2013 Cleveland gave up on Laffey as a starting pitcher in 2010, but injuries challenged the Blue Jays’ depth and put them in a position to offer him 16 big-league starts last year. His inability to miss bats makes it unlikely that he’ll be able to sustain the sliver of success he had in 2012, but he’s the kind of depth piece organizations like to have around, preferably at Triple-A.
2012 It's a given that lefties get a million chances, but Aaron Laffey's fastball sits at 87-88 mph and he lacks a specialist's dominance over same-side hitters, so what's the point?
2011 The Indians tried Laffey as both a starter and reliever again in 2010, which afforded them another opportunity to confirm that he's not especially good at either. Shoulder problems certainly didn't help his cause. At this point he's received more chances than he's deserved, as radar-gun readings above 90 are a rarity for him—he tries to survive on a plus slider and changing speeds. Without LOOGY-esque splits, he doesn't have a future in a situational role, either, and he'll be fighting for a job in the spring.
2010 How often is your bullpen so bad that you need to move your second most effective starter there to shore it up? That’s what happened with the Indians when they made Laffey a temporary reliever to provide some stability after he went 2-0 with 4.09 ERA in his first four starts. As the old saying goes, this was robbing Peter to pay Paul, or more appropriately, stealing from Bert Blyleven to enrich Ernie Camacho, and one of the traditional signs of a manager in over his head. Laffey pitched well in sporadic work (six games in a little over two weeks) before heading to the DL with a right oblique strain, which sidelined through the first week of July. While solid throughout most of the year, he finished poorly in September when he went 0-6; in that stretch his ERA jumped from 3.36 to 4.44. Despite the poor ending, he has the highest SNLVAR of any returning starter, giving him the closest thing any incumbent Indian has to a claim on a rotation spot.
2009 A soft-tossing sinkerballer, Laffey stepped into the rotation in late April to replace the injured Jake Westbrook and was highly effective for two months, firing nine quality starts in his first 11 tries. He sputtered after that, and upon giving up eight runs in back-to-back late-July outings was shipped to the east side of the lake for some adjustments. Laffey was slated to come back up in September, but instead got shut down with an inflamed left elbow. There was no lasting damage, so he'll be ready to compete for a starting job this spring.
2008 Laffey finished the year in the rotation when Cleveland decided they'd had just about enough of Cliff Lee, and he was... functional. A classic, undersized left-hander who gets a ton of groundballs, Laffey's not some big prospect with a lot of projection, but what he is should still be of some value to a big-league staff as either a long reliever or back-end starter.

BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2008-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Have you heard any updates on whether Aaron Laffey and/or Anthony Reyes will be ready for Spring Training? Reyes' shutdown seemed precautionary and less serious, but I'm not convinced Laffey will even pitch in 2009.
(buffum from Austin TX)
Both expected to be ready for Spring Training. I was about to say Winter Haven, but that's not right any more. I can't imagine how many times I'm going to say "Dodgertown" this spring. (Will Carroll)
2008-05-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Caleb, thanks for the chat. I think you have created an inaccurate memory of how great wfan is! You should hear these whiners. Anyway, I was wondering what your take on Aaron Laffey is. Great groundball guy, but he has shown great K/bb totals so far as well. Flukish or could he be a legit #3 type?
(James from NJ)
Impossible! 60,000 watts of clear-channel power, every Mets and Knicks game, Mike and the Maddog--man, that's all I listened to growing up. Can't speak for who's on now, though.

I'm real high on Laffey. Take a look at his PECOTA card (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/pecota/laffeaa01.php), and that pretty red bar above "GB/FB," and that not-quite-as-pretty-but-still-nice one over "ISO." 22 homers in 609 2/3 career minor league innings. The key is keeping those walks down--if he does so he can be a #3, I think. (Caleb Peiffer)
