2013 Signed to a two-year deal in January 2012 to avoid arbitration, the previously durable Masset tried to rehab a shoulder issue that began dogging him in spring training, but he never joined the big club and eventually required surgery in September. A hard thrower with spotty command before the injury, Masset made at least 70 appearances every year from 2009 to 2011, but now is a huge question mark, even as the Reds owe him $3.1 million this season.
2012 Masset was a nifty deadline pickup for Ken Griffey Jr. in 2008, and since then he's given the Reds three years of durable high-leverage relief as Dusty's designated eighth-inning tight-game guy. Unfortunately, cracks started to show late last summer, as Masset generated fewer swings and misses in the second half, getting hammered for an 898 OPS against and a .412 BABIP. There was no injury that's come to light, so you can try to figure out if it was the workload wearing him down, the league finally catching up to him, or just one of those slippery problems with location and execution that you hope pitching coach Bryan Price can iron out.
2011 The 2008 trade that sent Ken Griffey Jr. to the White Sox may have mostly been about salary relief, but thanks to Masset, the Reds have seen substantial on-field returns from the swap. The durable right-handed reliever has accounted for a combined 150-plus innings over the past two seasons, while showing no platoon split to speak of. Last season, balls in play didnít fall his way as often they had in 2009, but his defense-independent performance was a dead ringer for that of previous campaigns. The sinkerballerís strikeout rate has increased in each of his major-league seasons, and reached heights it had never before attained in 2010, handing him the keys to a potent mixture of punchouts and grounders that allowed him to work around walks with few ill effects. Massetís sustained success was rewarded with the highest-leverage innings in the Redsí pen outside of anyone but closer Francisco Cordero, pricey rookie sensation Aroldis Chapman, and ageless lefty Arthur Rhodes.
2010 Oh, the gifts the BABIP fairy can leave under your pillow. The second-best prospect sent to the White Sox in the Brandon McCarthy trade, the hard-throwing Masset struggled with the Sox, was flipped to Cincy in the Ken Griffey Jr. deal, and excelled as a set-up man last year. Still, a quick look at his opponentsí batting averages on balls in play shows that his extreme performances in Chicago and Cincinnati have been largely the result of the defenses behind himónearly a hundred points lower than with the Sox. The good news for Masset and the Reds is that Nick also improved his strikeout, walk, and line-drive rates in 2009, had a typical percentage of his fly balls leave the park, and, as a slight ground-ball pitcher, is well-suited to the Gap.
2009 Part of the package the Reds received for Griffey, Masset's a reminder that a strong fastball doesn't always lead to big strikeout numbers or a power pitcher's profile, though thanks to wildly varying defensive play behind him, he neither pitched as badly as he appeared to with the White Sox, nor as well as he seemed to do with the Reds. As with so many things, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Now that Matt Belisle's been non-tendered, Masset could fit into the swingman/emergency starter role.
2008 The Sox's fascination with having unpleasantly wild flameouts in the pen led to some rather nondescript additions last year, but Nick Masset deserves some notice for mixing mid-90s velocity with a sharp curve.
2007 Nick Masset, a hard thrower, has both started and relieved in his minor league career. His safest bet for landing a job after going to the White Sox as part of the Brandon McCarthy deal will be in their bullpen. A year at Triple-A is more likely.

2008-09-29 10:30:00Tigers/White Sox Play-In GameDavid (Boston): In retrospect, was the Griffey trade a good one for the White Sox?

I don't think you could call it a bad trade, it isn't as though Danny Richar or Nick Masset would have done anything to help the Sox in September. Furthermore, I don't think they will be missed in the future either as I don't know that Richar will out-perform Sox future 2B Chris Getz. (William Burke)
