DateQuestionAnswer
2011-06-29 13:30:00Who are your favorite players to deal with, both past or present?
(Gerald from Savannah)
Geez. That's a tough one because there are so many good guys I have dealt with in 24 years of covering baseball. I hate to leave people out but some of my favorites would have to include Sean Casey, John Burkett, Jay Bell, Craig Wilson, Jason Schmidt, Michael Barrett from the past. From the present: Jason Bay, Cole Hamels, Carlos Pena, Scott Rolen, Brandon Phillips, Nyjer Morgan, Neil Walker, Joel Hanrahan, Adam Jones, Max Scherzer, Don Kelly, Chris Perez, Adam Dunn, Matt Capps, Torii Hunter, Kurt Suzuki, Ian Kinsler. (John Perrotto)
2011-06-29 13:30:00Who do you see on the Diamondbacks "buy" radar should they choose to add a player?
(Clayton from Houston)
I'll toss this name out there --- Matt Capps. He'd give them one more good arm for the back end to pair up with Putz and Hernandez. (John Perrotto)
2010-05-25 13:00:00We Nationals fans have gotten ourselves all worked up about Drew Storen coming to the major leagues. It's an exciting development. Still, as a neutral observer, would you say that there is any more reason to expect immediate success from Storen than for other relief prospects brought up to the majors in recent years?
(HalfStreet from Fairfax VA)
I think he'll do fine. A relief pitcher can only make so much of an impact because of the limited number of innings he will pitch but Storen should help bridge the gap from the starters to Matt Capps for now and is defintiely the closer of the future. (John Perrotto)
2010-03-23 16:30:00Hi Matt What are the chances of Matt Capps and Octavio Dotel remaining as closers all year and how do you think they will do? Thanks
(Ed from Cranford, N.J.)
I never can guess when people are going to start and stop being closers. Both seem reasonably likely to keep their jobs, I guess? I wonder why Pittsburgh wouldn't want to keep Matt Capps under team control. That could be a bad sign. (Matt Swartz)
2010-03-15 16:00:00Any big 2011 free agents that you particularly like? Crawford, CLee, Webb, DLee? Who should I hope my team signs. These days it seems like a big contract is almost always a bad deal. Holliday, Bay,
(Ron Lewis from Atl)
Well let’s see here. There’s this guy named Mauer who looks pretty good as a free agent. (Oh, I know, the Twins are probably going to sign him. Other names that I would love to have on my favorite team: Victor Martinez, Adam Dunn, Jayson Werth, and maybe a guy like Wilson Betemit. The big stars in position players mostly have options or are likely to be signed before they get to free agency. The free agent crop next year, isn’t a place to find game changers, but there are some good, solid players in that bunch. On the pitching side, CLee and BWebb are welcome in my clubhouse any day of the week. Preferably, every fifth day. I also still believe in Matt Capps, and he’ll be available to the highest bidder. (Russell A. Carleton)
2010-03-15 16:00:00How long do you think Matt Capps stays as closer in Washington? Do you think Scott Hairston has much value this year? Thanks
(Ed from Cranford, N.J.)
The whole season for Capps. Who will come and take the job away from him? Did Scott Hairston ever have much value? (Russell A. Carleton)
2009-12-15 14:00:00Christina, there are a lot of Pirates fans that are furious over the non-tendering of Matt Capps. While I am not certain he would be worth the $3.5-4M he would receive in arby, I'm wondering if it wasn't worth the risk to accept the arby price tag, hope that he returns to form and then deal him at or before the deadline. Did Huntington screw up, or is there more to this decision than meets the eye?
(karp62 from NY)
Capps really was pretty terrible last season, and at that price, there are usually better buys on the market. If you're holding onto a bounce-back possibility, he's hefty, he's had shoulder issues, and he's two years removed from 2007. Is he going to grow up to be one of the best relievers in the game? That seems unlikely. To put it another way, why pay that for Capps when J.J. Putz signed for less as a free agent? (Christina Kahrl)
2008-07-03 13:00:00I am an unfortunate owner of Matt Capps (and Eric Gagne-ouch). I was lucky enough to pick up Damaso Marte before the rest of the vultures in my league plucked him up. Is he the front runner to get the nod in Capps' absence? Also, what can we expect from Josh Johnson in the second half of the year?
(Brent from Scottsdale)
I'd expect nothing from Johnson - even when a pitcher comes back from TJS, there's usually a lag in his command, and that's especially true when a guy comes back earlier than expected. If you have ample room on your reserve, sure, roster him, but don't activate him until he gets a few starts in to see what's going to happen.

Marte - yes, frontrunner, but don't be surprised if there's some sort of committee at work with Yates, because Marte is a lefty. (Jeff Erickson)
2008-03-19 13:00:00Just curious about your thoughts on Matt Capps or Joakim Soria as picks in fantasy baseball, particularly as they may compare to closers on better teams? They seem to have all the peripheral stats, but are on going to be on bad teams. PS - I've been stationed overseas for 3 years, and the day I get the new BP in the mail is always one of my favorits. Thanks!
(pgjuetten from Germany)
I'd rather have a solid closer on a good team than a solid closer on a bad team, so I'd take Borowski over those two. (Will Carroll)
