BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2017 Due to publishing agreements, the 2017 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2017 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2016 After years of trying to establish himself as a full-time starter for the Tribe, Cleveland bumped McAllister from the rotation after just one start in 2015. Fortunately, the conversion to relief worked out for both parties, as a starter-to-reliever velocity bump transformed him from a no. 5 starter to solid setup option. Not only did he add almost three ticks to both his fastball and curve, he scrapped his dismal slider for a cutter that zoomed in on hitters nearly 11 percent faster than his old offering. The velocity gains bought him more whiffs and many more strikeouts (up to 28 percent from 20 percent). Now entrenched in the ‘pen, McAllister might not be Wade Davis, but he is another guy who could provide far more value in 70 innings per season than he ever did in 140.
2015 The Indians used McAllister to start games as well as finish them, but his fastball-heavy repertoire and questionable secondaries should hasten a full-time transition to the bullpen. He brings mid-90s heat with arm-side run and dials it up nearly 75 percent of the time. The breaking stuff is light on movement despite large velocity differentials; it includes two distinct pitches that both follow single-plane flight paths with vertical depth but a lack of lateral movement. The peripherals suggest that McAllister was an innocent victim of the vagaries of balls in play, but the narrative is distorted by an approach that was relatively easy for opposing batters to decipher, resulting in a 28 percent line-drive rate on his fastball that ranked in the top (the bad kind of top) decile of pitchers.
2014 With all the miracles happening around him on the Tribe staff, McAllister's steady emergence as a solid major-league starter can go almost unnoticed. He doesn't throw hard, he doesn't follow the organization's blueprint for groundballing, doesn't keep the ball in the park, he doesn't even have pinpoint control. But he does have a nice four-seam fastball with some backup movement that is good enough for his show-me slider and changeup to stay in the background. While that should be enough to earn a spot in almost any rotation, he'll have to avoid injuries—such as the finger sprain of 2013—to improve his odds of staying in the Cleveland five. Or he could experience a pitching epiphany that adds his name to the Miracle List.
2013 At this time last year, McAllister was a mere afterthought in Cleveland's fifth-starter discussion. Following a strong 2012 campaign, he now appears to be a legitimate fourth starter. He trailed off toward the end of the year—3.7 K/BB from May to July; 2.9 K/BB from August on—but he showed more than enough to be a capable rotation cog. His fastball was up to 93 mph in 2012. He combines it with a plus changeup that gets 10 miles per hour of separation, a good slider, and a cutter to generate his fair share of strikeouts. Combined with above-average command, McAllister has a solid back-end profile.
2012 An underdog for the fifth starter job before the Derek Lowe deal, McAllister will surely begin the year in the minors now. He had a very good year at Triple-A in 2011, working on and improving his command, a key for a guy who gets by on control and guile. McAllister features several pitches, but none profile as true plus offerings yet. He throws a 90-mph fastball that can get some sink, a change-up, cutter, slider, and curve. If he's to be successful, it will be as a poor man's Josh Tomlin, commanding and mixing his pitches to keep hitters off balance. Unlike Tomlin, however, McAllister also profiles to get some ground balls if he can work down in the zone.
2011 A former Yankee who came over in the Austin Kearns deal, scouts always wondered where and when Zach McAllister's lack of stuff would catch up to him. The answers are "Triple-A" and "2010," respectively.
2010 Despite some late-season arm fatigue, McAllister boosted his standing as a solid prospect by leading the Eastern League in ERA. He doesn't have anything to brag about in the fastball department, sitting around 90 mph, but has a plus slider. His other off-speed pitches are just token offerings, which means that unless McAllister can maintain his strong command he's going to be heading to the bullpen as a two-pitch middle reliever. For now, he'll head to Triple-A Scranton with the portfolio of a back-end starter and will await an opening, perhaps imposition of The Joba Rules 3.0, which command that Chamberlain is to be sealed in aspic and not allowed to pitch at all.
2009 A 2006 third-rounder, Zach McAllister hopes to ride good control and a low-90s fastball to the majors.

2015-04-06 20:15:00 (link to chat)Any thoughts on Zach McAllister this season?
(Steve McEwen from Winnipeg)
The same kind of thoughts generated by doing taxes, or listening to a story about a friend of a friend, I suppose. (Craig Goldstein)
2015-04-07 14:00:00 (link to chat)Shane Greene, Jesse Hahn, TJ House, Rubby DeLaRosa, Anthony DeScalafani, Jimmy Nelson, Zach McAllister, Trevor Bauer. If one of these is a top 20 pitcher this year, who is it?
(Matt from NJ)
Gimme Bauer in that scenario. It assumes a huge leap in development, but he has the tools to make that dream a possibility. I also like the upsides of Rubby, Hahn, and Desclafani. (Doug Thorburn)
2013-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you like tonight in Seattle, Erasmo Ramirez or Zach McAllister? How about beyond tonight?
(captnamerca from dunedin)
I'll lean Ramirez going forward. No guess for tonight. (Harry Pavlidis)
2013-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)CLE SP McAllister has NOT walked a batter this year (2 starts). Is his control good enough go sustain a quality stat line?
(Biscuits from SJSU)
Looking at Zach McAllister's career numbers, I'm concerned about his high hit rates even going back to the minor leagues. He seems like a decent back-end option but probably not more than that. (Geoff Young)
