BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2010 Alan Horne had the pitches to succeed in the majors, but hasn't been healthy since 2007, and it's hard to know what he has left or if he can stay off the shelf long enough to use it.
2009 Alan Horne's biceps and rotator cuff were only partially torn, but his season was irreparably damaged; suspect mechanics and persistent arm problems suggest it won't be his last lost to injury, but it may have been his last as a starter.
2008 Horne was hot stuff coming out of high school; the Indians made him their first-round pick in the 2001 draft, but lost him to college. Four years later, his stock had cooled, and the Yankees got him in the 11th round. In between, he pitched for three different schools and had Tommy John surgery. In two professional seasons, he's worked his way around to being hot stuff again, posting a terrific strikeout rate and showing decent control with low-90s stuff and three offspeed pitches. Caveats: no pitcher is quite as good as he looks at Trenton thanks to Old Man Delaware; Horne's mechanics aren't the cleanest in the world and he already has one surgery on his record; he was gassed at the end of the season and put up a 6.00 ERA in the final month. Those matters aside, Horne would be on the cusp of a major league job in most organizations, but with the Yankees' depth of pitching prospects he's just another arm and could wind up in the pen before he gets a chance to start.
