2013 An astute pickup for GM Terry Ryan, Burton rebounded from two injury-wrecked years after having established himself as a quality reliever with the Reds in 2007-09. From June 12 through July 29, Burton made 16 appearances, each of an inning or more (16 2/3 innings total) without giving up a single run. He's not likely to put up a 2.18 ERA again, but he's a cheap, high-quality short reliever who may draw some interest on the trade market in July or August.
2011 Last season was something of a lost one for Burton, since the righty was too tired to make his season debut until late May. We don’t mean to sound flippant—it’s not like Burton was lying in bed, hitting the snooze button and asking Walt Jocketty for “five more minutes”—but it’s impossible to be more specific, since multiple visits to specialists and a battery of tests failed to identify the cause of his debilitating fatigue and lack of strength. Once he managed to make it onto a mound, Burton didn’t look particularly lethargic, pitching to his career Triple-A averages in just under 40 innings with Louisville. He returned to the majors in time to make four scoreless late-September appearances, and should be a useful middle-inning arm this season, barring a recurrence of his unexplained ailment.
2010 Coming off a latissimus injury in 2008, Burton struggled mightily over the first three months of 2009, allowing more than half of his inherited runners to score and posting a meager 1.5 K/BB. That earned him a demotion on July 1. He returned at the end of the month and gave up five runs in 2 2/3 innings, after which he was shut down with shoulder fatigue. The rest seemed to do him well, as he returned just two weeks later and, after a poor initial outing, posted a 1.66 ERA and a handsome 3.17 K/BB with 19 Ks in 21 2/3 innings while allowing just 20 percent of his inherited runners to score. Burton will challenge Nick Masset for the eighth-inning job this year.
2009 A Mariano Rivera pitch-alike, Burton encountered adversity this season in the form of a strained lat muscle—described by some in the media as an injury to his side, but more accurately referred to as his shoulder. The injury cost him nearly two months on the DL, and when he came back in September, he was ineffective (2.23 ERA prior to the injury, 7.84 after). There isn't much data on latissimus injuries for pitchers, but given an off-season's rest it should be completely healed for this season.
2008 Burton is the other Rule 5 pick (after Josh Hamilton) that stuck in Cincinnati last season. Some are suspicious of the injuries that kept him in minor league rehab assignments much of the first half of the season, but regardless of their legitimacy, those assignments paid dividends when the coaches at Louisville got Burton to throw his slider more often, rather than over-relying on his good cut fastball. Adjustments made, Burton was lights-out in the second half, and finished the season as the Reds' second-most effective reliever.

DateQuestionAnswer
2012-07-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Just wondering: 1> Which CC would you rather have for the rest of this year? Coco Crisp or Carl Crawford and 2> Could Jared Burton be the Twins closer next year? Thanks!
(Finley from Ontario)
If you're talking fantasy, probably Carl - although I wouldn't expect much beyond steals out of either of them. In real life, depends on how Crawford looks in the field I guess. At cost, definitely Coco though.

I suppose Burton could be the closer next year. He's having a pretty good season, but he looks to be a pretty normal reliever in general. I don't follow the Twins enough to know who their other options are. (Dan Turkenkopf)
2008-05-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)Does Steve Philips make you chuckle? He recently suggested in an ESPN article that the Reds should trade Dunn for Matt Cain and Jared Burton and Affeldt for Phil Hughes.
(jdtk99 from Iowa)
I'd get a heartier laugh out of the man if he was in a front office instead of a studio; I suspect "Studio Transaction Analysis" would make for a really pointless exercise. (Christina Kahrl)
