2014-07-31 19:30:00 (link to chat)Can Allen Craig pitch tho?
(MRubio52 from Chicago)
He'd be the Cubs' best pitching prospect. (Ben Carsley)
2014-07-31 19:30:00 (link to chat)Sad day for me. I miss Allen Craig :(
(mdthomp from pooptown)
I promise we will treat him well. So long as he produces like an All-Star, is humble, says he wants to stay in Boston and will take less money to do so. That's really all Boston fans want. (Ben Carsley)
2014-07-31 19:30:00 (link to chat)More valuable in a trade package: Allen Craig or Craig Goldstein?
(Holly from Dallas)
I prefer the Goldstein package. (Ben Carsley)
2014-05-15 20:00:00 (link to chat)Bret- rounding the quarter pole here who are some of your buy low targets or guys who have started pretty slow that you fully expect to rebound? Thanks
(DanDaMan from Sea Cliff)
I have a trio of first basemen that I'm targeting, who have had various levels of struggles this year. Eric Hosmer has been hitting for average, but I still believe the power is coming--maybe his owner is losing faith. Prince Fielder has been in a funk, but I don't think he's done. And Allen Craig is too good of a hitter to continue like this, as long as he's healthy. (Bret Sayre)
2014-04-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm looking for a RF for a dynasty league. I have Pence, but I'm looking to get younger. I can probably get Gregory Polanco, but Taveras would be a much bigger get. Is Taveras likely to play RF, or some other OF position? What's the likely playing time scenario for both he & Polanco?
(Jonah from Redwood)
It wouldn't surprise me if Taveras plays some center field when he arrives. Unless the Cardinals find a new position for Allen Craig (or he or Adams is hurt) I'm not sure how else they'll get them all into the lineup. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-03-19 20:00:00 (link to chat)What is Stephen Piscotty's fantasy ceiling?
(MRubio52 from Chicago)
Essentially, Allen Craig but with less power. How the Cardinals keep finding/developing these guys is just incredible. I blame Mort. (Bret Sayre)
2014-03-14 09:00:00 (link to chat)Are there any NL-only 4th OF'ers or equivalent that you really like? I'm thinking of someone along the lines of Allen Craig a few yearsa ago that flashed some promise but was in line to back up at the start of the season.
(mj1453 from chicago)
I like Drew Stubbs for the Colorado factor and because Corey Dickerson is no sure thing, Jon Jay as a sneaky value proposition behind the oft-injured Peter Bourjos, and Nate McLouth as a sneaky source of speed even as a backup. (Mike Gianella)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Ben, Loving the podcast. I took over a 12-team 2 catcher auction roto league. It is 5x5 standard scoring, only i has K/9 instead of K. 260 auction budget. I can keep up to 10 guys. Would love to get your expertise opinion Here are the 12 I am deciding between. All except Jones and Craig can be kept for an additional year at a price increase Gattis ($1) Rendon ($5) Tulo ($33) Adam Jones ($32) Allen Craig ($11) Frieri ($4) Carlos Martinez ($1) Matt Moore ($15) Tyson Ross ($7) Yordano V. ($1) Cingrani ($5) Alex Wood ($5) I really want to keep CMart cause of his immense talent and price. But have a feeling you will have as one of the drops thanks!
(rzt101 from Queens)
These are hard to answer on the fly, a they require a ton of thought, but off the top of my head I'll drop Ross and Wood. (Ben Carsley)
2014-02-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)At first base, Allen Craig or Victor Martinez? It is perhaps a closer call than I expected. (Linear-weights-like points, 18 teams, modified keeper league; both players have essentially the same keeper cost. Moss is next in line.)
(justarobert from Santa Clara)
I would lean Allen Craig here, especially at first base. (Mauricio Rubio)
2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat)What are the chances that Matt Adams gets the 1b job full time in STL with Craig moving to the OF?
(Chad from OKC)
Hi Chad:

At the moment, this seems likely. I have Adams penciled in for 1B with Allen Craig moving to the outfield. It's not a perfect scenario defensively, but I can't see St. Louis moving either player to the bench. (Mike Gianella)
2013-12-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)If Oscar Taveras matures into the Cardinal's everyday RF, I would have think it would push Allen Craig to 1B. Therefore Matt Adams playing days may be numbered. Do you see this playing out any other way?
(Travs Hound from Arkansas)
No. I think Adams gets moved at some point. He seems to fit best in the AL, where that body could slide to DH for as long as the bat plays. Of course we're probably a year away from all this going down. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-11-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)The Cardinals success in developing high-caliber players without incurring high costs has become a sort of received wisdom for baseball fans. Do you have any thoughts on what that formula really entails, or what other teams are closest to replicating it?
