2013 Scouts have never been enamored of the tools of this son of a longtime former major leaguer, who was drafted in the 14th round by the Dodgers in 2005. His power is nothing special for his position, and he doesn't run well. Even so, Van Slyke earned the Dodgers Minor League Player of the Year honors with a breakout 2011, and while he did taste the majors in 2012 when the injury bug bit, the weakness of the team's solutions at left field and first base suggested he deserved a longer look. Now blocked at all three positions by players under long-term contract, his last remaining chance with the Dodgers may hinge on a slow recovery for Crawford or a niche role as Ethier's platoon partner. Don't hold your breath.
2012 The son of former major-league mainstay Andy Van Slyke absolutely tore up the Southern League in 2011, winning the batting title while ranking second in on-base and slugging percentages, earning the organization's Minor League Player of the Year award and making Baseball America's Double-A All-Star team. Caveats about advanced age and repeating a level certainly apply, and scouts are less sold on his tools than those numbers might suggest; he doesn't run well, and his power grades out at average. Still, on a team that has suffered an increasingly expensive and unproductive Loney at first base for half a decade, he may develop into an alternative yet.
2011 After a breakout year in the hitter-friendly California League in 2009, Scott Van Slyke, son of the former Cardinals and Pirates mainstay Andy Van Slyke, couldn't maintain his gains in his first extended taste of the high minors and was returned C.O.D. to Inland Empire, the only stop where he's ever really hit.
2010 A 14th-round pick in 2005, the son of former major leaguer Andy Van Slyke bypassed a ride at Ole Miss to join the Dodgers. He made slow progress during his first four minor-league seasons, and both his approach and his physique matured to the point that he broke out in the hitter-friendly California League in 2009, finishing fifth in the league in homers, and 10th in slugging percentage. If he can maintain that power as he moves up to Double-A, the Dodgers might have something.
2009 Scott Van Slyke, son of Andy, was thought to be bound for Ole Miss when the Dodgers made him their 14th-round pick in 2005; progress has come slowly since, but some like his athleticism and the way his 6-foot-5 frame could fill out.

2012-05-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)what do you think of Scott Van Slyke? Yes he's old but he can't be any worse than Loney or Rivera can he?
(Jason from Quebec)
No, he probably can't be, even though he's 25 and it's Albuquerque. And Rivera just hurt his leg sliding into third, so it's possible that he might miss some time. I'm rooting for Van Slyke, if only because there's a chance he might be as funny as his old man. Andy Van Slyke was hilarious. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-05-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)do you think either Scott Van Slyke or Alex Castellanos can make an impact for Dodgers? Both are obviously older but both have crushed the ball for 2 or 3 years straight.
(Jesse Pinkman from ABQ)
And yes, I think Castellanos could help, too. He's raking, and Kevin wrote in April that scouts can see him as average at second. The Dodgers aren't in need of help at second quite as desperately as they are at first, but I expect you'll see both of these guys at some point this season. (Ben Lindbergh)
