DateQuestionAnswer
2014-10-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)The Royals come to you and say "bruh, this walk-up music we're using sucks. You like music, don't you? Choose the walk-up music for this whole lineup..." Nine players, nine songs. GO!
(Bruh from Club)
I did this in a mailbag bag in August. Forgive the jumbled up lineup:

1. Nori Aoki: "The Downfall of Us All" by A Day To Remember. This would just be an amusing way to start the first inning.

2. Omar Infante: "Mojo So Dope" by Kid Cudi. Omar is a laid-back fellow.

3. Salvador Perez: "Simon Says" by Pharoah Monche. The Godzilla introduction would be excellent.

4. Billy Butler: "Some Guys Have All The Luck" by Rod Stewart. A classic for the perpetually put-upon DH.

5. Alex Gordon: "Put On" by Young Jeezy. Either this, or "My Hero" by Foo Fighters. Or "The Best" by Tina Turner. I doubt Gordon would like the latter choices.

6. Josh Willingham: "Top Notch" by Manchester Orchestra. Non-descript rock music.

7. Lorenzo Cain: "Hold On, We're Going Home" by Drake. Smoother than LoCain flagging down a line drive in center.

8. Mike Moustakas: "You Wanted More" by Tonic. What? It's a good guitar riff.

9. Alcides Escobar: "Bowtie" by Outkast. I don't know. Feels like it fits. (Andy McCullough)
2013-03-20 11:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of Josh Willingham this year? Will he continue his success from last year or drop off severely? Is he worth giving up Lucas Giolito for in a long-term dynasty league?
(bdonenfeld from Laguna Beach, CA)
Career-highs almost across the board last year at the age of 33, with no meaningful changes in his metrics, in a great pitchers' park? Not a good bet to repeat. I'm not opposed to dealing Giolito if you think you can improve your chances of winning now by doing so, especially given the gap between what Giolito is now and what he may someday become, but try to aim higher than Willingham, at least to start out. (Cory Schwartz)
2013-03-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you like the job Terry Ryan is doing? With the farm chock full of high end talent how early do you see the Twins challenging for the division again?
(Jordan from MPLS)
There are a lot of high-ceiling players coming up through the pipeline, so I could definitely see the Twins making a run at the division by, say, 2015, especially if the Tigers' bats begin to decline at that point. It will be interesting to see if Ryan can add to that stockpile by moving short-term assets like Josh Willingham over the next 16 months. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-12-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)What else is going on with the Rays? Are the negotiations with Washington for Michael Morse and Danny Espinosa for Jeremy Hellickson still a possibility?
(Steve G. from Athens, OH)
They were as of last night, Steve G., so I think that something along those lines remains a possibility. Talks might heat up if/when the Nationals find common ground with Adam LaRoche.

There are a bunch of questions about the Rays, namely Hellickson and Shields, in the queue, so I'll use this as a sort of catchall answer. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman wrote this morning that with Zack Greinke representing the only elite free agent starting pitcher, and with the bidding on Greinke reportedly sky-high, the Rays are increasingly tempted to cash in on one of their starters. I don't think Tampa Bay will move Price, but at this point, either Hellickson or Shields seems a good bet to go. If nothing comes to fruition with the Nats, another possibility might be a deal with the Twins for Josh Willingham, though it's not yet clear if Minnesota is inclined to move him. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-11-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Question about Josh Willingham. Can we expect another season like he had in 2012, or is he a sell-high candidate for now? Thanks for the chat.
(T-Dog from Dirtnap, GA)
Sell if you can get every penny of his 2012 value in return, but he should still be good next year. He's always had great power, but the 35 HR are more a result of him staying healthy the best he ever has. 615 PA is a career-high for him, and banking on a repeat is asking for trouble. More likely you shave 50-100 PA off that and his HRs fall under 30 as a result. (Derek Carty)
2012-05-31 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hey, Jason. I'm just wondering who, in your opinion, are the five scrappiest players in the majors today. Please use statistics to back up your assertions.
(Noah from NY)
Mark Ellis: almost died, definitely scrappy
Adam Rosales: runs real fast everywhere he goes, super scrappy
Josh Willingham: plays baseball despite having two-foot-long legs, mad scrappy
Jose Altuve: like 5'2", so scrappy
Munenori Kawasaki: has made a career out of being an Ichiro-stalker, hella scrappy

Stats are not scrappy. (Jason Wojciechowski)
2012-05-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are you rooting for Josh Willingham to finish the year with seven WARP and the next-best Twin to have just one? What's the floor for the Twins?
(Lew from Los Angeles)
Absolutely. Nothing against the Twins, but I like Willingham as a player and that kind of trivial accomplishment is always fun.

