2013 Zagurski was slugged to the tune of .463 in 2012, the highest rate on the Arizona pitching staff. Unsurprisingly, the Diamondbacks let Zagurski walk after that miserable performance, and he landed with the Pirates. The left-hander sticks to a two-pitch repertoire of fastballs and breaking pitches, trusting his 91-94 mph heater to get the job done nearly three-fourths of the time. He struggles with control because an inability to balance his bowling-ball frame leads to an inconsistent release point, and as such, his penchant for missed targets has been a consistent criticism in his scouting reports. If Zagurski can get in better shape, he could become a left-handed specialist.
2012 The D-Backs acquired Mike Zagurski from the Phillies in late September and will give him a shot this season, which means Arizona's strength and conditioning coordinator has his work cut out for him.
2011 Unrecruited out of high school, Zagurski is a corn-fed Nebraskan who finally has a shot at a sustained stint in the big leagues. Hes two years removed from Tommy John surgery, and his results at Triple-A were terrific. With Romero on his way out of town, Zagurski and his fastball/slider combo have a clear path to the bullpen. If the Phils add a lefty reliever via free agency, Zagurski will battle Antonio Bastardo for the last open spot.
2010 Recovering from 2008 Tommy John surgery, Mike Zagurski stayed healthy but struggled with both command and control; he was all-or-nothing against fellow lefties, giving up a .479 SLG but striking out 30 percent of them.
2009 Although Mike Zagurski lost all of 2008 to recovery from Tommy John surgery, "Bronko" should be back in action by the summer to take his shot at a spare lefty role in the pen.
2008 The Phillies really did run the gamut of pitching last year, from Alfredo Alfonseca to Michael Zagurski. Built like a fire hydrant, Zags is the exemplar of how bad things got in the Phillies' pen last year. After climbing all the way from High-A to the majors, he did a fine job of holding down lefties (.216/.286/.216), but was blown away by righties, who turned into Rogers Hornsby against him (.340/.431/.620 in 58 PA). He then injured his right hamstring in August, prompting season-ending surgery. Zagurski doesn't throw hard and gets some groundballs, but he's going to need more, because even LOOGYs end up facing more righties than lefties in their quixotic role. Still, he could get another shot as the team's second lefty after Romero.
