| Date | Question | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| 2011-12-14 13:00:00 | Who would you rather have: Cameron Maybin or Desmond Jennings? (Anello from Chicago) | Jennings. Not even close. (Jason Parks) |
| 2011-09-06 14:00:00 | What's your take on year 2 of the Jed Hoyer era in San Diego? (Arby's from Good mood food) | Why wasn't Heath Bell traded? ...I have to admit I haven't seen too many Friars games this year, being generally more focused on the AL East, but it's really hard for me to come to a judgment in that other than Chase Headley, Cameron Maybin, Kyle Blanks, Corey Luebke, and Mat Latos, and (likely) Anthony Rizzo, I see a lot of guys who are basically just interim types. I wish they had gotten more playing time for James Darnell. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2011-07-21 13:00:00 | Do see Cameron Maybin turning the corner this season and what do you see as his potential peak? (Rich from Maryland) | His home road splits are CRAZY. 200 points more of OPS on the road than at home. He's a really good CF, a hard worker & a great kid. I feel like he's a legit ML CF yeah, but the numbers are always gonna look worse b/c he plays his home games below the Marine layer. (Mike Ferrin) |
| 2011-04-25 13:00:00 | How many more AB's do you need to see before you can declare me a bust? (Travis Snider from Texas) | Well, you're in your age-23 season, so there is reason to be patient. The results have been disappointing thus far, but, like with Cameron Maybin, I'm willing to be patient given you spent years that probably could have/should have been played in the minors in the majors instead. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2011-02-22 13:00:00 | Who is more likely to break out this year, Desmond Jennings or Cameron Maybin? What type of stats do you see from the two of them? (Sean from DC) | I think Maybin has room to develop into a good player. I'm still a fan of his tools. I think he could put up this line: 010010001100110 (Jason Parks) |
| 2011-01-18 13:00:00 | Going into the 2011 season, are the Padres better on paper than they were going into the 2010 season? (Jeff from Bay Area) | I'm glad someone asked me this question because I've been looking for an excuse to say "Yes, yes they are." The rotation is better, the bullpen is better, the defense is better. The lineup is worse, sure, but they have healthy Ludwick in there, Orlando Hudson instead of David Eckstein, Cameron Maybin's potential instead of Tony Gwynn's impression of his uncle at the plate...if they aren't better, they are at least as good. Gonzalez is one of the best players in baseball, but he's one guy, and the Padres upgraded in multiple spots. Hawpe should hit if he's healthy, too, and I think that will make this team surprise a lot of people again. Though not 90 wins surprise them. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-12-20 13:00:00 | I am still not sure whether I should keep holding on to Cameron Maybin. What are the odds that he becomes Mike Cameron at best ? (Spirou from Montreal) | Not seeing it. He still hasn't learned how to run routes in the outfield and Mike Cameron was a defensive beast. Maybin might grow into the offense of Cameron, but the defense ain't happening. (Eric Seidman) |
| 2010-12-20 13:00:00 | When does a prospect/young player cross the line and become a bust?
Would you consider Alex Gordon, Brandon Wood, Cameron Maybin, Andy Marte, and Joel Guzman busts? (Steve from Las Vegas) | Andy Marte - yes. Brandon Wood - yes. Cameron Maybin is approaching that territory though he could still be a somewhat useful major leaguer. Alex Gordon is only going to be a bust relative to expectations. He can still be a productive major leaguer, unlike say Andy LaRoche, but he is not going to become the perennial all star many originally thought. To me, there is no clear line of demarcation but rather a situation that has a certain feel to it. Wood has shown no signs of improvement, nor has Maybin. Gordon has. (Eric Seidman) |
| 2010-12-07 13:00:00 | So you Red Sox joy counterbalances your Padres' sadness on the Gonzalez deal? (formersd from San Diego) | There really isn't any Padres' sadness, honestly. Here is my thinking.
As great as Adrian Gonzalez is--and he's one of the top players in the game--he is one guy. The Padres had reason to believe the 2011 team could be a bit better, with an improved rotation, a full season of (healthy) Ryan Ludwick, Cameron Maybin possibly blossoming in center with another year in the majors, Kyle Blanks coming back from his TJ surgery, etc. If they acquire Brendan Ryan in a trade to man shortstop as is expected, and then sign someone like Derrek Lee to play first base, then you're talking about a team that could still win something like 82-85 games. Then, in 2012, you have Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo, Simon Castro and maybe Drew Cumberland coming up if he continues to tear up the minors. That is an exciting roster all of a sudden, and it was brought about without fielding a terrible team. The Padres can trade Bell and Ludwick in July and still have a decent team, assuming Aaron Cunningham or Kyle Blanks can slot into Ludwick's place and they bump Mike Adams up to the role of closer. The gloom and doom mentality coming out of San Diego after the trade of Adrian Gonzalez is almost enough to make me start a Padres' blog in response. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-11-11 13:00:00 | Is it too early to give up on Alex Gordon, Cameron Maybin, and Brandon Wood? (Bobby from LA) | 26, 23, and 25 years old-- I don't think so. But it's certainly possible that none of them are as good as once hoped. (Matt Swartz) |
| 2010-08-26 13:00:00 | Who is the better bet to produce in 2011? - Alex Gordon or Cameron Maybin? (Chad from Land of Unrealized Potential) | What a question! I'll go with Alex Gordon. Cameron Maybin still hasn't shown me much I'm impressed by, even in the minors (though I do expect him to breakout eventually, this isn't me giving up) while Gordon has had some poor luck while back in the majors. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-07-06 14:00:00 | Career All-Star Appearances for Cameron Maybin, 0.5, Over or Under? (Bobby from The Zoo) | I'll take the over. If you'd said .7, I might have answered differently. I like his chances of making a fractional All-Star appearance, but only if the fraction is relatively low. (Ben Lindbergh) |
| 2010-07-09 13:00:00 | Combined career all-star appearances for Brandon Wood, Andy Marte, and Cameron Maybin, 0.5, Over or Under? (Karen from NY) | Now there's a depressing thought. I never thought Brandon Wood's approach would translate to the majors--I've been harping on this for five years or so, seriously--but I also didn't think he'd tank *this* hard. Cameron Maybin's ceiling seems to have quickly fallen from "Eric Davis, maybe?" to "Mike Cameron, maybe?" to "Let's just keep our current outfield out there for now". Such an odd situation. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-02-18 14:00:00 | Post-hype prospect showdown. Better year in 2010: Homer Bailey or Cameron Maybin? (holgado from pelham, ny) | Bailey. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2010-02-05 13:00:00 | Is this the year for Cameron Maybin's breakout? (Scott from NJ) | I say he turns it on by June, but what's his ceiling these days? Are we still looking at Eric Davis, or is he Mike Cameron? (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-01-21 13:00:00 | Thanks for the chat. Do you think Cameron Maybin will finally realize his potential this year? if so, what is that potential? 10hr/50rbi/15sb reasonable to expect? (Fish Fan from Florida) | I think he's capable of being Mike Cameron once he puts things together, but I think I'm also lower on him than most. Maybe a poor man's Cameron is a good comp for the 2010 Cameron.