(gerrybraun from san diego)
I tried to pry information out of them--to no avail. Partly it's a matter of correlating college stats with field observation (as with Allen Craig), but it's also a matter of great minor-league teaching and training. There are a lot of good stories on the web about "The Cardinal Way" that stress what happens to St. Louis prospects AFTER they're drafted. (Kevin Kerrane)
2013-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)How big of a disadvantage will the Red Sox be when playing in St.Louis. At least having Napoli or Ortiz on the bench helps in late innings (right?)
(MrNegative1 from Tampa)
They are disadvantaged, no doubt. Although, as you mentioned, they'll have a good pinch-hitter available off the bench either way. The weird thing is the Cardinals will be hurt by not having a DH, too, since they'll need to sit Matt Adams or Allen Craig. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-10-07 18:00:00 (link to chat)Brandon Belt's second half seemed very promising. Do you think he can finally climb over the hump and become a solid fantasy first basemen? What kind of stat line can do you predict next year? Thanks for the chat!
(Jim from The couch)
I've always liked Belt. He was a $22 hitter in NL-only, earning $3 less than Adrian Gonzalez and Allen Craig. He's already solid, the question for me is how much further can he climb. At one time, I thought Belt would develop into a 30 HR hitter, but his minor league track record combined with his Major League performance make this seem unlikely. Still, a 20-25 HR hitter in his prime with some speed and solid batting averages can't be overlooked. (Mike Gianella)
2013-09-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)One more NL Central question. With Matt Adams coming into his own, and Oscar Taveras still lurking in the minors, does St. Louis try to re-up Carlos Beltran? Or do they risk letting the oft-injured Allen Craig move to right as a regular? I know, what a tough problem to have ...
(Bill from New Mexico)
Terrible, right? I would guess Beltran. I don't really like the idea of putting Craig out there, though I guess it's an opportunity to get Craig and Adams in the lineup at the same time if both stay healthy. I still lean Beltran and I think at this age and with his history and decline in offensive production, a one-year deal at maybe a Berkman-like number might do it.

The big question is what cap Beltran wears in the Hall of Fame if he goes. (Zachary Levine)
2013-06-27 13:15:00 (link to chat)So the Cardinals have an awesome problem. What are they going to do in 2014 with Oscar Taveras, Kolten Wong, and Matt Adams when Jon Jay, Matt Carpenter, and Allen Craig already in their respective positions?
(Brady Childs from Boulder)
I wish we all had the Cardinals' problems. Carlos Beltran will be a free agent, and Craig can play a lot of positions, so finding time for Taveras, Adams, and Craig seems doable. Carpenter's emergence makes Wong a valuable trade chip. (Ben Lindbergh)
2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Think a Andrus for Allen Craig deal is crazy talk for TX & STL? How about for Taveras?
(Tony from Work)
They'd have to give Profar for Taveras and while it's a completely fair deal, I don't think we'll ever see it. It's just so hard to give up your future stud that you nurtured all the way up. I think Andrus is worth more in real baseball than just Craig. Overall, these two teams do seem like they are a fit for a trade to plug each other's holes. (Paul Sporer)
2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)This is great, I had dinner and you're still chatting. What should a package of Corbin/Cashner bring back in a keeper league?
(Keown from Amsterdam)
Maybe Anibal Sanchez or my boy Allen Craig on the offensive end. (Paul Sporer)
2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Paul, What is your perfect adult beverage? Perfect adult female? And perfect adult baseball player?
(Tony from Home)
Probably some wine, I don't drink much anymore & I wouldn't know a good beer if it bit me in the face; Scarlett Johannson still holding my top spot though it's contentious; and Justin Verlander with Allen Craig being my favorite non-Tiger (Paul Sporer)
2013-05-22 18:00:00 (link to chat)Who has a better rest of the season; Carlos Gomez or Allen Craig?
(Brad from Everywhere)
Gomez, because his surrounding cast is about to get better. Once Weeks realizes the 2013 season has begun and Hart gets in the lineup, Milwaukee's lineup has the potential to be incredibly productive. (Jason Collette)
2013-05-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Kubel or Allen Craig? I think I know the answer.
