2010 The injury bug bit Lewis yet again. Hes been effective when healthy, compiling a 2.71 ERA in 84 minor-league starts. He missed significant time in 2004-05 with Tommy John surgery, and then only managed 21 starts in 2008; elbow pain in 2009 limited him again. Hell get consideration for a starting spot in 2010, but needs to convince the front office that he has the endurance to last an entire season, or at least longer than it takes to sit through the commercials and trailers before the movie starts.
2009 Tommy John surgery followed by tendonitis caused Lewis to throw just 18 2/3 innings combined in 2004-05, his first two minor league seasons, but he has been outstanding at every level since then. A preternatural ability to command his secondary offerings, primarily an excellent Uncle Charlie and plus changeup, trumps Lewis's mediocre velocity. Last year he walked just 1.4 per nine across three levels, and opened his major league career with 15 consecutive scoreless innings. He'll be in the mix for a starting job in camp.
2008 After winning the somewhat fictional minor league ERA title in 2006, Lewis pitched at the more age-appropriate Double-A level last year and people started to calm down about him. Then again, scouts were never all that high on him in the first place, as his fastball doesn't get out of the mid 80s, leaving him to get by solely on outstanding command. Imagine Jeremy Sowers, only with even less heat. You're not so excited anymore, are you?
2007 Lewis led the minor leagues with a 1.48 ERA, but he`s more of a crafty left-hander than any sort of future star. Lewis had Tommy John surgery in college, and a sore arm since signing has kept him on a limited pitch count as a pro. A strike-thrower who sits in the mid-80s with outstanding command and a plus curveball, Lewis has the perfect formula to succeed in High A-ball, but pitchers with his profile often hit a wall at the upper levels, long before they reach the majors.
