2011 It’s hard to believe that Bonderman is still only 28, given the popular conception of his epic fall from the pinnacle of success. His last year in Detroit demonstrated that he was healthy enough to pitch, but not that he could still pitch effectively—his fastball struggled to break 90, and his strikeout rate sagged. While injuries may have left him a shadow of the pitcher he once was, it’s fair to wonder whether he was ever truly that special. Pitchers who can show major-league success before they can legally order a vodka tonic are rare and often special, so Bonderman’s early arrival, strikeout rate, and darting slider led to numerous forecasts of future Cy Young awards. Yet he was most notable for continually underperforming his peripherals—only once did the pre-injury Bonderman post an ERA below 4.50, despite SIERAs that were frequently more than a full run lower. His career has been a putt that analysts have continually misread, so if there’s any consolation to be had as he starts his second act amidst dire predictions, it’s that his performance has routinely defied expectation.
2010 Looking back to 2006-07, Bonderman lived and died by his slider. It was his best pitch, and he threw it something like a third of the time. That's a lot—there are quite literally no pitchers who throw sliders more often than that. Some pitches are inherently harder on the arm than others—curves, screwballs, sliders, split-fingers, even spitballs from the Deadball Era—and pitchers who rely on them too heavily tend to have just a couple of years of dominance before the damage catches up to them. It isn't clear from Bonderman's struggles this season whether he's still injured but fixable, or healthy and permanently damaged, but the strong likelihood is that he'll never be able to throw the slider that well or that often ever again. That seems likely to make him just another pitcher, and not a particularly good one.
2009 Bonderman never seemed right from day one in 2008. His stuff was down across the board and his once-plus command had completely disappeared. He finally admitted to some shoulder discomfort, and a diagnosis found not structural damage, but rather thoracic outlet compression syndrome, which pinches the nerves and blood flow to his arm, causing clotting. It's a serious condition that required season-ending surgery, and while Bonderman is optimistic and plans on reporting to spring training early to start his throwing program, we don't have enough historical evidence to predict a career path in any particular direction.
2008 Bonderman's disappointing season was really a disappointing final ten starts as he slowly succumbed to a sore elbow. The injury appears to have begun affecting his performance in July. For the first four months of the season, he had his usual poor luck with balls in play, but his peripherals were fine. Starting July 24, his walk rate doubled, his strike percentage dropped, his home-run rate and HR/FB rate doubled and his K/BB dropped from 4.0 to barely 1.5. Bonderman simply had less command of less effective stuff for six weeks before being shut down in early September. All signs point to a full recovery in 2008.
2007 Bonderman is as good a bet as any pitcher in the American League to win a Cy Young Award, provided that Johan Santana gets hit by a bus or something. His peripherals last year pointed toward an ERA in the low 3.00s, and opponents hit just .169 against his deadly slider, remarkable for a pitch that he throws as often as one third of the time. He`s young, healthy, has been handled carefully, and his trends are improving; he just needs to settle down a bit. Hitters leading off innings hit .286/.315/.469 against Bonderman last year (versus the .249/.311/.382 compiled by subsequent batters), and he`s struggled in the first inning. He`s also had a couple of dugout temper tantrums following frustrating outings. The Tigers think that his new contract extension will calm him down. Even without it, natural maturation combined with some good luck should make him a very good pitcher for a very long time.
2006 Bonderman was having a very good season through about July, but then he tried to pitch through a sore elbow and was awful for the last two months of the season. Assuming the tendinitis clears up--although it frequently recurs, so that is not a safe assumption--he was a better pitcher than his overall stat line indicates, so he should be better than the projections that are built from it.
2005 Great season of progress. Bonderman spotted his fastball-slider combination more aggressively last season, increasing his strikeout rate without any trade-off in terms of command. What's more, he improved dramatically as the season went on, compiling a 3.70 ERA after the All-Star break and a 2.53 ERA in September. His ERAs have been higher than his peripheral stats suggest that they should be, and while that can sometimes be a sign of a pitcher who has difficulty working from the stretch, for the most part it's just plain old bad luck. Bonderman should beat that PECOTA, and might even be one of the best pitchers in his league. To the Tigers' credit, they've done what they can do contain any damage from his premature promotion, limiting their barely-legal prodigy to 90 pitches per start last season.

DateQuestionAnswer
2013-04-10 20:00:00 (link to chat)You hear anything about the rumor of Hultzen getting called up and Maurer sent down?
(DanMizer from Boston, MA)
Hi Dan:

I saw Geoff Baker's article today at his blog at the Seattle Times. It sounds like Baker was just speculating, though I agree with his reasoning that Brandon Maurer is making a pretty big jump and the team might change course quickly if things aren't working out. The article mentioned Jeremy Bonderman as well as Danny Hultzen as a possible replacement. (Mike Gianella)
2011-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you care to expand on your worries over the Tigers' future....weak farm? Iffy everyday lineup? The rotation is locked up for a long while. Thank you.
(lemppi from Iowa)
Weak farm; Kevin had them 27th in the organizational rankings this spring. They'll have some financial flexibility after this season, and while Mike Ilich isn't afraid to spend, they absolutely have to avoid the entanglements that produced so much dead salary over the past few years. Carlos Guillen, Magglio Ordonez, Dontrelle Willis, Nate Robertson, Jeremy Bonderman - I can't think of a team that had so many contracts of $10 million per year blow up on them all at once. (Jay Jaffe)
2011-01-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Assuming Pettitte retires, what do you think will happen to the Yankees rotation? A lot of Ivan Nova and Sergio "Valente" Mitre? The Freddy Garcia Granny Gooden Show? Cashman relenting and trying Joba as a starter? Any chance any candidates among hyped prospects gets called up in the 2nd half after a strong showing in AA?
(Nick Stone from New York City)
Hey Nick! Shifting gears away from the Hall for the next few questions...