I think the floor is where they are now. It's hard to envision them playing much worse. (R.J. Anderson)
2012-01-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who is more likely to earn their ~$7M salary in 2012, Delmon Young or Josh Willingham?
(PepeShady from St Paul)
Josh Willingham is more likely to be a $7 million player in 2012. Delmon Young could still turn into a $17 million player, but he disappears for long stretches. -- Dave (Best of BP with Ben and Dave)
2011-06-29 13:30:00 (link to chat)If the Pirates make moves, what are their biggest needs and who might be some realistic targets?
(Bill from Pittsburgh)
I think they need a bat (first base or right field) and one more starting pitcher. I think Carlos Pena would be a good target and Josh Willingham intrigues me. (John Perrotto)
2011-02-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Of Hideki Matsui, Josh Willingham, and David DeJesus, which of the A's new additions do you expect to adapt best to hitting in the Coliseum?
(Dave from Chicago)
The Coliseum isn't quite as unfriendly to lefties as it is to righties, so Matsui and DeJesus shouldn't see their value plummet. DeJesus should continue to be good for close to 10 triples.

I see that Larry Granillo already has two posts up, and R.J. Anderson has published three pieces--hasn't anyone told them that it's a marathon, not a sprint? Just kidding, guys. (Ben Lindbergh)
2010-12-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Word from Gammons is the Mets would eat about $10 million of Beltran's last year to move him to Boston, or take $10 million of bad contracts in return, like maybe Daisuke. What do you think?
(Colin Jaffe from New Jersey)
I just wrote about acquiring Magglio Ordonez or Josh Willingham for left field at Red Sox Beacon, but Beltran would be a fine fit as well. His defense is diminished, but he would be playing in left anyway, and it would open up a rotation spot for Boston to either (A) put Felix Doubront in or (B) acquire a starting pitcher to fill out their rotation. It also helps the Mets, as someone like Matsuzaka gives them starting pitcher depth at a good price--Dice-K makes $2M less than Oliver Perez, and is far, far superior--in a park and league where his stuff should play better than at Fenway. It would be win-win, if that's the case. (Marc Normandin)
2010-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will the Braves make a deal for Josh Willingham? If not, are there are any other realistic options to patch their hole in outfield offense?
(ss451 from Detroit)
I keep hearing Corey Hart is someone they are looking at--most of you know how I feel about Hart. I was so disappointed he tanked last year, but I'm elated he's back in it this year. It would be good to see him on the Braves as they try to recapture a division title for the first time in awhile. (Marc Normandin)
2010-01-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Mike Rizzo has revived the Nationals in the eyes of baseball insiders, apparently, but the team still has legions of prognosticators giving them nothing but dismissive scorn. Let's imagine that he tops off his active off-season with the moves we Nats fans are being teased with: the signing of Garland or Sheets or maybe Bedard, Orlando Hudson for 2B, and a trade of Josh Willingham for a young pitcher. Do we Nats fans have reason to hope that even 3rd place in the division would be at least plausible?
(HalfStreet from Fairfax VA)
Do you want the real answer or do you want the hopeful answer?

