BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2010 Shelby Ford was considered a top Pirates prospect going into last season, made a favorable impression in his first bit-league spring training, and then had a gawdawful year that put his future in limbo.
2009 Ford is unusually tall for a second baseman, but he's nevertheless one of the better prospects in a weak system—he's a dangerous hitter when healthy, hitting for gap power and chipping in with a few stolen bases. Ford will start this season at Triple-A, but he's in line to succeed Freddy Sanchez in 2010 if he can avoid the injury bug, as he missed time with back and hip problems the last two seasons. That's sort of the question, though; big men at the keystone make big targets, and while Ford has good range, he can be a bit clunky around the bag on the deuce.
2008 Ford draws high marks for his feel for the game, which is fitting for someone who grew up as the son of a high school coach. The Pirates' third-round pick from Oklahoma State in 2006 hits for average, has slightly above-average pop for a middle infielder, and is solid defensively. Ford, who will start this season at Double-A, is unlikely to be a star, but could be a decent major-league regular.
