BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 Ekstrom is one of two pitchers (Andrew Carpenter is the other) to have made at least one big-league appearance every year from 2008 to 2012 without pitching as many as 20 innings in any of them. He received a written warning from MLB last July advising him that he twice had taken too long warming up after entering a game and that he could be fined if he continued to violate Section 1(d) of Baseball's Pace of Game Regulations. So, even if no team needs him for 15 innings this year, at least Ekstrom will be known for something.
2012 Mike Ekstrom spent most of the past two seasons working in relief at Triple-A Durham in the Rays system, making occasional cameos with the big club. The right-hander also has experience starting and provides the Rockies with insurance in case they need a body at some point during the season.
2011 A 12th-round pick by San Diego in 2004, Ekstrom reached the Rays via the waiver wire in February. He broke camp with the big club but was quickly tarred and feathered; the runs he allowed all came in his first four outings. Demoted to accommodate Joaquin Benoit's activation, he pitched sparingly in two other big-league stints. Ekstrom is a ground-ball machine with a good slider if only a so-so sinker. With the Rays' bullpen corps significantly thinned by free agency, he'll get a long look at becoming part of their 2011 crew.
2010 Ekstrom is an easy guy to root for, a hometown kid who went to college at Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego. However, he was hit hard during his stints with the Padres in 2008 and 2009, so his giving you cause has been a bit more dicey. He has a good slider and keeps the ball down, but the rest of his stuff is average, and he needs pinpoint control to get hitters out. That works well enough in the minors, but it's difficult to pitch that way with any consistent effectiveness against major-league hitters, as they'll jump on mistakes inside the zone.
2009 A bit of a system sleeper, righty Michael Ekstrom came alive with a move to the bullpen, where his sinker/slider combination worked much better in short bursts.
2007 Ekstrom is your standard shortish command-and-control right-hander and someone whose average to below-average velocity wouldn`t light up your typical scout`s eyes. He does have a tasty sinker, however, and keeping the ball in the infield can lead to opportunities to transcend the excitement of that Quadruple-A, Kevin Jarvis lifestyle.
