2016 Almonte is no team's first choice as an every-day center fielder, but in Cleveland all he had to do to win over the fanbase was not be Michael Bourn, a task at which billions of unexceptional people succeed daily. Once installed as a regular after the trade deadline, Almonte actually thrived, with solid range in center and a power spike that boosted his slugging percentage 76 points from 2014. Nominally a switch-hitter, Almonte scalded right-handed pitching—all but one of his 22 extra-base hits came against righties—and flailed to a microscopic .017 ISO against lefties. PECOTA expects his bat to regress to something between his San Diego and Cleveland iterations, so he profiles as a good secondary option, not a consistent starter, still not Michael Bourn, and still never gonna be Bradley Zimmer.
2015 Almonte, a Warren Newson-shaped center fielder, began 2014 as Seattle's leadoff man, banging out two hits in Anaheim on Opening Day. After failing to make contact for a month, he spent the next three down the road at Tacoma, where his numbers improved to mediocre. Almonte continued down I-5 to San Diego in a deadline deal and wasn't terrible. A plus runner with gap power, he expands the strike zone too often. In the field, his speed is useful but doesn't always let him overcome curious routes and concentration lapses. Like Chris Denorfia, for whom he was traded, Almonte profiles as a role player.
2014 Almonte was all but off the prospect radar for the past five years. He struggled with an alcohol addiction that only intensified after he required labrum surgery on his shoulder in 2010, but once he broke through the addiction in 2011 he began to play the best baseball of his career. Seattle grabbed him in a trade of Shawn Kelley, and in 2013 he made his way from Double-A all the way to the majors. He showed excellent speed and a well-rounded batting profile at three levels. A brief 25-game debut as a major-league center fielder last season went well enough, and he'll go into spring training with an outside shot at a starting job.
2010 Abraham Almonte has a center fielder's tool kit and made some strides in repeating the Sally League, but will need to further refine his strike-zone judgment if he's going to make it.

2016-01-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Having a hard time buying the Indians OF next year. They have always been higher on Tyler Nanquin than the rest of the world. Where would you place him amount Abraham Almonte, Rajai Davis, Lonnie Chisenhall, Collin Cowgill, Joey Butler, and Shane Robinson next season?
(Truganini from CO)
Well, that's not exactly man inspiring group, is it? I'd probably plays him right below Chisenhall, though I should probably start treating Chisenhall with so much adoration. Davis is...well he's Rajaj Davis. The rest of those guys aren't very good. (Christopher Crawford)
