeman spent the previous winter lifting weights. A typical offseason pursuit for a professional ballplayer—except, apparently, for Freeman, who claimed it was the first time he had done so. The hard work with the dumbbells paid off as he increased his power production while also improving his walk and strikeout rates in 2012. Freeman is becoming one of the top first basemen in the National League based on his age, defensive reputation, and offensive production to date. He’s also on his way to earning the Captain Marvel Jr. nickname.
2012 Finding a harmony between the scouting reports and defensive metrics about Freeman is impossible. Folks who watched Freeman know about his picking-and-scooping abilities as well as his strong arm, characteristics that fan the flames of contention. Freeman’s offensive output is less controversial. He became the youngest first baseman in club history to belt 20-plus home runs during the regular season, and produced at rates better than league-average. The downsides to Freeman’s season at the plate were his strikeouts (more than expected), issues against left-handed pitching, and wayward plate discipline. Still, receiving as much offense as the Braves did from a 21-year-old in his freshman campaign is a blessing more than a curse. The big question is whether Freeman will be worthy of the Captain Marvel Jr. nickname, or if he just becomes a solid everyday first baseman.
2011 Despite struggling in 41 Double-A games at the end of 2009, the Braves sent the 20-year-old Freeman to Triple-A for 2010. What initially looked like an over-aggressive assignment turned out to be just right as Freeman improved throughout the year, batting .375/.432/.595 after the All-Star break and reaching the big leagues in September. Some scouts think Freeman is a better pure hitter than Jason Heyward, with a batting average that will make up for an average walk rate and power. Add in very good defensive skills and barring a 1-for-31 spring, Freeman will be the Opening Day first baseman and the long-term answer at a position that was a revolving door in 2010.
2010 Freeman looked like one of the better young hitters around in 2008, when he hit .316/.378/.521 for Low-A Rome as an 18-year-old, but some holes were exposed in his game last year. While a hand injury is something of a mitigating factor, Freeman still hasn't tapped into his raw power, and remains an impatient hitter at the plate. First-base prospects can't just be good hitters, they have to be great ones. Most scouts project Freeman as more of a high-average, 20-homer, 50-walk guy, and that's merely average for the position.
2009 The Braves’ second-round pick in 2007, Freeman established himself as their first baseman of the future with a monster full-season debut last year. A good defender with a strong arm, he has the potential to be a middle-of-the-order hitter for the next contending Braves team, as his swing is built for both average and increasing power. He also shares a secret identity with Captain Marvel Jr., which probably didn't get much play in his high school but would have been a big thing had he been born about 1930.

2014-10-23 14:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Freddie Freeman 2015+ ? True regression or primed for a Rizzo-esque rebound?
(marty from WA)
Freeman just turned 25 years old and was sniffing close to a .500 SLG in mid-August before a late-season swoon brought him down below last season's ratios, though the OBP was still a major asset at .386 for the year. The Rizzo comp is fine, though Freeman probably has the higher floor with a slightly less-elevated ceiling. I expect a step forward for Freeman next season, finishing closer to 2013 numbers in the power department while sustaining a .290-ish average. (Doug Thorburn)
2014-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)How high are you on Freddie Freeman going forward? Does the power breakout ever come?
(Eddie from Pennsylvania)
Eddie, I think Freeman is a pretty solid player with a chance to improve more. The power potential is obviously there; he has the frame, the ability to hit for power to all fields, and even the odd backstory—he didn't start lifting weights until a few seasons ago—to go with it. I doubt he'll ever have a five-year stretch like Adrian Gonzalez did, where he hits around .300 with 30 bombs per season, but it wouldn't surprise me if he had a season or two like that at some point. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Am I crazy to expect a big breakout from Freddie Freeman? I'm thinking 35 HR, 530 SLG.
(Moose from NE)
I addressed Freeman's breakout chances earlier. I wouldn't put the house on 35 home runs but I could see him adding strength in the years to come, and perhaps having a .300/30 season or two. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-02-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)I can keep one of the following three first basemen (10 team h2h 5x5). Where is the value? Matt Adams at the cost of a 12th round pick? Freddie Freeman at the cost of 7th? Mike Napoli at the cost of a 12th?
(Andrew from Canada)
Freeman at the cost of a 7th rounder is very good value in my mind. I would go there. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)A fantasy baseball question - unsure if this is the right Q&A for it but anyways ... I have Machado (and love him but I also have Castellanos to fall back on for 3B, along with planning on drafting the ultimate utility man, Ben Zobrist) and was offered Freddie Freeman. It is an eight-man keeper league and I have Manny for $5 and Freeman is $12. The only reason I am considering it is my concern for Manny's knee. Any knowledge on his progression/healing and, then, is this is a fair trade considering everything? I am leaning towards no since I think Manny will be a stud for years to come but so will Freeman in my opinion. Thanks
(Tony from The tundra)
It might not seem like the right place... but it is. I think you keep Machado. I like Freeman, more than people might think - but Machado is a potential superstar at a more valuable position. I'm concerned about the knee as well, but if this is a long-term league then I think you take that risk. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-11-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)been in a debate with a friend...who would you rather have over the next 5-7 years, Freddie Freeman or Will Meyers? How close is the decision, and what is the deciding factor for you?
(ray6072 from Lousiana)
Freeman, it's not that close, and because there's no chance of failure for Freeman at this point. His floor is average. Myers' floor is still very much Delmon Young. (Sam Miller)
2013-07-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Jason, who do you like more as a prospect? Nick Williams or Ronald Guzman? Thanks!
(Joe from Dallas)
Guzman has a tough profile, as he is already limited to 1B. But I really love his approach to hitting and the ease in which he does it. I've already spoken about my love for Williams as well, especially the bat-to-ball skills. But his overall game is very rudimentary, and he could flame out before bringing it all together. THe more I watch Guzman, the more Freddie Freeman I see in the swing. (Jason Parks)
2013-05-22 18:00:00 (link to chat)Most fantasy experts have said they don't see 30HR power ever coming from Freddie Freeman. Since he hit 20 a couple a years in a row in his early 20's this stance has always surprised me. Obviously he's not getting there this year, but can you see him being an eventual seasonal threat for 30 HR's? Thanks
(Dave from NY)
Yes, in a year that he doesn't start off as slowly as he has in this one. The injury didn't help. (Jason Collette)
2013-04-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Buying or selling Atlanta's streak as being something bigger than just a nice early-season stretch?
(Dan Rozenson from Washington, DC)
Thanks for the question, Dan.

