2013 Berken's career has been plagued with injuries: Tommy John surgery, a torn labrum, frayed rotator cuff... He started 2012 with a hamstring injury, but it didn't last long enough to keep him from pitching during the season, moving back into a starting role after a conversion to middle relief. Now that he's healthy, the thing that's holding Berken back is a lack of discernible pitching ability. Moving him back to the bullpen may be the best hope to salvage any kind of value from him.
2012 Giving up on Berken as a starter, the O's moved him to the bullpen at the start of 2010 with great success, watching him post a 3.59 FIP and using him in high leverage situations before he was diagnosed with a frayed rotator cuff and a slightly torn labrum in August. Returning for 2011, Berken posted solid peripherals, but his ERA was skewed by a seven-run, two-homer game in July. The story emerged later that Berken had been experiencing forearm issues, which soon rose to his elbow, leading to an eventual DL stint. If Berken can come back and remain healthy, he'd be a serviceable middle reliever or long man, but having undergone Tommy John surgery in 2005 and now dealing with shoulder and elbow troubles the past two years, that's far from a given.
2011 Berken shifted to the bullpen after a less than promising attempt at starting in 2009; his stuff hadn’t portended advancement beyond the back of the rotation anyway. The change was instantly successful, but perhaps because Berken was one of the few Orioles pitchers with reliable results, Dave Trembley and Juan Samuel worked him hard, asking him to make 12 appearances of between two and five innings. By the All-Star break, Berken had already pitched 50.2 innings with a 1.95 ERA, and he lasted just nine more games, getting hit hard before being diagnosed with a frayed rotator cuff and a slightly torn labrum. Surgery was not indicated, and the right-hander is expected to be ready for spring training. Showalter never got a chance to establish his own role for Berken, so his 2011 outlook depends both on his health and how the manager chooses to utilize him.
2010 Bowie's 2008 rotation—Tillman, Bergesen, Hernandez, and Berken—became the first quartet from one team to each make 10 starts in Double-A one year and 10 starts in the majors the next. Surprisingly, Berken, the one who was actually sent back to Bowie to start the season, was the one who made the most major-league starts. He had bad luck; his ERA was more than a run higher than it should have been. He suffered through a nine-game losing streak, was demoted to the bullpen without ever pitching a game in relief, and was always on the edge of being sent back to Triple-A, but he hung in there. He throws four pitches, but none of them very well.
2007 A sixth-round pick out of Clemson last year, Jason Berken showed excellent control, but when opponents hit the ball they hit it hard.
