BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 Fireballing Sosa was included in the Jeff Keppinger trade and has a lively arm—topping 95 mph sometimes with a biting slider to accompany the heat. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a third pitch, and when he was used in relief, he produced that ugly Fresno line leading to his demotion and eventual trade as the Giants gave up on him. In his major-league time, he allowed a .300/.390/.500 batting line during the first 25 pitches of his starts before settling down somewhat, further reinforcing the idea that there won't be a seamless transition to the bullpen. If Sosa were 23 years old, there would be a lot of excitement over his pure stuff, but he's made alarmingly little progress during his six years of professional baseball.
2011 The hard-throwing Sosa has never developed the command or secondary pitches necessary to succeed as a starter, something the Giants seemed to realize in his Triple-A debut, finally, mercifully moving him to the bullpen only to return him to the Fresno rotation at the end of the season. Regardless, Sosa’s future lies in relief, and the sooner the Giants accept that, the sooner he might be able to contribute to the major-league team.
2010 Sosa keeps making incremental progress towards top prospect status, but combines that and his mid-90s heat with a variety of nagging concerns. He's lost considerable time to injuries the last couple of seasons, but no major, arm-opened-up cut jobs: a knee and a strained pectoral muscle in '08, and an upper back strain in '09 eventually divined from an initially labeled case of arm fatigue. The time lost has kept his off-speed stuff from developing as quickly as the Giants might wish, which is what will make the difference in making up lost ground in his strikeout rate. He's supposed to be fine for 2010, but for now he's a promising arm longer on promises made than promises kept.
2009 After a breakthrough year at High-A in 2007, Henry Sosa took a step backward last year, repeating the level with less success while fighting health and mechanical issues, though his mid-90s-plus heat still intrigues.
2008 Brought to you by the "Where Did He Come From?" files, Sosa entered last year as just another generic strong-armed thrower and ended it as the top pitching prospect in the Giants organization. With a fastball that sits in the low to mid 90s and touches 98 mph, he can dominate on his heater alone, but he also features a power curve that flashes plus at times. Like many young arms, his control lags behind his stuff, but he's one of the few arms in the system with big-time upside.

2009-11-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)I like Willingham a lot. It seems like the Nats do too, so what do you think the Giants would have to part with to get him?
(Gregjitsu from Still Southern Cal)
Well, he won't be a free agent until 2012, so it will take more than it took to get Ryan Garko (which was Single A pitcher Scott Barnes, who was considered one of the team's better pitching prospects) but nothing along the lines of Bumgarner. Maybe someone like Henry Sosa. (Eric Seidman)
