2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat)Better trade target for the Brewers 1B issue...LoMo, Davis, or Smoak? Personally, I'm hoping they just re-sign Hart.
(Andy from Milwaukee)
Hi Andy:

Yes, I think Corey Hart is the best option for Milwaukee. But of those three hitters you mentioned, I think I'd roll the dice on Ike Davis. All three are risky, but I think Davis has the most upside. This, of course, assumes cost is no object. One of the reasons the Mets might move Davis is that he's entering his arbitration years and is about to get expensive. (Mike Gianella)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)Just offered a rebuilding team Minor (cheap salary), Greg Polanco, Josh Bell and my 1st rd in next year's minors draft for Corey Hart, Grandal (cheap salary) and McCarthy in a dynasty league. Seem like a fair deal? I liked McCarthy coming into 2013, but he hasn't looked good, any concern there?
(Tom from Boston)
Not a ton of concern with McCarthy, but I don't love that deal for you. Minor has been very solid and Polanco/Bell are both legit prospects. I also worry about Corey Hart as he ages. But most importantly, we ALL stand with Boston. (Bret Sayre)
2012-11-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)I am longing to know what is going to happen the NL Central's CF positions. As I write today from the west coast, I feel confident about the NL West Center fielders, but there seems to be turmoil in the Midwest. Is Carlos Gomez going to be etched out by Josh Hamilton? Is Stubbs going to swiped away by the younger Hamiltion? Only McCutch is safe, but is he? How about moving that old man into the pastures of LF for that young fielding stud Marte? Can you enlighten me? One you takes turbulent path to Enlightenment
(allangustafson from San Diego )
If Hamilton were to sign in Milwaukee -- which I'd bet against strongly -- my bet is he'd play a corner and the Brewers would either move Braun to first base and trade Corey Hart or trade Aoki.
Billy Hamilton is not ready for the big leagues at the plate and certainly not in center field, but it appears the Reds' top goal is to land a center fielder and leadoff hitter -- Bourn? Span? Victorino? As for Pittsburgh, McCutchen is a better centerfielder than Marte, so there is no change to be made there. (Jason A. Churchill)
2012-07-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)If you were the Brewers' GM, what would you be looking to do at the deadline?
(adambennett from The Batcave)
The Crew is feeling the hangover from last year’s playoff push, and too many injuries makes it clear they won’t be in the playoff picture. So I’d sell, just like they’re getting ready to do now. Zack Greinke is a great trading chip, and I’d move Aramis Ramirez and maybe Corey Hart if I had to—if anyone wants Randy Wolf or K-Rod, I’d trade them as well. Also not a Carlos Gomez fan; I’ve been hoping they’d dump him for years. They need to restock their farm system with some position prospects to make up for last year’s fire sale and give a look to Logan Schafer and Taylor Green. They can be competitive again once the team’s healthy, so there’s no need to dump everyone, but they need to face reality and get ready for 2013. (Michael Street)
2012-04-12 14:00:00 (link to chat)I own Cespedes in my league and received a trade offer. Offer is for Corey Hart and Eric Hosmer. I figure that yes I should take this deal, but Cespedes could be someone who could win me the league if he can walk like he has been the past two games. Thoughts?
(SpaceJohnson from Costa Rica)
You get both for Cespedes? In a 5x5 league? Yeah, take it and don't look back. (Derek Carty)
2012-01-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Corey Hart this season
(moehk21 from NYC)
Same old, same old. The team has said he'll stay in the OF this season (there was talk of his shifting to 1B to replace Prince), and I think another 25-30 HR, .280 season is in the making. (Derek Carty)
2011-10-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Shouldn't RR just have played Kotsay in RF for the struggling Corey Hart if he really wanted Kotsay's bat in the line-up. If RR is content making decisions on small sample sizes, wouldn't that have been the better play where his defense could have been hidden better? Especially with Hart's D and speed not what it once was.
(ryans from Milwaukee)
You're questioning the logic of a man who has been in love with Mark Kotsay all season. That's not easy.

