YearComment
2016 It's appropriate that when the Royals needed to manufacture a run to clinch their first title in a generation, the primary raw material was Dyson, who pinch-ran, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored the go-ahead run. That's what Dyson and Kansas City do. Ned Yost has often been chided for his decision-making (see: leadoff hitter Alcides Escobar), but how many speedy, punchless fourth-outfielder types litter major-league rosters without providing the impact Yost gets from Dyson? The Royals have wisely minimized his exposure at the plate and maximized his impact on the basepaths and in the field, which sure sounds like smart management to us. Kansas City fans had best hope Dyson doesn't have to spend the season as a platoon corner outfielder, since every game he starts is a game he's not able to enter in a key situation after a better hitter works his way on base.
2015 There's a lot more to baseball than hitting and pitching, as Dyson showed last year with his leather and spikes. Faster than a Robin Williams character-shift, he ranked among the league leaders in producing runs with his legs (despite starting only 66 games) by stealing bases at a high success rate, taking every extra base that wasn't tied down and generally driving opposing defenses and pitchers to distraction. With virtually no power and limited on-base skills, he never has and never will hit enough to start, but Mr. Zoombiya is a true weapon off the bench.
2014 With a static TAv, Dyson drew fewer walks but hit for more power in 2013. We didn’t think that was possible. The man who coined the phrase “That’s what speed do,” doesn’t “do” much other than run. In the 92 times he was on first or second with the next base open, he attempted to swipe that base 40 times. Defensively, he continues to struggle getting quick reads and will take some questionable routes from time to time. He’s not anywhere in the same class as fellow center fielder Lorenzo Cain, but the plus speed has the Royals thinking this is the case. A one-dimensional player who happens to own the one dimension Dayton Moore most covets, he’s a useful set of legs off the bench.
2013 A 50th-round selection in 2006, Dyson figured to get passed on the outfield depth chart by Cain. Opportunity knocked when Cain couldn't stay healthy. With limited power, Dyson could gain value if he draws more walks, because once he reaches base, he's insanely dangerous. He has attempted to swipe a base in 31 percent of his opportunities. More impressive, he's touched home exactly half the times he's been on base in his career. Defensively, Dyson struggles reading the ball off the bat, getting late jumps and taking some interesting routes to the ball. At least he has the speed to recover.
2012 The second coming of Herb Washington, Dyson appeared in 26 games for the Royals, and in 12 of those he entered as a pinch runner. That’s really the only way the Royals could get him on base as he’s an out machine at the plate. You would think that would limit his ceiling, but the Royals are really keen on burners who can swipe a base and cover a lot of ground in the spacious Kauffman Stadium outfield. Dyson is the only player drafted in the 50th round of the 2006 draft to appear in the majors.
2011 Dyson came up in September and ran all over the place, stealing nine bases in 18 games and needing just three weeks to take the team lead in highlight-reel catches. Despite all of that excitement, the Royals signed free-agent Melky Cabrera to be the 2011 center fielder. Given both Dyson's and Cabrera's lack of positives, this is a Hobson's choice for the Royals: even if Cabrera plays down to expectations and Dyson eventually claims the job, it's not going to take the Royals long to learn that as exhilarating as speed is, a productive player needs to do other things over the long haul, like hit for some power and not make so many outs. Those are skills that Dyson didn't display in the minors, and there is no reason to think that he's going to start displaying them now just because he's so darn fun to watch.
2010 Jarrod Dyson is an athletic outfielder whose performances suggest he'll be one of the most athletic guys—on the bench.

DateQuestionAnswer
2015-02-26 20:00:00 (link to chat)Will Billy Burns ever be an useful fantasy OF thanks to the steals? Maybe a OF4 with impact steals... Is Jarrod Dyson his floor or ceiling, and can he steal 50+ bases? Thank you!!
(Daniel from Texas)
The problem is that Burns can't hit. He's more Tony Campana than Jarrod Dyson. (Bret Sayre)
2014-10-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)Is Jarrod Dyson as funny as he seems?
(Omarion from Hardly, On., Canada)
In my experience, no ball player is ever as funny as he seems. Except maybe Brandon McCarthy. He seems legitimately funny. (Andy McCullough)
2011-04-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Jarrod Dyson a player who could develop given a normal amount of time in AAA? Or is he a guy that will likely never hit enough to be a regular, who KC might as well use for whatever advantage they can get now?
(BL from Bozeman, MT)
Never more than a speedy bench guy. (Kevin Goldstein)
