2013 Two years into Beltre’s five-year, $80-million contract, the Rangers couldn’t have imagined a better return on their investment. He backed up a strong 2011 with an even better performance in 2012, earning a second consecutive Gold Glove in the process. At the plate, Beltre appears to get better with age, though that theory will be tested toward the end of his contract. He will eventually lose his fantastic range at the hot corner, but he has shown no signs it'll happen in 2013. Thus far, Beltre has given Texas the full package: He hits for average with 30-home-run pop, he provides an elite glove at third base, and his on-field mannerisms are entertaining as ever. Just don’t touch him on the head.
2012 After signing a massive five-year, $80M free agent contract in the 2010 offseason, Beltre arrived in Arlington as the so-called “consolation prize” for losing out on Cliff Lee. After he won over the fans with his gold-glove work at third and his 65 extra-base-hits at the plate (including 32 homers), the signs that filled Rangers Ballpark in Arlington pondering, “Cliff Lee Who?” weren’t of the ironic variety. In year one of his deal, the 32 year-old Dominican more than lived up to the hype. He plays the game with an infectious and precocious style that makes it feel like his presence was missing all along. As an added bonus, his teammates quickly learned of the hidden joys that can erupt when they unexpectedly touched the top of his head. Cue the reaction.
2011 Beltre's decline following his departure from the Dodgers was a Safeco-spawned myth, which both the Red Sox and super-agent Scott Boras knew could be remedied by a furlough in Fenway. Although a change in home field was just what the Dominican needed, Beltre's road numbers helped him build a case for the American League MVP: the third baseman posted a 953 OPS on the road, 73 points above his Fenway figure, and backed up his offensive exploits with some of the slickest fielding available at his position. The righty's pronounced platoon splits from his latter days in Seattle (710 OPS vs. RHP, 917 OPS vs. LHP from 2007-2009) didn't make the cross-country trip, but even if they reappear, his new employer can take solace in the combined .297/.341/.513 line he's mustered away from home over the past four years.
2010 Beltre is an excellent defender and in most seasons an acceptable hitter, but he's not smart enough to wear a cup. The world found out more than it wanted to know about Beltre's privates when a bad-hop grounder, with almost Darwinian precision, scored a bull's-eye on August 12. Yet, the testicular contusion that cost Beltre 18 games wasn't his most important injury of the season. That was the bone spurs in his left shoulder that required surgery and not only required 30 games on the DL, but sapped his power. Pitchers preyed on his weakened condition, challenging him, and his walk rate nearly went the way of his testicles. The Mariners signed Beltre as he came off an outlier of a peak that is as far off the beaten path of his career as Santo Domingo is from Samarkand. Because of this, he is perceived as a disappointment, and there is some truth in that, but it is also true that Safeco Field has a strong prejudice against right-handed hitters. In his four healthy years as a Mariner, Beltre hit .255/.312/.420 with a home run once every 26 at-bats at home, .276/.326/.485 with a home run every 24 at-bats on the road. That's not a huge difference, but it is a significant one, and had the Mariners played in a more equitable ballpark, or even a favorable one, the perception of Beltre might be very different, especially given just how valuable his fielding was to the ballclub. Beltre will never again finish second on an MVP ballot, but he's young enough to recapture some of his old luster playing in a friendlier hitting environment.
2009 Beltre hasn't quite fulfilled the expectations placed upon him when he debuted as a 19-year-old Dodger in 1998, but his brand of solidly above-average offense and superior defense has made him a valuable, if unspectacular, contributor for the Mariners. Beltre's recent performance level could be threatened by his surgery last September to remove bone spurs in his shoulder and replace a ligament in his thumb, though there's also a chance that he may once again summon the magical powers that only come out his contract years. If he can stay healthy, Beltre will remain on track for membership in the Edgar Renteria/Johnny Damon Hall of Fame of good players whose early career starts and consistent compiling may one day make voters for the real Hall distinctly uncomfortable.
2008 Adrian Beltre's 2007 season was pretty much a repeat of his 2006. The consistency is welcome, as is the fact that he won his first Gold Glove-his reputation at the hot corner has been golden for his entire career, even if some defensive metrics aren't big fans. After a few years of teeth-gnashing and clothes-rending by the writerly classes, the market seems to have caught up to Beltre's contract-$12 million per year for the tail end of his peak doesn't seem so unreasonable when 34-year-old Mike Lowell will be making the same for the next three years.
2007 Beltre tantalized us by jumping from Double-A to the majors at age 19, and set eyes popping with a .272 EqA at 20. He did a smidge better at age 21, but, since then, has only topped that age-20 season once: His out-of-his-mind walk year in 2004. Now two years into his five-year, $64-million deal with Seattle and on the verge of his 28th birthday, it seems safe to label that year a fluke and say that what you see is what you get. Beltre`s 2006 rate stats almost precisely matched his career numbers. It would be more tempting to see his second-half surge as a harbinger of good things to come if he didn`t do something similar every year. Beautiful glovework makes him a six-win player--a definite asset, but not a superstar.