I agree with you and think that would have been a perfectly valid way to go. I'm not sure who would have slid into the leadoff spot there - Weeks should be the answer, but it would probably have been Gomez or Morgan. My guess, like I said before, is that Roenicke wanted to minimize the waves he caused in the lineup. He can take Gomez and Morgan out of a game any time he wants since they've been platooned all year. Removing Hart from the lineup would be a big deal in the clubhouse, and that's not something he's willing to do right now (though he has started Hairston over McGehee all October, so at least he's done that). (Larry Granillo)
2010-12-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)So match up MIL and CIN: pitching for a LF? A younger 3b or C?
(Cris E from St Paul, MN)
Interesting. I wonder what the Reds would give up for Corey Hart? Hart might actually be able to earn his contract playing in the GAB, since the concern is that his home run power suddenly morphs back into flyball outs. Would they trade one of their better starters for that? Maybe. But like I say, I'm really bad at this game. (Ken Funck)
2010-09-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)What are you drinking? What are you wearing? Most importantly, does Ichiro have the best RF arm of active players, cause Greg Golson made one heck of a throw to end the Rays/Yanks game last night.
(dianagramr from NYC)
Drinking lots of water and wearing very tight under armor as I recover from the surgery I had on Monday. Greg Golson is a former Phillies nothing prospect who was shipped to Texas for fellow nothing prospect John Mayberry, Jr. When my father and I heard Golson's name mentioned on Quick Pitch this morning we instantly double-took (double-taked?) and stared in disbelief. Ichiro! still has a tremendous arm. Francouer, for all his faults, has a strong arm, too. I don't know who has the best, but I do know that Corey Hart and Hunter Pence have the strangest throws. (Eric Seidman)
2010-09-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)You are the GM of the Brewers, obviously you need pitching to go behind Gallardo and Wolf (who hasn't been bad the second half)...Who do you get? And I don't think you can get much for Fielder (may be 1 starter)...what do you do...Trade Gamel and Lawrie for more? Keep Fielder and just halfway upgrade? Trade Corey Hart?
(JT from MKE)
I would rather trade Prince Fielder at this point. In the years when his power isn't all-world, his lack of defense cuts into his value big time. The optimism of the offseason will cause someone to give up what the Brewers need if they want to shop him, much more so than during the regular season when they were listening to teams.

