BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 One-time closer candidate Robinson Tejeda has been effective as recently as 2010, but he spent most of 2012 injured and as a free agent. He'll need to reprove himself.
2012 Tejeda could be the poster boy for the volatility of the reliever. The Royals primary set-up man in the previous two seasons, he battled shoulder tendinitis, lost three mph off his fastball and his ability to miss bats, and ultimately found himself designated for assignment. He got healthy and pitched well enough in Omaha and elected to become a free agent at the end of the year. Some team will take a chance.
2011 Tejeda is the closest thing the Royals have to a real set-up man, and though his last two seasons' ERAs were the same, there was much more to love about his 2010 campaign. He took a little heat off of his fastball and used it far more often with better location, which cut his walk rate. That improved control came at the expense of his punchouts, but after handing out over six free passes per nine in 2009, things needed to improve. Tejeda still isn't a great eighth-inning option—in light of his control problems, he's probably better-suited for middle relief and lower-leverage situations—but the Royals don't have anyone on hand to replace him unless Gil Meche: Relief Pitcher draws rave reviews.
2010 Tejeda has often flirted with appearing to be a little bit better than his hard-earned journeyman status, and he had one of those tantalizing runs in the second half of last season. Over a stretch of 13 games spanning July 31 to September 20, he was almost literally unhittable, pitching 38 2/3 innings, allowing 14 hits and three runs (0.70 ERA) while walking 14 and striking out 45. Given that the last four appearances were starts, the Royals had visions of finding that elusive third starter behind Greinke and Meche. Unfortunately, the before and after parts of the picture were not nearly so pretty, as Tejeda's chronic control problems involved 35 walks and 27 runs allowed in 35 innings. Nevertheless, the ineffectiveness of Hochevar and Davies means Tejeda will be given another shot to make the back end of the rotation.
2009 Fed up with a pitcher who seemed to be a Quad-A type after repeatedly failing in the majors, the Rangers designated Tejeda for assignment in June, despite the fact that he was blowing people away with his mid-90s heat in the PCL. That was a mistake. The Royals smartly snapped him up, and while Hillman used Tejeda almost exclusively when the Royals were behind—Kansas City was 4-21 in his appearances—this year he should be elevated to a much more important role and a chance to join John Danks and Edinson Volquez as another pitcher the Rangers just plumb missed on.
2008 Tejeda began last season with seven shutout innings against the Red Sox, but it was all downhill from there, as hitters were slugging .499 against him before he was mercifully sent down. Tejeda has always had a big fastball, but his secondary pitches are lacking, and his tendency to work too high in the zone has contributed to his downfall. He was one of the top pitchers in the Domincan Winter League, but he'll still enter spring training on the outside looking in.
2007 After a 2005 that showed much promise, Tejeda was inexplicably cast off by the Phillies, in part because they had to make room for Ryan Franklin, of all people. Tejeda`s 2006 turned out to be a year of marking time. He`s only 25, though, so there are a few more years where that came from. On the bright side, his DERA was really only about a half-run higher than it was the year before, and he did show fairly well when relegated to Oklahoma City and even better when he returned late in the season. He`s not penciled into the rotation but could end up on its backend before the season is out.
2006 Tejeda`s debut season was impressive, especially considering that he had only 31 starts above Class-A before being called up. The 23-year-old with the sinker-curve-change repertoire hung in well the whole season, showing no weaknesses until a sore shoulder cost him two weeks in September. He`ll get a shot at a rotation berth in the spring, but the signing of Ryan Franklin increases the chance that Tejeda will be relegated to the bullpen until Charlie Manuel tires of watching Franklin get hammered.

2011-05-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's the reason why Robinson Tejeda was not considered more seriously for a rotation spot? He performed quite well at the end of the 2009 season. Is it purely due to durability concerns? Control issues?
(Bob from Seattle)
I've not kept up with the skinny on that from the KC media. He and Farnsworth and several others could probably do about as well as several of the guys in the current rotation. I don't know why management made the choices they did. Of course, this spring he was dealing with an injury. (Mike Fast)
