DateQuestionAnswer
2013-05-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)How in the world is Bobby Grich not in the HOF?
(Bob from LA)
Combination of voters not doing a good job adjusting for ballpark/era, and his skill set being exactly the type of skill set that gets overlooked: Excellent defense at second base with loads of walks and ballpark-suppressing power. It's not just that he didn't get into the Hall of Fame; when I was at the OCR, the writers there thought I was absolutely out of my mind for suggesting he should. Seriously, they looked at it as though I were making a case for Jose Vidro. Really. (Sam Miller)
2009-05-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Moondog Matinee - both because you learn something about stuff you might not have ever heard (Frogman Henry!), and because you can feel how much they care. Forget the 'roids stuff for a bit. If Griffey continues to hit like Jose Vidro, what do they do with him. Has any other team ever dealt with a similar situation of nostalgia v poor performance?
(mattb from Tacoma)
A ton of them, be it the Astros with Craig Biggio a couple of years ago, or the Brewers taking on Hank Aaron... For the M's, I suspect part of the calculus was giving the fans someone to root for while they rebuild. It's a one-year deal, so they won't dump out of it, but they can start restricting his playing time a lot more than they have. (Steven Goldman)
2008-05-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Was I given a fair shake and how soon before I'm back in Seattle?
(Jeff Clement from Tacoma)
56 plate appearances? Hardly. The Mariners looked as though they were doing a smart thing by bringing up Clement and Wladimir Balentien two and a half weeks ago and mothballing DH Jose Vidro. But the offense hasn't risen from the dead; they're scoring 3.2 runs per game this month, and rather than wait things out, they've decided to panic by shuffling the deck chairs. The nice thing about that it that it probably won't help very much, so I expect to see Clement back before too long because Bill Bavasi won't be able to leave anything alone. (Jay Jaffe)