(CraigDesign from Atlanta)
If I could ban people... (Paul Sporer)
2013-04-12 14:00:00 (link to chat)McCutchen, Ryan Howard, Jose Fernandez for Giancarlo and Allen Craig. 12 team mixed roto
(joel from Texas)
Unless this is a keeper league, then I would give an emphatic "no." I dig Fernandez, but his innings-count will be limited this season, and he is likely to go through some growing pains. I am still waiting for the intimidating Ryan Howard to show up, as right now he is scarier in the Subway commercials than at the plate. Giancarlo and Craig are heavy bats that can carry an offense - gimme the two over the three. (Doug Thorburn)
2013-04-12 14:00:00 (link to chat)12 team keeper h2h, with 12 man minor league rosters. Allen Craig for Zunnino and Jose Fernandez?
(Old professor from New york)
I tend to think that young players are overrated in keeper leagues, and I'm saying that as someone who has overrated them in my keepers for years. There is so much that can happen between AAA and the majors, and though Fernandez already looks like a keeper, we are comparing 5 innings against the body of work for Craig. I find that prospects often cost roughly 80-90% of what we think they are capable of, yet in reality very few of them will reach their ceiling, and it could take years for that to happen (at which point they could be on someone else's roster). So I prefer the bird in the hand to the two in the Bush Leagues.

On the jukebox: Judas Priest, "Green Manalishi" (Doug Thorburn)
2013-03-20 11:00:00 (link to chat)If you had Kimbrel in a dynasty league, name a hitter who you trade him for. Thanks
(rkessl from chicago)
A top-50 bat that could help me win this year, since I want to win NOW in every league I'm in, regardless of format. Kimbrel will help do that more than any other closer, so give me a bat who will also be a difference maker. Let's say, Paul Goldschmidt? Allen Craig? Yoenis Cespedes? Just spitballing some names there.. (Cory Schwartz)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)12 team keeper league h2h points..Allen Craig or AGon?
(The old professor from Jupiter fla)
Old Professor, you must be new to the Paul Sporer Experience. :) Joking aside, it's Craig for me. Love that dude. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)I have an intense dislike for Miguel Cabrera that burns as bright as your (and my) love for Allen Craig. That said, should I avoid Miggy in my auction, or go after if and trade him after the draft?
(Jonah from Phoenix, AZ)
I never let my personal disdain cloud my fantasy judgment. I'd even roster Jonathan Papelbon. Why not just go for Braun, Stanton, Trout, Kemp types instead of having to worry about finagling a trade? (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Paul, just wanted to let you know that I'm no longer seeing Justin. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/eye-on-baseball/21703459/urgent-kate-upton-says-shes-not-dating-justin-verlander
(Kate Upton from Michigan)
LOL at the SEO action at the end of that blurb. Alas, I knew that and I'm currently seeing Kate wants to come to one of my auctions and rub my shoulders as I get bid up by some jerk on Allen Craig and end up paying $38 for him. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm in a 5x5 12 team keeper league (keep 7). Keepers are Holliday, cliff lee, Chris sale, Aramis Ramirez, Billy Butler, Jose Bautista and Allen Craig. Been offered a trade: Craig for Matt Cain. Should I accept and why?
(Fletch from Tierra Del Fuego)
With the caveat that fantasy is absolutely not my thing, I would do that deal for sure. You should be able to replace Craig's offense at 1B fairly easily, and Cain is an elite starter who will almost certainly give you 220 innings a year for the next couple of seasons. So yeah, pull the trigger! (Ian Miller)
2013-02-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)You recommended trading Allen Craig???????? Blocked, reported for spam, told Anonymous hacker syndicate that you punched a woman so they'll chase you down, window x'd, punched self in throat just for having read it.
(Paul Sporer from Austin)
Too many first names, pass (Ian Miller)
2012-12-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)How far will your love of Allen Craig go?
(Jason A from Detroit)
I've already taken him in the top 35 of three leagues. Renaming my beagle The Wrench is the obvious next step. (Paul Sporer)
2012-11-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you buy the Cardinals line that they are going to do nothing at SS and bank on Furcal's health and Kozma as the backup? Seems like a potential repeat of the Berkman issue last year, except Kozma (or Jackson for that matter) aren't Allen Craig.
(Jon V. from Derby,KS)
I sort of buy it in that the market isn't exactly flush with shortstops. Would it be that easy to get an upgrade over Furcal? (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-07-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)So what are the odds that Allen Craig gets named to the All Star team (injured Votto) and benched by his own team (for Berkman) in the same week? Or can we hold out hope that Berkman becomes MLB's best pinch hitter?
(Hokieball from DC)
Haha, I don't think I'd hold my breath on that plan of action for Berkman. I'm sure they'll try to work Craig in at first and outfield whenever possible, but I'll be very interested to see if they try him at second. There was talk of it last year and it never really happened, but with the way he's hitting, I wouldn't be surprised if it gets some legs. The team could also bench Jon Jay more often, but since I own him pretty much everywhere, I'm not going to mention it... (Derek Carty)
2012-05-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Name a handful of current bench players you see carving out a role and producing fantasy worthy numbers?