Look, there's a lot of variance in team win/loss records, so third place certainly doesn't have a zero probability. But I think it'd take a lot to make that happen--particularly a very bad season for the Braves or Marlins. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-01-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Seriously, what can the Nationals do this off-season to set themselves up to be an actual contender say, I don't know, 5 years from now? (Too optimistic?)?
(Skippy from Washington, D.C.)
Trade Josh Willingham for whatever young talent they can get. Make sure Jordan Zimmermann's recovery and rehab go really well. Retroactively not sign Ivan Rodriguez? (Tommy Bennett)
2009-11-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Two part question: 1. Can you speculate on the size of Lincecum's arbitration deal, should he and the Giants go that route? 2. Given that Timmy is going to get a lot of money whether he hits arbitration or not, will the Giants be able to add any offense this off-season? If you're the Giants GM, do you go trade/FA, and who do you target?
(Gregjitsu from Southern Cal)
We had an internal discussion about this the other day and it's tough to speculate about Lincecum's arb deal because no pitcher won Cy Young Awards in his 2nd and 3rd seasons. His career has been unprecedented to date. Ryan Howard previously set the record for a player in a similar situation, after winning ROTY and MVP in his first two years. I could see Lincecum easily breaking that, so the Giants may want to work out an extension as opposed to going year to year. Regardless of their choice, they could still sign someone like Nick Johnson or get Josh Willingham. (Eric Seidman)
2009-08-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)The Pirates have blown up their roster multiple times over the years, including this year. Mike Rizzo inherited the failed structure put together by Jim Bowden and MLB's neglect before that, yet says he is "building," not "rebuilding." The Pirates are headed for a record string of losing seasons, but that does not necessarily mean they were wrong this year. Still, I was glad that the Nats held onto Adam Dunn and Josh Willingham. Might Rizzo be onto something here? Could the Nats be Steven Strasburg and a couple of FA signings away from a real advance next year? Returning to the .500 record of 2005 would be the first goal.
(HalfStreet from Fairfax VA)
I think Rizzo is definitely on to something. I like the Nats' lineup and their young pitcher. Despite the terrible record, they really aren't that far from being respectable or better. Also, I can't tell you how happy I am that Rizzo got the job there. It would have been absolutely criminal if the Lerners turned to anyone else to be the GM after the way Rizzo quickly cleanup up the mess left behind by Jim Bowden. (John Perrotto)
2009-07-24 16:30:00 (link to chat)I was thinking Josh Willingham or Luke Scott. But I think they need the rotation guy more. Would Willingham help in the AL?
(lemppi from Ankeny, IA)
Willingham would help anywhere. The guy isn't an all-star but he, Scott, Spilborghs are all worthy of being pursued. (Eric Seidman)
2009-07-24 16:30:00 (link to chat)Eric realisticly which Nats is bye bye come 7/31? Is do nothing a good move for Rizzo? Thx
(Berndaddy from DC)
Adam Dunn needs to go. Josh Willingham needs to go. These guys will attract decent returns. I highly doubt anyone else they have would get a solid return. (Eric Seidman)
2009-07-30 14:00:00 (link to chat)Can the Tigers make a legit move on Josh Willingham and/or Jarrod Washburn? Or will they get what's behind Door #3 and end up w/Cody Ross? Thanks.
(lemppi from Ankeny, IA)
I think it's door No. 3. They don't really have much in the way of prospects that excited other teams. However, I don't think Cody Ross is a bad consolation prize. He's a pretty underrated player in my book. (John Perrotto)
2009-04-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Am I crazy or are the Nationals pretty close to being a contender? Their lineup isn't bad, with a nice middle of Milledge/Zimmerman/Dukes/Dunn. With J. Zimmermann, Strasburg and maybe a FA starter signing, they'll have a good core of talent.
(Tex Premium Lager from Hoboken, NJ)
They've got the makings of a promising nucelus, but they've got to undo the damage wrought by Ol' Leatherpants. First and foremost, they need to turn that absurd stockpile of outfielders into some other usable parts around the diamond by trading two players from the Nick Johnson/Josh Willingham/Austin Kearns group. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-04-10 16:30:00 (link to chat)Austin Kearns over Elijah Dukes or Josh Willingham? What is Manny Acta/Mike Rizzo thinking?
(dwiest12 from NoVA)
I think Marc hit the nail on the head today in his piece; economic factors and a need to see if there really is a sucker born every minute, and how relentless population pressures might necessarily put one in a GM job somewhere, so that said sucker might go all Bowden on the notion of employing Austin Kearns... it's not the best gig for a busker on the make, but you can't blame the Nats for trying. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-11-03 13:30:00 (link to chat)Christina! Thanks, as always, for the chat. How much value should teams place on the defense of their backup catcher? Would it create valuable roster flexibility for a team to have a guy like Ryan Garko or Jayson Werth or Josh Willingham catch one day a week? Or is that just re-arranging the deck chairs? Iím also wondering if this would preserve some of the positional value of prospects who just donít look like they can catch every day, such as Jeff Clement or Hank Conger.
(Rob from Alaska)
You're talking to somebody who fell in love with everything about catchers back when you had backups like Johnny Wockenfuss and Bill Schroeder, guys who really weren't much behind the plate, but gave you something in the lineup, and who hit well enough to have value DHing or playing some first base. (Naturally, that makes me a Chris Coste fan. Jim Leyritz too, for that matter.) While a guy as big and as fragile as Werth would give me pause, I think it makes plenty of sense in Garko's case. I wonder about Willingham, but in part that's because I sort of fancy the notion that he could grow up to be the next Brian Downing. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-11-03 13:30:00 (link to chat) Who do you see playing first for the Marlins now?
(tcogle from las Vegas)
I sort of ran through this yesterday, but in short, the Fish have a multiplicity of options because they have prospects who can hit a little in Logan Morrison and Gaby Sanchez, defensively-challenged young veterans like Josh Willingham and Jorge Cantu, and a one-for-one replacement for Jacobs in Dallas McPherson, at least in terms of skill sets. It's a choice the Marlins only have to make now if they decide to add a hitter in the outfield or a third baseman who can pick it; otherwise, they really can go into spring training and have some fun sorting it out. I'd probably do the pitching staff the favor of trying Cantu, and mix in some McPherson. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-05-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Time to cut bait on Josh Willingham?
(Emmitt from Buffalo)
No, I'd actually be buying low. Non-structural back issues have a way of scaring a player into fitness. Ivan Rodriguez comes to mind.
(Blankets of Night by Hammock. Man, I really, really like Hammock.) (Will Carroll)