If I had to guess I think that barring a winter trade, the Yankees will begin the season by rounding out their rotation with one outside acquisition (Garcia and Jeremy Bonderman being the most obvious options but hardly the only ones) and Nova or Mitre in the five spot, with the other and David Phelps the next lines of defense in case either of those slots need to be filled. Once those possibilities are exhausted, barring some other hotshot from the minors making a case — and I don't think any of the three Killer B's are within half a season's range given that they don't even have much Double-A experience - that's when I think the Yankees will make a major move. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-12-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)How Concerned should Tigers fans be about Rick Porcello's drop in K's last year? He's probably not the next Justin Vernlander after all, but is he the next Jeremy Bonderman?
(DetroitDale from Tallahassee, FL)
He ought to be more durable, but Porcello has to prove he's more than a one-trick pony, otherwise nobody's going to be swinging and missing. A great sinker is a thing of beauty, but if everyone knows it's coming... (Christina Kahrl)
2010-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the answer. Bad contracts for Dombrowski? Dontrelle Willis 3-yr/$29M. Nate Robertson 3-yr/$21M. Jeremy Bonderman 4-yr/$38M (I did favor that deal though at the time). Pudge R a $13M option picked up for no apparent reason. Guillen as you noted. He had some real clunkers. I like the guy on the whole...but he created some of the problems they face currently...it wasn't all bad luck.
(lemppi from Ankeny, IA)
Yes, those were questionable, except for Bonderman. I would still argue that overall he deserves a solid grade. I'll say something else in his favor: he hasn't blown any money on Chan-Ho Park, or players like Chan Ho. He signed Brandon Lyon for one year, then let Ed Wade sign him for three. Now, the bullpen has been a weakness for the Tigers at times, so you can argue about this, but I would say it's better to stay cheap than to take blind shots in the dark. (Steven Goldman)
2009-10-07 14:30:00 (link to chat)Hi Jay .... thanks for the chat! Do you think the Tigers have their own version of the "Joba Rules" for Verlander and Porcello, and that's why we didn't see Verlander for an inning late in last night's "all hands on deck" game?
(dianagramr from NYC)
I don't think so, but I do think that Jim Leyland did a lousy job of managing his pitching staff last night. Then again, when all you've got is one errant pitch from Brandon Lyon or Fernando Rodney standing between you and the offseason, then some of the blame also falls on the GM for not getting you the right parts.

Having said that, I think the Tigers have done a fantastic job of handling Verlander and Porcello, getting a greater number of useful innings out of both at young ages without injury than, say, the Yankees have out of their blue chip youngsters. On the other hand, Jeremy Bonderman is something of a cautionary tale from the same organization. Sometimes they just get hurt.

Verlander's beyond the "Injury Nexus" window, so the "rules" don't apply to him in the same way they apply to an under-23 pitcher. Bringing him into last night's game is something Leyland might have considered, but remember, the kid's thrown over 500 pitches over his last four starts, and may not have a lot of gas in the tank coming back under such circumstances. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-02-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will, I look at Matt Cain and say "he's pitched 200+ innings 3 years in a row. This trend shows that he'll likely do the same this year." You look at him and say "his heavy workload on a young arm is more likely breaking it down, rather than proving he's capable." You're clearly right, but I have a hard time thinking I'm completely off base.
(ericmilburn from San Francisco)
I understand why you think that, but over and over we see that the mileage put on an arm before age 24-25 is, no matter how "babied", damaging in the long and short term. Maybe he's the freak that can handle it, but I'm talking about probabilities not certainties. Carlos Zambrano is the comp that comes to mind here, or Jeremy Bonderman. With him and every good young pitcher, I hope I'm wrong. (Will Carroll)
2009-02-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Give me something positive about the Tigers - my girlfriend love them, but she's convinced they're returning to their old form.
(D-Rock from Ohio)
Have you not seen PECOTA? Have you not seen Kevin rave about Porcello? Jeremy Bonderman is said to be looking good in camp. They have a really nice cap. (Will Carroll)
2008-12-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will, any clue as to what we can expect from Jeremy Bonderman this year? Any comps out there?
(don from ann arbor, MI)
Kenny Rogers is the closest comp pitching-wise, tho David Cone is close. I think he'll come back and essentially be a bit behind where he was until mid-season. It might, in the long run, be a good thing since even handled smartly, he has a lot of innings on a young arm. The more I think about Bonderman, they more I really like the Kenny Rogers comp for his career, except maybe longevity. (Will Carroll)
2008-06-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)If Chris B. Young keeps this up, can we assume that Pecota will not be quite as bullish on him next season?
(Brent from Raleigh)
Maybe, but it could also be one of those quixotic things like with Jeremy Bonderman where PECOTA keeps predicting a breakout that will never come. (Nate Silver)
2008-05-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is the riddle to the Tigers as simple as fixing the pen and letting everything else fall into place?
(Jim Clancy from Exhibition Stadium)
Well, there is still the ironing out of the best possible alignment of their defense and the lineup's needs, and it would be swell if Jeremy Bonderman started living up to our expectations, and Justin Verlander up to everybody's. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-04-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)Jeremy Bonderman? According to pitch f/x, he still has the velocity, and isn't missing by a WHOLE lot. It's hard to believe he'd have a backwards K:BB rate at this point of the year though...
(Rob from DC)
The K/BB isn't just a little off either, he's walking almost 7 hitters per. I can honestly say I don't know what his problem is, but I wouldn't touch him with someone else's roster right now. (Marc Normandin)
