2010 Gutierrez has all of the talent in the world, starting with a 92-94 mph sinker that he can dial up to 96, a power curveball, and the ability the throw strikes with both pitches. Unfortunately, injuries and a variety of troubling off-field issues have prevented him from ever throwing more than 90 innings in any one season. The complaints about his makeup piled up to the point where the Royals just flat-out sent him away to Texas last summer for a pair of fringe prospects, after which he acquitted himself quite well in the Arizona Fall League to finish up the year. It's more about what's between the ears than what comes out of his hand at this point, and if he can clean up the former, the Rangers could have a good third starter on their hands in return for very little.
2009 Drafted in the 33rd round out of a California high school in 2005, Gutierrez emerged from obscurity last year. He made huge strides with his traditional three-pitch arsenal throughout the season, and showcased outstanding command of both a mid-90s heater and plus curve in the Midwest League playoffs, when he allowed just two runs in 12 innings with 17 strikeouts and just two walks in helping the Bees sweep to the championship. By the end of the year, the Royals felt he was by far the best pitcher they had at any minor league level.
