BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 Pummeled for a 7.06 ERA in 133 big-league innings from 2007-2009, Dumatrait's time appeared to have come and gone, but he resurfaced with the Twins and survived in a relief role. A closer look shows that his underlying peripherals were no better than before, but his timing was; batters hit .231/.333/.308 via a .256 BABIP with runners in scoring position, compared to .325/.416/.597 with a .328 BABIP with the bases empty. When those splits even out, he'll be just another tomato can lefty.
2010 A decade since Phil Dumatrait was a first-round pick, scouts still cling to the idea that he can someday live up to it, but a career 7.06 ERA and 1.81 WHIP argue against.
2009 The Pirates grabbed Dumatrait off of waivers from the Reds after the 2007 season, and he wound up making the club in spring training as a reliever, moving into the rotation in May. There, he had moments where he looked like he might carve out some kind of career. However, three quality starts in 11 does not a fifth starter make, and after hurting his shoulder in July, he had surgery in September that will make for a late start to his 2009 campaign.
2008 Lefty Phil Dumatrait had a nice second go-around at Triple-A, although it was driven by an extremely low BABIP. Called up in August, he posted the highest ERA (minimum 15 IP) by a Reds pitcher in 100 years. Undeterred, the Pirates picked him off waivers after the World Series.
2007 Although not a junkballer per se--he`ll nudge a fastball over 90 once in a while--Dumatrait`s problem is the absence of a true out-pitch. Without one, he was easy meat in the veteran-heavy International League. Another year removed from the Tommy John surgery that cost him 2004, his poor command of a modest assortment no longer looks like a recovery issue, rather he looks more like a journeyman in the making. He`s a little tougher on lefties, so a move to the pen might make sense.