(Ridin'thepine from Splintersville)
Obviously things would have to break right for each of these guys, but here goes: Jeff Keppinger, Kosuke Fukudome, Brent Lillibridge, Tyler Flowers, Johnny Giavotella, Dave Ross, Juan Francisco, Tyler Moore, Adrian Cardenas, Chris Snyder, Allen Craig, Wilin Rosario, Nate Schierholtz (Derek Carty)
2012-05-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Allen Craig eventually force himself into the 2B equation? The guy needs to be in the lineup every day.
(tommybones from new york)
If necessary, but Jay's injury opens an outfield spot. I think he'll get his ABs, but the Wrench (his amazing nickname... hat tip to Cory Schwartz who I first heard it from) will play. (Paul Sporer)
2012-03-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Jason, how much playing time do you see John Mayberry & Allen Craig getting? Sleepers? Thanks, Dan
(DandaMan from SeaCliff)
Mayberry should be a cinch to get 500 PA while Craig is a 50/50. I don't know if Mayberry can be considered a sleeper any longer as he should be a 20+ HR guy & 10 SB guy that will struggle to hit above .270 (Jason Collette)
2012-03-14 13:30:00 (link to chat)Hey Ben, how do much playing time do you see the following guys getting: Zach Cozart, John Mayberry, Dayan Viciedo and Allen Craig? I see them all as potential fantasy sleepers. Thanks.
(DanDaMan from SeaCliff)
Can't say I strongly disagree with our Depth Charts on any of those guys. I think Cozart has the clearest route to playing time, and I'm cautiously optimistic. (Ben Lindbergh)
2011-10-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)Word out of St. Louis is that TLR made his decision around the beginning of August -- AFTER the Rasmus trade. Do you think they'd have been as willing to go all-in by moving a potential star who didn't get along with the manager if they'd know TLR wasn't coming back?
(Bill from New Mexico)
That's a great question and not one I can easily answer from my vantage point here, but the trade is still solid even if they know TLR is out the door. They had outfield depth in Allen Craig and Jon "Chief Justice" Jay and a fatal shortage of breathing pitchers. And there is every possibility that Rasmus was so disgruntled that he was never going to be gruntled again, regardless of who the manager is, or that they had reached the point where they didn't want to deal with him anymore regardless. I've said this before, but never underestimate the possibility that "I'm sick of you" was the motivation for a trade that is otherwise tough to figure out. (Steven Goldman)
2011-06-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)So, do the Cards go and find a 4-6 week replacement for Pujols (Juan Miranda? Casey Kotchman?) or is it Berkman (when healthy) and prayer?
(dianagramr from NYC)
Given the length of time Pujols will be out, I don't see the Cardinals as making a move. I strongly suspect we'll see Berkman playing first base with Allen Craig and John Jay soaking up the bulk of the right field at-bats. (Jay Jaffe)
2011-06-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Where would you rank Allen Craig amongst NL 2B once he gets eligibility?
(KD from Loop)
Depends how much they play Schumaker. If the PT gets split relatively evenly, he's probably somewhere in the middle, ahead of guys like Daniel Murphy and Jonathan Herrera, maybe in line with a guy like Darwin Barney. It really depends on the PT, though. (Derek Carty)
2010-02-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Free Allen Craig?
(Dan from St. Louis)
I'm hardly blowing him up, and he's not in my Top 100, but I do find him WAY underrated. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-03-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you agree with Tony La Russa's decision to give the third base job to converted outfielder Joe Mather over David Friese or Allen Craig? Friese was in a car accident and couldn't play for a week, but it doesn't seem like TLR ever gave him a chance.
(jbuofm from Peoria)
It's a 4-6 week stopgap play. One issue is that if you give it to a decent prospect and they play well, you're stuck when Glaus returns. By giving it to Mather, you avoid that issue; he's no more than a utility guy, anyway. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-08-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Stephen Marek have a chance to be in the closer mix for the Braves over the next few years? He's been touted by at least one well-known baseball analyst as a Top 60 talent (?!), but his numbers (especially since joining the Braves) don't exactly scream "future closer". Also, is Allen Craig of the Cards a solid future big leaguer at third base, or more of a utility type?
(stickman from baltimore)
I've no idea who you are talking about, but Marek isn't THAT good. That said, I think he'll be a solid big league reliever -- just not a closing one. (Kevin Goldstein)
