BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2010 Chris Bootcheck never lived up to his billing as the Angels' first-round draft pick in 2000, posting a 6.54 ERA in 147 1/3 major-league innings, and will try to make a go of it in Japan this season.
2009 A first-round pick eight years ago, the pro workload just never worked for Bootcheck, who failed to ever replicate the stuff from his college days at Auburn. In college, he showed a plus-plus fastball and good slider. As a pro, he merely had a good fastball and average slider that weren't good enough. Bootcheck made some progress with a move to the bullpen at Triple-A last year, so the Pirates are going to give him a shot at a relief role after signing him as a free agent.
2008 Here's a good example of a low-leverage reliever: not once all season was Bootcheck asked to protect a lead of four runs or fewer after the sixth inning. Of his 51 appearances, 35 saw him enter a game the Angels were losing. The only Angel reliever to post a lower Leverage score than Bootcheck's 0.69 was Hector Carrasco. For an 11th man, Bootcheck is pretty good, posting average rates. The big righty can do this job for a while.
2004 The Angels' #1 pick in 2000 has been a disappointment. Bootcheck hasn't had a good strikeout rate since his pro debut in the Cal League, in part because he never added the velocity he was projected to. That makes him a guy who doesn't miss enough bats to be successful. His ERA at Salt Lake is deceptive; more than 20% of the runs he allowed were unearned, so he was actually pitching at a 5.30 RA level or so. He's blocked in Anaheim, anyway, and may need to become a Rule 5 pick or a six-year free agent to get his next chance.
