BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 The Ruiz suspension could give Humberto Quintero and his anemic bat a shot at an Opening Day roster spot, and maybe even a start.
2012 Humberto Quintero, roughly translated, means “Fifth Catcher,” which is where his 2011 performance should land him on a good team's depth chart. Whatever was wrong with Houston catchers defensively in 2011 extended to the previously cannon-armed Quintero. He's thrown out 44 percent of would-be thieves in his minor-league career, yet allowed a 78 percent success rate in 2011 for Houston. Even pitchers who had previously thwarted the running game, such as lefties J.A. Happ and Wandy Rodriguez, were subjected to opposing base larceny. Any offense Quintero generates in the future will have to be created ex nihilo.
2011 Quintero is one of the best defensive catchers in the game. If he weren't, he wouldn't have lasted as long as he has in the majors, because he contributes almost nothing offensively. Quintero can handle pitchers and possesses a strong arm and impressive mobility in blocking balls. The problem is that the Astros' starting catcher, Jason Castro, has the same profile. Two backup catchers don't add up to a starter. An entire decade has come and gone since Mitch Melusky gave the Astros their last offensively useful season from a backstop. "Then I said, Lord, how long?" (Isaiah 6:11)
2010 For the second straight year, Quintero got a shot at being the Astros' starting catcher, and for the second straight year, he proved that he's a catch-and-throw backup. He's never going to be a good enough hitter to play everyday (in 589 career PAs, he's at .232/.275/.325), but he did throw out 12 of 26 attempted basestealers, following up on a solid 44 percent mark in his long minor-league career; in another life, he'd have made a fine fourth Molina. The Astros must find a better everyday alternative. As is, it's been a depressing run at the position; the last Houston catcher to do anything like solid offensive work in a season of more than 120 games was Craig Biggio—in 1991.
2009 Designated for assignment at spring's end, the perpetual Triple-A catcher in waiting seemed destined for another year in the minors, having been lapped by up-and-comer Towles. Towles flamed out rather spectacularly, and Quintero came along and did little better. People see the 100-point gap in BA and think it was much better, but since he's a weak hitter who never walks, that advantage is mostly imaginary. He did earn the manager's trust though, and that bought him time.
2008 Quintero is more or less what the Astros think Ausmus is, a defense-first catcher with a strong arm and good mechanics behind the plate. Quintero's arm is a true deterrent: thieves were just 9-for-28 against him at Triple-A last year. His bat would be comparable to, or maybe a bit worse than Ausmus's, but the overall package would be better. With Ausmus back, Quintero will return to Triple-A and wait.
2007 Quintero is the quintessential backup catcher. He doesn`t mind carrying his own bag, he`s quiet, doesn`t eat the last of the good salami from the postgame spread, and he showers regularly. What he can`t do is play every day or hit enough to push even Brad Ausmus aside. Guys like Quintero don`t dream of being Ivan Rodriguez someday; they dream of being Henry Blanco. One wonders if that fan club has a newsletter.
2006 Quintero has a tremendous throwing arm and had some moderate success with the bat in the minors, though not enough to knock anyone`s socks off. If he`s going to have a major league career, he needs to either find the right golfing buddy, a la Raul Chavez, or get about 10% better with the bat. He`s already got the defensive skills to fall into the eight-year backup catcher role somewhere if he`s lucky.
2005 In spring training last year Quintero picked off two unsuspecting baserunners and threw out another would-be basestealer with David Wells on the mound. Asked after the game what he thought of his battery mate, Wells played the role of campaign manager: "It's stupid; he's showing me up. He's throwing 110 (mph) down to first and I'm only pitching 88 to home plate. I'm retiring if they don't take him with us." Wells reneged on his vow after Quintero started the year in Triple-A, but at least the young backstop finally hit better in addition to terrorizing baserunners. He profiles as a low-strikeout, low-walk hitter with modest pop, but the Pads are wishcasting for some .290 seasons with doubles power. With Ramon Hernandez's contract up at year's end, they may give Quintero his shot sooner than expected.
