2013 Out of minor-league options and with the burden of occasionally having to play second base removed, Young saw his offensive game blossom in 2012. He has been an efficient base stealer throughout his professional career and gets on base just often enough to make that matter. Young was enjoying a strong second half last year when a left rib cage muscle strain ended his season on August 20. Once healthy, the workout- and diet-conscious Young will resume his pursuit of a career as a fourth or fifth outfielder.
2012 Son of the original Colorado Rockie bearing the same name, Eric Jr. does everything his father did, only not as well. Young doesn't field well enough to play second base or hit well enough to play left field. He has decent on-base skills (at home, anyway) but zero power. His career .181/.270/.207 line away from Coors Field is problematic. Young is fast and uses his speed well, but he needs to add 40 points to his batting average to be useful in a poor-man's Luis Castillo kind of way. The name helps open the door, but as Bobby Bonds Jr. will attest, at some point you've got to do something.
2011 It’s hard to glean much from Young’s 2010 season. Called up after 15 games in April, he suffered a stress fracture of his right tibia while running the bases after just 13 major-league games, missed three months, played four rehab games in Double-A, 18 games in Triple-A, then was called back to The Show in mid-August. Installed at second base on August 22, he hit just .234/.292/.261 in 31 games—28 of them starts—before pain in the leg ended his season a few days early. Young is expected to heal fully over the winter, and did steal 20 bases in 25 attempts after returning from the disabled list, so the injury isn’t much of a concern—but his bat is. Young’s game is hitting .290 with a healthy supply of walks and a ton of stolen bases, something he did reliably in the minors over the previous five seasons, but he will be 26 in May, has yet to bring the first two of those skills to the majors, and isn't a particularly strong fielder. His minor-league track record and familiar name might have given him the inside track to a second-base job, but he now has December import Jose Lopez to contend with.
2010 Eric Young, Jr. is a slap-happy speedster who hits for average, draws walks, steals bases by the bushel, and plays subpar defense at second and in the outfield—in short, he’s a carbon copy of his father, and Clint Barmes’ reverse-doppelganger. Young wintered in the Dominican working on his positional flexibility, and is slated to break camp as a utilityman. A switch-hitter with somewhat better numbers from the left side, he makes for an interesting platoon partner at the keystone, and if he isn’t a disaster in the field could wind up taking over there sooner than you might expect.
2009 The Rockies keep moving Young up the ladder, he keeps producing, and the number of doubters in the scouting community keeps decreasing. It's almost impossible to not compare him to his father at this point: he's a little guy who slaps the ball around the field enough to hit in the upper .290s, draws his fair share of walks, and steals a bunch of bases. Young is not a great second baseman, but he's acceptable there, and the Rockies have also had him learning to play the outfield in order to give themselves a few more options with him. He was a 30th-round pick, and he's going to have a career. You don't get to say that a lot.
2007 Eric Young Jr. led organized baseball in stolen bases in 2006, which will win him a Non-Prize delivered personally by Esix Snead.