2006 Baseball Prospectus`s other new book hitting shelves this spring, Baseball Between The Numbers, examines a variety of hot-button debates, from steroids to the best player of all-time to how to build a playoff roster--and whether players perform better just before free agency. Even after adjusting for age and other factors, the answer is yes, they do. Beltre is used as a prime example, but he`s actually forged an atypical career path. A typical walk-year spike might mark the culmination of several years of development, but Beltre`s OPS the last five seasons was 722, 729, 714, 1017, and 717. Beltre will never hit .334 again, but he still has power in his arsenal. Look for production somewhere between the 2004 masterpiece and the dregs of `01-`03 and `05, something along the lines of .280/.340/.500 with continued great defense. Given Richie Sexson`s age and lack of defensive value, when all`s said and done Beltre could still be the better of the M`s two `04 off-season deals.
2005 Exhibit A for the folks who believe in the Salary Drive. After several years of unfulfilled promise and somewhat aimless wandering, Beltre finally put it all together and put together a season worthy of a Most Valuable Mortal Player award. Of course, fat lot of good it does the Dodgers, who suffered through some miserable seasons waiting for Beltre to gel and provide some serious bang for the buck. The Mariners signed him to a five-year, $65 million deal. His 2005 season will land somewhere between that extremely conservative PECOTA and a 2004 season he'll never again replicate.
2003 Of all the surprising numbers above, the name under “TEAM” may be the most eye-opening. A full season removed from a dicey appendectomy, Beltre’s rebound on the road to uberstardom seemed a foregone conclusion. Instead, his .238/.289/.359 first half challenged Chino’s cow pastures for the title of biggest stink in the L.A. area. The Dodgers stayed patient with him, balking on a Scott Rolen swap while praying for a second-half rebound to fuel their playoff drive. Mission largely accomplished: .281/.319/.509 after the break. If Beltre rediscovers the second-year patience that netted him a walk every 10 times up, he could still be a lineup anchor. The number next to “Age” offers hope.
2002 A couple of things that should scare Dodgers opponents: first, Beltre may be a year younger than indicated. Second, despite undergoing two surgeries related to his appendix, Beltre came back relatively quickly and demonstrated a full skill set, hitting for average and power, drawing walks, stealing bases, and playing very good defense. He never showed all his skills at the same time, but that consolidation will definitely come. The Dodgers have not yet signed Beltre to a long-term contract. He is arbitration-eligible, so this is their very last shot at signing him at a reasonable cost. He will be one of the big four or five third basemen in baseball for the next several years, along with Eric Chavez, Troy Glaus, and Hank Blalock. Beltre will end up underrated if he stays in Chavez Ravine.
2001 Continuous improvement is one of the things you most like to see in a young player. Adrian Beltre improved from 1999 to 2000, and he also improved within 2000, having a very good second half. The early-signing issue is already a fading memory; what remains is the talent.
2000 What isn’t in dispute in the Beltre case is his real birth date of April 7, 1979. This means that last year he was a 20-year-old putting up a .263 EqA with fair defense. That separates him from Scott Rolen and puts him on par with Andruw Jones and Alex Rodriguez as the most valuable properties in baseball. As with the draft free agents from 1996 (Travis Lee, et al), if Beltre is allowed to become a free agent, it will serve as an illustration of just how much the current system restricts the earnings of players in their early 20s. Regardless of his age or contract status, he’s on the brink of stardom.
1999 Beltre vs. Rolen is going to be the National League's A-Rod vs. Nomar for years to come. The Bonilla trade removes a convenient excuse for the Dodgers to mess with him, although I expect him to hit enough next year to make it a non-issue. Better defensive player than the numbers above indicate, with a strong arm. Might already be the best player on the team.
1998 Probably the best prospect in baseball, overall. A solid defensive third baseman with a decent batting eye, powerful stroke and an uncanny ability to adjust his bat plane in midswing. Will probably start the year in San Antonio, struggle for three weeks, then continue to do his Mike Schmidt imitation on all available pitching, and then it’s on to Albuquerque. Will seize the Dodger third base job in 1999. His defensive shortcomings are easily fixed,so don’t be put off by reports of problems. Won’t walk as much as projected—my software must have missed some dosage of something.
1997 The Dodgers have a number of very good prospects, and may actually start deserving their annual Rookie of the Year awards soon. Beltre is a leading candidate for one. He’ll spend the year adjusting to AA and AAA, and probably be a September callup in 1998. The Dodgers tend to fast-track their real prospects, and let the others take the Brian Traxler career path. Beltre’s the real deal.