That sentence is confusing out of context. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-01-13 13:00:00 | Who has the better year in 2010 Cameron Maybin or Carlos Gonzalez? (cubfan131 from IA) | Cameron Maybin. I know it's getting to the point where he either has to put up or shut up but I just think he has the talent to be a superstar. I'm not so sure that I can saw that about Gonzalez. (John Perrotto) |
| 2009-09-10 13:00:00 | Cameron Maybin's stance and approach at the plate seem to be improved since his recall. What are your thoughts on him? Is his ceiling still as high as it was before this season? (Jorge Posada from NY) | You have mistaken me for Kevin Goldstein or perhaps someone who knows about batting stances. (Will Carroll) |
| 2009-08-21 14:00:00 | What are your thoughts on Cameron Maybin? (bellfree from Colorado) | I believe. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2009-07-24 16:30:00 | Is there still hope for Cameron Maybin? While he was initially projected as an Eric Davis type, his power seems to have disappeared. Can he become anything more than a CF with a little speed and pop? Thanks.
(Fish Fan from FLA) | There is PLENTY of hope, but the Marlins need to get off their butts and bring him up. I don't know what more he has to prove in the minors. (Eric Seidman) |
| 2009-05-04 14:00:00 | What are your thoughts on Dexter Fowler for this year and his long term potential? (mgaynor7475 from Cumberland, RI) | I'm on record as loving, just absolutely loving, Fowler. I think he's already a major-league center fielder, a better player than, say, Cameron Maybin is. His power is still coming, and he'll have to manage his contact rate, but he'll hit .270/.340/.410 this year and go from there. I could see him peaking like Curtis Granderson, maybe a bit better. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-03-10 14:30:00 | Hi Joe,
Whoever wrote the Marlin chapter has them "making a play at the wild card right now." Pecota has them at 69 wins. That's quite a disparity. What your take on the Fish (Lenny Dee from Portland OR) | I like when that happens, and I think it shows the value of having an analyst's take as well as the system's. I think the Marlins have a heck of a core. However, their defensive problems and OBP issues limit their upside. I'm hopeful that Cameron Maybin can hit enough to play CF and help the defense, because that staff needs a true CF. Overall, I say 78 wins. 2010 should be a fun year.
That's all on-field, of course. They remain something of a disaster overall because of the relationship with the city and the fans. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-07-03 13:00:00 | Any more minor leaguers likely to get the call and make a splash this year? (Jay from Madison) | I think that Cameron Maybin and the PIT outfielders might be viable, depending on how quickly/if they trade either Bay or Nady. (Jeff Erickson) |
| 2008-04-23 13:00:00 | Cameron Maybin's K problems seem to be getting worse, not better. How concerning is this?
(Juan Duran from (Billings, MT)) | It's concerning where you start to wonder if he's really just Mike Cameron in the end. I'm not convinced of that . . . yet. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2008-03-11 12:00:00 | Is it possible that Justin Upton is a little undervalued going into this season? i.e., is Upton *more* ready to mash than he is thought to be? What kind of season do you envision for the kid? (Humphrey from Phoenix, AZ) | In fairness, there's a little Cameron Maybin here, in that Upton was kind of rushed to the majors to cover a problem for a team in contention. He has more experience and had more success at higher levels than Maybin did, but I'm not convinced he's ready to be an MLB right fielder at 20. Love him, love his upside, think his slipping #5 in the NASA draft was criminal, but just not excited about '08. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-01-28 13:00:00 | Who is the better bet to be an impact CF - Desmond Jennings or Cameron Maybin? (Chad from St Paul) | I think Maybin is the better bet because he's closer to the Major Leagues, and in terms of raw tools, he still grades out better than Jennings. I agree that the strikeouts and groundouts are concerning, but let's be real here, Maybin did all that and still hit .300/.400/.500 in the minors. Plus you move Maybin to the NL, and he's definitely the better bet. (Bryan Smith) |
