2013 Acquired from the Braves in the Nate McLouth trade, Locke is still trying to break into the majors consistently. Heís got one more option left, and the Pirates will probably send him to the minors to start the season. He throws a low-90s sinker, curveball, and changeup, and he projects to become a fourth or fifth starter. Itís worth noting that Locke won his first career game against his old team by allowing one run over six innings despite walking five. Sometimes it pays to be lucky.
2012 Locke is a gangly southpaw equipped with a plus low-90s sinker, a bender that sits in the mid-70s, and a developing changeup. Add in strong command and Locke is without a glaring weakness. At the same time, he lacks enough strengths to project him beyond a number-four or -five starter. Locke spent most of the season in Altoona with cameos in Indianapolis and Pittsburgh. The smart money is on a return to Indianapolis to open the season with a trip to Pittsburgh sometime during the summer.
2011 Acquired from the Braves in the Nate McLouth deal, Locke spent the early part of his career looking like he should be good, but never quite delivering the results. That changed in 2010, and the key was throwing more strikes. He doesn't have the stuff to blow hitters away, but at the same time, he doesn't have a weakness in his arsenal either, as his low-90s fastball, curve and change all rate as average to a tick-above. The aim is to have him ready to contribute from the back of a big league rotation at some point in 2012.
2010 A second-round pick in 2006, Locke was the third element of the McLouth package received from the Braves. He has the immediate virtue of being left-handed while throwing a low-90s fastball and a good curve. He also has problems with consistency in his delivery and with his mechanics, but his command improved after the trade, and he's one of the Bucs' better prospects by default as much as pedigree.
2009 The teamís second-round pick in 2006, Locke was undermined by some dreadful team defense and poor run support with the Bravesí Sally League team in Rome last year, but posted strong peripherals and remains one of the teamís top pitching prospects. A lefty who throws in the low 90s with a strong curve and a developing changeup, he should impress at pitching-friendly Myrtle Beach this year and follow Cole Rohrbough into the 2012 rotation.
2008 The Braves' second-round pick in 2006, Jeffrey Locke has a career 8.62 (112:13) K/BB ratio in two low-level seasons.
2007 Jeff Locke, another lefty with low-90s heat, was picked in the second round of the 2006 draft, the rare high school pitcher taken by the Braves from outside the state of Georgia.

2014-06-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Also, looking at the Pirates current rotation, how badly does Taillon getting hurt suck for them? If he was up and pitching well, the Pirates are a playoff team.
(Dave from Boston)
It's not quite that simple, but yes, it does hurt. There's no doubt that they'd rather have Taillon pitching than Jeff Locke, Brandon Cumpton or Vance Worley. That said, it's been their lack of offense (before Polanco arrived) and their previously sharp bullpen that have hurt them this year. You can't make definitive statements like that about a prospect and a team making the playoffs. They're just not factual. (Jeff Moore)
2014-04-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)With injuries to other Pirates pitching prospects, does Kingham get elevated any quicker?
(Silverback38 from VA)
The Pirates are notoriously conservative with their promotions and do not rush their prospects. The Pirates also have some pitching depth ahead of their top prospects, like Jeff Locke and Brandon Crumpton, so there's no need to rush anyone. If they dip into the prospect pool for starts, Kingham could nab a few of those that would have gone to Jameson Taillon, but i don't think we'll see Kingham this year unless things really get bad on the Burgh. (Jeff Moore)
2013-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is Jeff Locke's ceiling? #3 starter, or #5 starter?
(redguy12588 from Pittsburgh)
5th starter, what he's doing now seems to be a mirage. (Harry Pavlidis)
2013-06-27 13:15:00 (link to chat)Who is Jeff Locke? And how is he 2nd in the NL in ERA?
(Scott from PA)
He's a starter for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the guy with a bigger gap between his FIP and ERA than any other pitcher. Granted, the Pirates have a good defense, but that .225 BABIP and .115/.192/.148(!!) line with runners in scoring position aren't going to last. He gets grounders, so he's not a bad guy to have toward the back of a rotation, but you probably don't need me to tell you that he's not this good. (Ben Lindbergh)
2013-06-27 13:15:00 (link to chat)Do the Pirates actually stick around til the end this year, or do they fade in the second half?
(Matt from Springfield)
Pirates in first place, and tied for the best record in baseball! What a world. I don't foresee another soul-crushing second-half fade. I think they've played a bit over their heads (we already touched on Jeff Locke), but they'll certainly stay in the race. Probably wouldn't pick them over the Cardinals or Reds. (Ben Lindbergh)
2013-05-29 18:30:00 (link to chat)When does Jeff Locke turn into a pumpkin?
(ironcityguys from Pittsburgh)
I don't know when it will happen, but I agree with your sentiment that it will eventually happen. There's nothing in the numbers to indicate that this level of performance will continue. PNC is murder on righties, so Locke will continue to benefit on the days he pitches there, but a 4.00 ERA seems like a far more likely outcome than the sub-3 he's posting now. (Mike Gianella)
2013-04-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Would you stream Tehren today vs the Pirates? He looked better at the end of his last start, but the Pirates have been scoring runs lately.
(Johnny from Boston)
It's a worthwhile stream, for me, if you badly need a win, since Jeff Locke hasn't set the world on fire in his first two starts. That said, I'd be prepared for some possible rate-stat damage, and if you need help there, I'd look for a different option. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-04-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can Jeff Locke be a solid back of the rotation starter?
(redguy12588 from Pittsburgh)
solid back of the rotation ... that's close to be an oxymoron. He's got the crafty lefty make-up with a good change-up. He may need to add another pitch. But yes, I think he's got a good shot at sticking in the back of a decent big league rotation. Maybe not this year, though. (Harry Pavlidis)
2013-03-20 11:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks Cory. Do you like Jeff Locke's chances of staying in the Pirates' rotation for much of the year? How high is his ceiling?
(Keith from Manchester, CT)
34-11 K-BB in 34.1 IP in his debut last year, 8.3 K/9 and 3.4 K/BB in the minors, decent ground ball rates... the numbers are impressive, although his minor league ERA's never measured up to his underlying skills. He's not a great "stuff" guy and the Pirates have other options if he falters but he's got a shot to stick around as an end-of-rotation guy, a #4 type. (Cory Schwartz)
2011-09-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do the Pirates have any prospects that could help in 2012?
(John from Pittsburgh)
Don't be surprised if Jeff Locke finds his way to the big leagues next year. (Kevin Goldstein)
