2013 Concerns about depleted catching depth due to Romine’s back injury caused the Yankees to trade reliever George Kontos to the Giants for Stewart on the final day of spring training. Kontos established himself as a dependable reliever on a World Series team, but Stewart wasn’t entirely without value, despite his unsightly slash lines. Like Russell Martin and Eli Whiteside—raise your hand if you’re starting to sense a pattern—Stewart is a strong receiver, saving 13 runs through framing in fewer than 400 innings behind the plate. Unfortunately, his bat also belongs to the Whiteside school. Despite his age, Stewart is under team control through 2016 and won’t make much more than the major-league minimum this season, which should give the incumbent the inside track in the battle for backup duties.
2012 Nobody was going to replace Buster Posey's bat, but at least Stewart matched his dominance over the running game. Stewart threw out 39 percent of baserunners with a strong, accurate arm after having retired 45 percent of attempted basestealers in his long and otherwise undistinguished minor-league career. Stewart didn't hit any worse than Eli Whiteside, and he had the decisive defensive edge.
2011 Chris Stewart has the perfect blend of defense and an inability to hit that will keep him employed as a backup catcher for the better part of the next decade. Run to your bookie and put money on his being a Red Sox backstop within the next five years.
2007 Chris Stewart is a catching prospect with a slingshot of an arm and a BB gun of a bat. There`s not much to get excited about here, but there`s also no reason that Stewart can`t be a perfectly adequate second-string catcher in the big leagues.
2006 Be skeptical of the modest power breakout at Birmingham; it came from a guy who got a lot of days off, and whose bat was regarded as a joke by most observers coming into the season. Still, for someone who projects at a .217 EqA, Stewart`s likely to have a big league career, as he has one of the four or five best catching arms in baseball.
