2005 Coming off a season where he was sidelined by a freak injury (a broken scapula), Ainsworth looked good to go while posting a 2.20 ERA in four spring starts. Spring starts are meaningless, though: In seven games that counted that he could start, he gave up more runs than innings pitched four times. He pitched one game at Ottawa before having elbow surgery, but was able to come back to make two appearances in Aberdeen before the season ended. There's a fair chance he'll return to being the solid pitcher the Orioles thought they were getting from the Giants, though at this point, PECOTA understandably has its doubts.
2003 If Ainsworth’s reputation prior to 2002 was that of a polished safe bet with a relatively low ceiling, he dispelled that last year in two ways. First, by improving in nearly every category in his second go-round at Fresno. Second, by having some success at the major league level, albeit in too short an audition (see Ryan Jensen). He should be in the Giants rotation to stay starting this year.
2002 After some terrible beatings in April, Ainsworth settled down to pitch very well the rest of the season. He's a four-pitch pitcher who gets into the low 90s with his fastball, and he should slide into the Giants' fifth-starter slot this season. The Giants' good infield defense will help him tremendously.
2001 He's probably the Giants' best prospect. Kurt Ainsworth has plus stuff, his control is coming along, and he's well regarded in terms of his ability to pitch out of trouble. He is likely to start the season at Fresno but could be in San Francisco late in the year. His peripheral numbers are good but not great. Many Giants fans think he's a prospect a la Rick Ankiel or Ryan Anderson. He's not, and he's not close.
2000 One of many fine pitching prospects in the Giants' system, Ainsworth had Tommy John surgery a few years ago, but pitched well in the Northwest League. He’s only 21 years old, and even with the worrisome injury history, early reports are very positive.
