2006 A journeyman reliever straight out of Central Casting, Brower was ridden hard in two years as a Giant, pitching a combined 193 innings and making 89 appearances in 2004 alone. He got off to a horrible start in 2005 and the Giants jettisoned him in mid-June. The Braves immediately snapped him up and used in low-leverage situations, where he performed adequately. Where he once did a very good job of handling righties, last year he was an equal-opportunity whipping boy (.301/.405/.483 vs. right, .303/.375/.505 vs. left). That`s mop-and-bucket territory. Expect to find him somewhere with a minor-league contract.
2005 A ROOGY if ever there was one, Brower helped the Giants by soaking up 93 mostly middle innings (after tossing 100 in '03) and holding righty batters to a microscopic .213/.267/.282. But he continued to show he lacks a pitch to neutralize lefties, as they made a .333/.411/.508 pińata out of him. Tightness and fatigue in his throwing bothered him late in the year, so the Giants have two good reasons to limit his workload in '05.
2003 Say this about Omar Minaya. When he sees a hole, he’s not afraid to go fill it, even if it means indirectly admitting he goofed the first time. Acquiring Brower for Bruce Chen was one of three such circular deals made by Minaya last season. The Cliff Floyd merry-go-round looks like a wash for now, though the way the two deals unfolded left Expos fans scratching their heads. The other two exchanges—Geoff Blum to Chris Truby to Jose Macias and Scott Strickland to Bruce Chen (and Dicky Gonzalez) to Jim Brower were net losses, though minor ones.

Not that the Expos were the first team to quickly grow tired of Bruce Chen’s act. Hell, they were the fourth NL East team alone to do so. Still, getting a fungible reliever like Brower at the end of the chain didn’t garner any Executive of the Year votes, especially when Brower’s ERA jumped by a run in Montreal. Then again, a moderate 2003 rebound for Brower wouldn’t be too far-fetched. Raise your hand if you knew Joey Eischen would pitch like Randy Myers in his prime last year.
2002 In terms of straight value, Eddie Taubensee for Jim Brower worked out a lot better than expected for the Reds, so if Rob Pugmire, the other pitcher in the deal, develops, so much the better. Brower gave the Reds 22 games in which he worked two or more innings in relief, and with the Reds’ rotation in a shambles, that was exactly what they needed to either finish off lost causes or get games to Danny Graves and Scott Sullivan. Like Gene Nelson before him, Brower was forced out of his best role by the team’s need for a starter, but he’ll be a valuable long reliever if the Reds let him.
2001 Jim Brower has a nice slider and a bunch of stuff that isn’t a nice slider. Pressed into the rotation when Charles Nagy and Jaret Wright broke down on Injury Day, he was an adequate replacement through June (4.89 ERA) before collapsing in July (13.09 ERA). He won’t kill you as your mop-up man and emergency starter. Brower has been traded to the Reds with Rob Pugmire for Eddie Taubensee. Hart 1, Bowden 0.
