2005 Collier has been serving as a de facto 27th or 28th man for the past couple of seasons, and an organization puts those sorts of guys where it damned well pleases, so the fact that he's most frequently played left field during his tour of the International League should not be taken to mean that he can no longer handle the infield positions. The question, given a sustained late-career offensive surge, is why Collier hasn't been a 23rd or a 24th man instead. After the Phillies non-tendered him, he's out there for the taking.
2002 The last player cut in spring training, Collier is a little like Terry Shumpert. He has more power than your average utility man, and he can actually contribute a little in the field. That’s a big improvement for Collier, who had one of the slowest first steps you were ever going to see at shortstop when he first broke in with the Pirates.
2001 A knee injury cost Lou Collier most of 2000. The Brewers gave him some time in center field, trying to see if they could expand his versatility enough to make him worth keeping. He doesn't quite hit enough to make it solely as a backup infielder. If he reaches the 239 at-bats we’ve projected for him, it can only mean that the Brewers have had a dismal 2001.
2000 He’s not a bad platoon-mate for Jose Valentin at shortstop, because he's pasted left-handed pitching for the last two years. He doesn't have the range to play shortstop every day, and there might be something wrong visually, because he seems to have a terribly slow first step.
1999 I think he needs glasses. He doesn't read balls off the bat correctly, and his offensive statistics certainly don't disprove the theory. He had one chance to grab the spotlight and earn himself a starting role somewhere, and he did nothing with it.
1998 Middle infielder with a decent glove and all the power and fury of Rey Ordonez on steroids. Still better than either Womack or Nunez, and he’ll be in the mix for shortstop during spring training.
1997 A small guy, he’s done reasonably well in his extended stays the last three years. Reportedly a good fielder, it doesn’t show in the stats. The $5.5 million difference between his salary and Bell’s would go a long way towards helping Bonifay meet McClatchy’s payroll, especially since there’s virtually no difference in their expected performance.