Chris Narveson has looked pretty good as of late, though I'm not sure how sustainable it is. Getting Manny Parra out of the rotation is probably for the best. They may want to go for some league average guys who can strike out some batters, because that defense still isn't any good. (Marc Normandin)
2010-08-02 13:30:00 (link to chat)After a loathsome couple of years, Corey Hart's power bounces back and the Brewers sign him to a three-year deal. Smart move for Milwaukee, or too soon to be sure Hart's resurgence is sustainable?
(EG from A Remote, Undesirable Villa)
It's a smart move if the Brewers are thinking in terms of peddling Hart while his value is high, so that they don't pay the back end of the deal. It might also be a smart move if they're anticipating moving Hart to first base after Prince Fielder waddles elsewhere. It makes for an interesting position as far as being able to move one or the other, and seeing which better matches a swap partner's needs--three years of Hart, or a year with Prince. As long as the Brewers are willing to entertain offers for both and trade one, they'll be in a position to open up a slot in the outfield for Weeks. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will the Braves make a deal for Josh Willingham? If not, are there are any other realistic options to patch their hole in outfield offense?
(ss451 from Detroit)
I keep hearing Corey Hart is someone they are looking at--most of you know how I feel about Hart. I was so disappointed he tanked last year, but I'm elated he's back in it this year. It would be good to see him on the Braves as they try to recapture a division title for the first time in awhile. (Marc Normandin)
2010-03-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)There are a handful of players who've discovered vision problems this offseason or spring and are getting glasses (Nate McLouth, Corey Hart, Randy Wells, probably others). How do medical staffs miss this for so long, and how much effect is getting their vision corrected likely to have on their performance this year?
(wilykat from San Francisco)
This one is fascinating to me. There's usually more to it than you see, but there's also changes. We're all aging, even McLouth, and our bodies change. I've certainly paid a lot more attention to my eyes lately! Suffice it to say that this is almost always on the player, not the med staff. (Will Carroll)
2010-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Mark- BP is my bible and I took your rankings last year as the Gospel of Marc. After throwing away a keeper slot on Lastings Milledge and trading for David Wright, I picked Corey Hart, Elijah Dukes, Nalasco, Matt Weiters and several other disappointments. Needless to say it wasn't a great season for me. Why should I be more believing this year? Help me restore my faith. Thanks, Dan ps feel free to answer this privately if you felt it came across too critical.
(dandaman from Sea Cliff)
Nope, this is exactly why I did that review of my rankings, because I felt like you. It seemed like I drafted every major mistake I made, so I wanted to learn from my mistakes to keep it from happening again. I think the 2010 rankings will be better for it. (Marc Normandin)
2009-06-05 15:30:00 (link to chat)What do you expect from Berkman the rest of the way? What about other slow starters, like Hart and Atkins?
(Mike from Cleveland)
The appeal of Corey Hart continues to escape me... the guy racks up a lot of counting stats because he had so many plate appearances. Even last year, when he had 45 2B, 6 3B, and 20 HR, he only managed a .459 SLG, which is something you might expect out of a guy like Victorino. Hart isn't bad, but he isn't an all star and you can color me unimpressed. As for Berkman, I can certainly see him finishing with a line akin to his numbers in 2007. (Eric Seidman)
2009-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Does Jody Gerut in Milwaukee mean less ABs for a struggling Corey Hart? Or is this just a depth move?
(Chris from Austin, MN)
Well, I know Chris Duffy was on the roster, so this is better. I could see Hart losing some time. The Brewers have been so very right-handed the last few years; adding Gamel and Gerut would help that a lot. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-12-23 14:00:00 (link to chat)Christina, What do the Brewers do to patch up the pitching staff? Is it worth trading Corey Hart/J.J Hardy for a young starter?
(cclark131313 from Milwaukee)
I have a lot of sympathy for Doug Melvin's lot, but he certainly seems flat-footed after making his play for Sabathia and coming up short. Hart's season really wasn't very special once you recognize it was all counting stats in a massive amount of playing time, and most GMs see that; he may not fetch anything more than a veteran rental. Hardy's very good, but the problem is that however good Escobar is, that's a bit of taking money out of one pocket and putting it into the other--dealing Hardy hurts a bid. Ideally, you want to find somebody who will deal a starter in a package that has Escobar in it, but there aren't that many quality starters available to swing this sort of deal for. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-10-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)What do you expect from Corey Hart going forward? Is he more first half, second half, or somewhere in between?
(Jon from SF)
More first half. I have to say that he's been disappointing, and from a distance I can't say exactly why. Seems like a place where there's some advantage to being closer to it. He has a lot of raw skills, but isn't really getting better. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-09-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)"My questions about Markakis always came down to his power ceiling, but it's not like he's a slap hitter. .300 hitter with 100 walks and 25 home runs? That's pretty damn special." Shouldn't this be Corey Hart (albeit with 40 less walks and 5-7 more home runs)?
(Dennis from Chicago)
Actually, it's the same number of home runs and about 70 fewer walks. MASSIVE difference. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-09-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)What light came on that allowed me to start hitting like I have been? Where was this at Stanford? And how does a guy who is 6'6", 250 have the speed and athleticism to be a decent outfield glove and steal bases? Maybe I grow up to be Corey Hart with an extra 30 pounds of muscle?
(Michael Taylor from Clearwater, FL)
As far as where this was at Stanford, ask Stanford. Scouts talk a lot about "the Stanford swing" which is single-place and designed for contact and not a one-size-fits-all solution. Taylor is now away from that and good things are happening for him. As far as how a 6-6, 250 guy has that kind of athleticism -- you just need to see him. He's not some massive hulking guy one-dimensional stiff, he's ripped like a football player. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-09-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)You just wrote that I remain a third baseman in name only. You don't buy that I'm continuing to improve, having reduced my error total from 53 last year to 32 this year? As a hitter, will I be more Ryan Braun or Corey Hart?
(Mat Gamel from Milwaukee)
I'll buy that you improved, but it's not enough and there's a ceiling here. Give me two years at shortstop and I'd come leaps and bounds ability wise, but still be nowhere near at a professional level. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-07-29 16:00:00 (link to chat)Looks like that wrist-injury may have helped breath new life into Soriano's legs. The guy looks as close to his old self as the Cubs have seen since his CF patrolling days of early '07.
(JMan from Chicago)
He looked very unsure of himself on the play where Fielder chugged home and Lee cut off the ball and got Corey Hart trying to get to 3B. I don't think he's 100% OR the Cubs are saying "jog." (Will Carroll)
2008-05-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)Corey Hart... The Andy Van Slyke of the Fielder/Braun/Hart trio? Minus the defense and left handedness I guess... I was going more for the underappreciatedness of it.
(strupp from Madison)
Forgive me, I needed a long giggle break. Andy Van Slyke, underappreciated? Would that be on the planet without beatwriters? (Now *there's* a movie that would make people forget "Mars Needs Women.") Anyway, I think it's obvious that Hart's the item that fills your bill. I'd love to see him get a serious shot in center, but I really don't think it's ever going to happen. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-04-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)Corey Hart: buy or sell?
(dootstev from Michigan)
He needs to smooth out his swing again, he's hitting the ball on the ground too much. I say hold on to him and wait for the loft to come back to his swing. He's getting on base and stealing for you at the moment anyways, the power will come back. (Marc Normandin)
2008-03-11 12:00:00 (link to chat)Corey Hart was +17 runs in right field last year. He can take over center in 2009 when Cameron is gone and I'm sure Braun can play right field, he'a got the arm and the athleticism for the outfield. That leaves left field open for LaPorta in 2009, where he'll be at least average. I'm not crazy am I?
(denny187 from WI)
I don't at all believe that Corey Hart can play center field on an everyday basis. It's important to not think that a player's defensive statistics automatically translate that way. Some will, some won't, and Hart--who I love as a player--seems as if he'd be stretched in center.

