|---|---|---|
| 2009-10-13 14:00:00 | Who's your early pick for biggest surprise team of 2010? (Matt from Whippleville, NY) | I suppose it depends on your definition of what's surprising. The Marlins will probably upset the concept of $ = results by again finishing around .500. The Rangers making a run at 95 wins wouldn't surprise me, but it might surprise some observers. The Reds topping .500 and contending with relative good health (and a whole lot less PT for Willy Taveras)? Seems possible to me. The Angels imploding next year, maybe? The Padres finishing .500? Again, I don't think this year delivered all that many surprises, beyond the Rays' underwhelming their expected record, but I might not have the same capacity for easy startling. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2009-10-05 16:00:00 | The Reds dumped the pitching coach, Dick Pole. Next I'm sure they'll finish rearanging the deck chairs. AFTER THAT, what are the 3 things they should do this offseason? (Browning Nagle from Cinti) | Willy Taveras needs to go, big time. Or at least only be used as a pinch-runner/defensive replacement. A push for a legit cleanup bat--Phillips is good but if he is your cleanup hitter...--would be good but I can ultimately see them only getting someone like Jermaine Dye, which wouldn't be awful but is certainly not a franchise changing signing. And lastly, let Stubbs, Bruce, Bailey, et al play the whole year. (Eric Seidman) |
| 2009-09-07 13:00:00 | To what extent do you consider Dusty Baker a good manager? In 16 years of managing, his first year was his best, and his record on teams sans Bonds is below .500. He's had Cubs teams with talent and never won more than 90 games, and his record with young pitchers is atrocious. I don't see the substance behind the reputation. (BambinosCurse from Boston) | I've been willing to concede that Baker, while no tactician, might have his uses as a veteran skipper of a predominantly veteran ballclub. Paired with a GM with a strong grip on personnel decisions, he can have value. In the abstract, I'd have thought that he and Walt Jocketty would be a good tandem, but then you wind up with Willy Taveras, and it looks more like a murder/suicide pact. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2009-07-07 13:00:00 | Ignoring for a moment the massive whipping they've taken in the last 18 innings (outscored 32-1), should the Reds be buying or selling? Is there a move out there which helps them now and later? (Rick from Chicago) | Well, if Dusty Baker could actually figure out that his Willy Taveras fetish is absolutely KILLING his team, I'd say they should be buying, because they're just 3.5 back and they've got the strongest pitching staff they've had in years.
In other words: SELL SELL SELL. I imagine they could do reasonably well marketing Harang to a contender, though they'd have to make a choice between eating salary and getting Grade-A prospects. Arroyo won't bring back much, but he'll net something, somewhere. A team desperate for a catcher might be able to squint and see a use for Ramon Hernandez. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2009-06-08 14:00:00 | Of course, with Jocketty now in cincy, does that change your answer? (mike from chicago) | Whoops. Sorry about that. I still call it "Shea," too, and often talk about Yankee prospects at Columbus.
I wouldn't trade for a 3B. The guy you get might be a win better than Encarnacion over three months, and he could just as easily be two wins' worse. Maybe that's being optimistic about a disappointing player. The Reds would be better served looking for an OBP source in the outfield, where Willy Taveras and Laynce Nix are killing them. (Is Taveras still trying to steal 100 bases? He has some ground to make up.) (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-04-13 14:00:00 | In order for the Reds to be in the wildcard race come September, they need to __________? (dshugert from Ohio) | The short answer: They Aaron Harang to pitch like he did in 2006 and 2007 while Edinson Volquez and Johnny Cueto advance or at least hold their ground relative to last year while maintaining health. They also need Dusty to get Willy Taveras out of the leadoff spot, and preferably out of the lineup in favor of someone who can get on base regularly. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2009-04-10 16:30:00 | It seems like there's rigid dogma at BP against stolen bases, claiming they're overrated and largely unnecessary. But if someone steals at a high enough clip (say, 85%+) aren't those extra bases very much worthwhile, akin to hitting a double instead of a single? (Charles from Ann Arbor) | You mistake the target; it's more often the problem with who's getting played to generate those steals than the stealing of the bases that is the problem. Stealing bases doesn't make Willy Taveras or Juan Pierre incredibly valuable in the real world; in the real world, stolen bases aren't a category you play people like that to "win," you use tactics as an element of victory. Everybody should keep an active arsenal of tactical options to put pressure on defenses, but going so far as to play Juan Pierre is where the wisdom involved evaporates. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2009-02-10 14:00:00 | Do the Reds have any chance of contending for a wildcard berth this season with the their offense? (Brandon from Charleston) | You've hit the nail on the head as to why they might not; while I like their picking up Ramon Hernandez, picking Willy Taveras is a huge disappointment for a lineup that has OBP issues already, and absent Bruce really blossoming and their adding another outfield bat (I'd rather see Dickerson in center), scoring will be an issue once you take the park into account. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2008-12-11 14:00:00 | If the Cameron deal is dead (according to the latest reports), who is Plan B for the Yanks in CF? (Anthony from Paramus, NJ) | Melky Cabrera or perhaps Willy Taveras if he gets non-tendered tomorrow as expected. (John Perrotto) |
| 2008-07-30 12:30:00 | Since the Rockies aren't selling, any chance they call up Dexter Fowler right after the Olympics to see if he can help and be playoff eligible? It's only Willy Taveras ahead of him..... (Jonathan from New York) | Haven't heard anything on that but I would say it's possible. (John Perrotto) |
