BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Last spring, we predicted Gomez might very well put up an unexpectedly valuable season despite his obvious talents having long been undermined by his indiscriminate plate approach. Chalk one up for the crystal ball, as last year Gomez used a combination of strong speed, top-notch defense, and surprising thump to earn the starting gig in center and help power the Brewers through their unexpected stretch run. Gomez remains as hacktastic as they come, offering at more pitches than any NL regular, posting walk-to-strikeout ratios near the league bottom, and constantly swinging for the fences—essentially doing everything he can to avoid taking advantage of his speed. His sudden power surge doesn’t seem like a fluke, however, as power is often the last tool to develop and last year’s home-run-per-fly-ball ratio isn’t ridiculously unsustainable. Gomez will be an acceptable starter as long as he can run down fly balls and launch a few over the fence, but if the power goes away, his value leaves with it.
2012 Gomez has a terrible approach at the plate, but he has enough athletic ability that his “grip and rip” strategy resulted in a career-high ISO in 2011. That such a phenomenal defensive center fielder couldn't hold his job with a well-above-average rate of extra base hits is stark commentary on his inability to either make regular contact or draw walks. He's still young, though three organizations have yet to make progress with coaching his swing. The good news is that his approach lends itself to a fluky good season if he gets regular playing time, so he's a dark-horse candidate to have a surprisingly high WARP out of the blue.
2011 It would be great that the speedy Gomez set a career high in on-base percentage last year, if only the OBP in question weren't .298. Combine that with a low batting average, little power, and strikeouts in almost a quarter of his plate appearances, and no amount of speed or defense will ever make starting Gomez in center field a defensible every-day plan--though the trade of Lorenzo Cain to Kansas City may force the Brewers to do just that. If he could learn to take a few more walks or make a little more contact he might become an asset, but at age 25, with over 1,400 career plate appearances, Gomez is little more likely to discover a better plate approach than he is a needle in a haystack, a cure for cancer, or the explanation for the Mary Celeste’s missing crew.
2010 On the positive side of things, Gomez is just 24 years old, and his tools are still stunning. He's a top-line runner who plays an outstanding center, but... well, that's the positives. With over 1000 plate appearances in the majors, his career on-base percentage is still under .300. The Twins had enough of waiting, so they sent him to Milwaukee for J.J. Hardy in a trade of players who had frustrated their former employers and worn out their welcomes. Gomez will be the everyday center fielder for the Brewers, and while Milwaukee won't lose a thing defensively going from Mike Cameron to Gomez, they're hoping that the guttering candle of Gomez's potential reaches full flame in their care.
2009 The centerpiece of the Santana deal with the Mets, Gomez is the reason that Denard Span had to come up from the minors and mount an unlikely rescue of the Twins' offense. Until Span was locked into the leadoff spot in late July, Gomez had been its primary occupant, batting a self-neutering .246/.281/.345 in that capacity; dropped to ninth in the order, he hit .286/.328/.400. Combine those latter rates with Gomez's speed and terrific defense and you have a center fielder worth playing, though a central role in the offense may always be a reach unless the still-young Gomez can develop a hint of power and a modicum of selectivity—his 3.4 pitches seen per plate appearance ranked 62nd among 68 qualified AL hitters.
2008 Pressed into duty when Moises Alou went down (didn't see that coming!), Gomez was more exciting than good. While Gomez is a high-ceiling prospect with a ton of talent and amazing speed, it was apparent that he wasn't ready for the big leagues. Worse, a strained hamstring and broken hand cost him the majority of the season at an age and stage that was crucial to his development. Between Alou's injuries and his own, Gomez lost a year of progress that should have been made in the minors.
2007 Gomez is a mixed bag--he has great tools and succeeded at Double-A at age 20, but it`s still not clear what that will add up to. His plate judgment is a work in progress, as he doesn`t walk much, instead spiking his OBP with 20 HBPs. He has great speed, but is more suited to right field than center, but currently lacks the power to be a suitable regular in an outfield corner. Youth is on Gomez`s side with that, as with everything. If he doesn`t develop much from where he is now, he`ll be a very useful fourth outfielder. If he keeps on growing, look out.

2008-09-30 16:30:00Twins/White Sox Play-In GameI know Carlos Gomez is still learning on the job, as the announcers said, but a .259/.297/.362 season with 142 whiffs against all of seven homers (and 38 extra-base hits overall) isn't exactly a promising sign of what's to come, though it is an improvement on his stint with the Mets in 2007.

Pretty good call by PECOTA though, as it forecasted the 22-year old for .240/.301/.361 on his weighted mean. (Marc Normandin)
