BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2015 Steve Tolleson played the role of Maicer Izturis perfectly as an injury fill-in, playing multiple positions and hitting for negative value.
2013 Tolleson has received scarcely more than a passing glance by a big-league manager in his time in baseball, instead spending most of the past five seasons at Triple-A trying to prove that he can be a useful bench cog. He has good patience and a sound enough approach at the plate, but his hit tool is questionable. He has played everywhere but catcher and first base in his career and was primarily a shortstop last year, so his best chance at a major-league career will be as a utilityman.
2011 Tolleson has all the makings of a fine utility player, a role that allowed his father, Wayne, to last in the big leagues for a decade. He can play any infield position and has a better bat than his old man (which isn't saying much), but his potential positions seem to be occupied by Adam Rosales. The two are very similar talents, but Rosales had the edge of having already proved himself in the majors, a distinction Tolleson lacks unless one interprets his 2010 cup of coffee generously. Tolleson won't be able to outlast Rosales, who's less than six months his elder, but he'll get his break eventually.
2010 Utilityman Steven Tolleson finally stayed healthy in 2009, but his bat regressed; his best chance is to become the next Harris/Punto/Tolbert, but the Twins have already collected the set and may not have space on the pine for another.
2009 Tolleson did the best offensive work of his career at Double-A, but previous seasons may offer a better indication of his true talent level. Like his father (Wayne) before him, Steven has a future as a sometime middle infielder, though his contact skills should allow him to surpass his old man’s meager efforts at the plate. He probably won't be his old man's equal as a basestealer, but he has sufficient speed to put in a center-field cameo without embarrassing himself, an important addition given that utility infielders who can't play shortstop—and Tolleson really can't—don't get too many chances.
2007 Wayne`s kid is very similar to his father: He`s a gritty little infielder who can play all over the infield, hit a bit, and draw some walks. Daddy turned it into a ten-year career with a couple of starting jobs here and there, and Steven has a decent shot at doing the same.