The Braves aren't going to play .850 ball all year, but there's no question in my mind that they're one of the best teams in baseball. As I wrote in the WYNTK a few days ago, their 12-2 start is even more impressive when you consider the players—Freddie Freeman, Brandon Beachy, Brian McCann, et al—who are on the shelf. There's a lot more where this is coming from. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-02-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)Auction Draft, Dynasty League. Do you go stars/scrubs, or do you try for balance? A prospect draft will follow the MLB draft.
(Donnie from Running Errands)
In a league with a long reserve list, I generally prefer stars and scrubs. You're not going to find players for your reserve list who can do what a Ryan Braun or a Miguel Cabrera can do, but you might find players who can do what Freddie Freeman and Dexter Fowler can do. Maximize the top slots on your roster; if you do a good job picking up prospects and have a deep farm system, the playing time at the bottom of your roster will come. (Mike Gianella)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)My impression is PECOTA has been noticeably pessimistic when it comes to Freddie Freeman for the last few years. Example: this year PECOTA has Freeman to 448/335 (slightly worse than last year) when most other systems have him closer to 480/350. Is there something about him that historically hasn't been development friendly (size, poor FRAA numbers, etc)?
(goiter6 from MN (and not a Braves fan))
He's still VERY young so I think PECOTA is tempering excitement as we could definitely see another dip before he becomes what he will be for years. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of this trade? 12 team NL Only keeper league 4X4 Kris Medlen $1 2014 for Edwin Jackson $3 2014 Freddie Freeman $10 option year Lucas Duda $1 option year
(grandslam28 from Chicago)
I like the general idea of trying to sell high on Medlen, but Freeman — whom I like as a breakout candidate — is the only player in that return package that really piques my interest. If you're going to move on from Medlen, I'd try to find a better secondary piece. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-03-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)With the movement of 1B out of the NL, which of the young NL 1B's do you see moving to the top of the position?
(will.I.ain't from roaming)
Ike Davis if he stays healthy--particularly with the fences moving in. I'm not sure what to make of Freddie Freeman, Paul Goldschmidt, or Anthony Rizzo just yet. (R.J. Anderson)
2011-12-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Ultimately, who do you think will have the better MLB career, Freddie Freeman or Justin Smoak?
(Anello from Chicago)
Smoak (Jason Parks)
2011-07-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)I have Jesus Montero, Freddie Freeman, Kyle Blanks, and Pedro Alvarez in a dynasty... looming logjam at 1B? If they do all end up at first how would you rate them based on their bats alone?
(Jquinton82 from NY)
Man, that's a fantastic softball team you have there. Risk-averse ranking: Freeman, Montero, Alvarez, Blanks. If you have a taste for risk, flip the first two. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-07-21 16:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you like better for fantasy the rest of the season, Billy Butler or Freddie Freeman?
(Dennis from LA)
I'll go with Freeman because of the power edge. Butler simply doesn't hit enough over the fence and I want as much help in the counting categories now as I can get. (Jason Collette)
2011-07-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Freddie Freeman?
(Jquinton82 from NY)
Still Captain Marvel, Jr. to me, and you can call me a nerd--I don't mind. Hitting .298/.362/493 May 1 on, and you'll take that. I've really enjoyed the progress he's made throughout the year. You'd like him to get a better handle on the strike zone at some point or the pressure to keep up the batting average will never recede, but I'm not complaining right now. (Steven Goldman)
2011-04-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are you a believer in Freddie Freeman and Jose Tabata? Can they sustain anything close to their current walk rates (Freeman 12%, Tabata 12.5%)? Which of the two do you think will be more valuable going forward?
(Dennis from LA)
Tabata had some solid walk rates in the minors--an improvement on his 6.3 percent rate from 2010 wouldn't be a surprise, especially given his start, but he doesn't have nearly enough plate appearances to say this is totally for real yet, either.

It's the same deal with Freeman. He had some solid walk rates in the minors--pretty good, not amazing--but has good strike zone judgment and low strikeout rates. Tabata is the better fantasy player for 2011, thanks to steals and his position--Freeman, as a first baseman, is going to have a harder time standing out at his position. (Marc Normandin)
2011-04-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thank you for answering my earlier question. Who do you like better over the next few years in a fantasy league that counts OBP: Freddie Freeman or Brandon Belt?
(Dennis from LA)
Brandon Belt. His start to 2011 wasn't great, but it's just a few weeks, and he is young. I actually wrote a piece talking about the two a few weeks ago, and I came down on Belt's side. (Marc Normandin)
