2013 Dayton Moore has never met a speedy, banjo-hitting center fielder he could resist. So when the Royals were filling out their roster at the end of spring training last year, it was only natural that Bourgeois found his way to Kansas City. He's hopeless against right-handed pitching, so credit the Royals for using him in a platoon and limiting exposure to his weakness. He was designated for assignment in November, and the Rays signed him to a minor-league deal. He and Rich Thompson will run wild in the Durham outfield as Triple-A insurance for post-surgery Sam Fuld.
2012 At the end of July, Bourgeois was living large. He was hitting .354/.374/.449, had stolen 22 bases in just 132 plate appearances, and had just been handed the starting center-field job. But his success was illusory, with stats compiled mostly against left-handed pitching, which he's always hit well. The first three weeks of August became a seemingly endless blur of weak grounders and popups as Bourgeois wasn't even doing well against lefties en route to a .155/.210/.190 in the 14 games he started. Returned to a platoon role thereafter, he remained confused until back-to-back starts against Tom Milone and John Lannan on September 9-10, when he went a combined 6-for-10. As a platoon outfielder with great wheels who can play second base in a pinch, he could help even a good team.
2011 After signing Bourgeois as a minor-league free agent, the Astros gave him his first extended look at the major leagues last season. His hometown organization was the sixth to give him a shot, but won't be his last; though he's Bourgeois, Jason just doesn't control the means of production. Outside of showing good plate discipline, the speedy slap-hitter did little to distinguish himself. He began his professional career as a middle infielder but now plays strictly in the pastures, which hurts his value as a potential 25th man. Undaunted, the Astros kept him on the 40-man roster after 2010 and think he can help as a fourth or fifth outfielder. Fun fact: Houston natives Carl Crawford and Michael Bourn were on his Little League team, which may have given Houston's current farm system a run for its money in terms of future major-league talent.
2010 Speedster Jason Bourgeois had to be kicked to the outfield when he could handle the inner-diamond life; reaching to achieve modest ambitions there, he's 10 years into his pro career, and now that he's an Astro via a winter waiver claim, on his sixth organization.