And if you want to put him between LaPorta and Braun, I can only assume he did something really mean to you in high school.

Lightning round. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-03-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)are you a corey hart fan? and what do you see out of liriano this year?
(jphan44 from medford,MA)
I think we should start the Corey Hart Fan Club right now. Someone come up with a catchy title for the club please.

I'm a huge Corey Hart fan, hence my ranking him #3 amongst all outfielders for this year's draft. If you're including Braun as an outfielder, that makes him #4, but the Brewers have to be pretty pleased with their new outfield situation after putting up with Menchkins for a year plus.

Franky Liriano is tough, because you don't know how long it will take for his command to come back. He should do fine for himself, although I wouldn't expect 2006 to happen again immediately. (Marc Normandin)
2008-03-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)re: Corey Hart fan club name .... easy "Sunglasses in Right" As for Moving Pictures .... best RUSH album ever! Fantasy question: Is there any scenario in which Johan goes first in a mixed league, non-keeper snake draft?
(dianagramr from NYC)
Sunglasses in Right, eh? Any others folks? I'm counting on you here. If Johan goes first, it's your job to make that fantasy owner pay for it the rest of the draft. We had someone pick Joe Mauer third last year overall, and he hasn't lived it down yet. (Marc Normandin)

2010-07-13 16:30:00All-Star GameDerek (Atlanta): Do you see the Brewers parting ways with Corey Hart after his oustanding first half?

What are the Braves going to trade away? I'm actually writing about this for tomorrow -- Three teams that don't have a system that allowed for much trading. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-10-02 11:00:00Thursday Playoff GamesAs Corey Hart takes one for the team...

"Mike (Jax, FL): Corey Hart has been more like Jay Payton lately then anyone I can recall. He's awful against any slider pitcher and seems lost since mid August. Am I crazy to want him moved down in the order?"

As bad as Hart has been over the last several weeks, I'd never saddle a player with a Payton comparison. I saw Payton make mistakes as a Met worthy of a stern lecture from a Little League coach, such as the time he ran from between second and third base back to first without touching second on a fly ball that was caught and was called out. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-10-02 11:00:00Thursday Playoff GamesA possibly massive play to end the inning as Corey Hart swings at the first pitch to ground into a 1-2-3 inning-ending double play. I'd send him to instructs for that. (Kevin Goldstein)
