2013 A significant velocity decline led to a severe performance decline for Adams in 2012. His ERA, WHIP, and walk rate skyrocketed while his strikeout rate plummeted. A possible cause emerged during the offseason when Adams admitted to dealing with thoracic outlet syndrome for almost the entire season. He underwent surgery for the condition in October. The Phillies obviously aren't too worried about his recovery: He made his health problem public at the press conference announcing his two-year, $12 million dollar contract with Philadelphia. Coming into 2012, the only reliever better than Adams from 2008-11 was Mariano Rivera. With a healthy Adams, Antonio Bastardo, and Jonathan Papelbon, the Phillies have a dynamic late-inning trio.
2012 Acquired at the 2011 trade deadline from San Diego for minor league command/control wizards Robbie Erlin and Joe Wieland, Adams quickly helped to stabilize the back end of the Rangers’ bullpen, becoming the main setup man for closer Neftali Feliz. With Feliz moving into the rotation and newcomer Joe Nathan tasked with pitching the ninth, the Rangers will once again look to the 33-year-old righty to provide stability in a late-innings role. With a filthy cutter, thrown with deception and angle thanks to his 6-foot-5 body and long arms, Adams has the necessary nastiness to slide into the spotlight role of closer, should the situation warrant his services.
2011 Over the last three seasons, Adams has held right-handers to a 519 OPS and lefties to a 511 mark. He has struck out 10.2 per nine with a K/BB ratio of almost four over that stretch. This isn't some Petco mirage: Adams has a 2.17 career road ERA with 81 whiffs in 78 2/3 innings for the Friars. His wide assortment of pitches—Adams owns a power slider, a four-seam fastball that averages over 93 mph and a two-seamer that gets ground balls—keeps hitters guessing, even more so because he can command all three. Adams, who was third among non-closers in WXRL in 2010, must get through four years of arbitration before qualifying for free agency (the first of which came over the winter), so even if Heath Bell is dealt in July (or leaves as a free agent after the season) the Padres can count on continuing to have one of the preeminent relievers in the game as their closer for at least three seasons to come.
2010 The one-time Brewers' closer of the future has put his career back on track during his two seasons with the Padres, even despite having arthroscopic shoulder surgery following the 2008 season. Adams has a power sinker that induces ground balls but he can also get a strikeout when he needs it with his four-seam fastball. Adams has resurrected his career to become a quality set-up man, so he could factor into the closer situation if the Padres do end up trading Heath Bell.
2009 Mike Adams had already been away from baseball for over a year thanks to surgery on his right knee, this coming after a 2006 that saw him bounce through four different organizations. He's back in the same pickle jar, as shoulder surgery will keep him out until at least the All-Star break. There will be more reason to miss him this time; he finished second on the Padres in WXRL, striking out 10.2 per nine in the process, and he was particularly good against righties.
2007 After flitting through three organizations last summer, Mike Adams might seem like the ultimate roster hot potato, but anyone with his kind of mid-90s heat will elicit interest.
2005 After spending a significant portion of his college career playing basketball at Texas A&M-Kingville, the Brewers signed him in 2001 as an undrafted free agent. Since then, Adams has used a 90-93 MPH fastball and a solid slider to move through the system with few problems, before becoming one of Milwaukee's better relievers during the second half of 2004. After the trades of Dan Kolb and Luis Vizcaino, Adams is penciled in as the Brewers closer for 2005. His minor league track record backs up his stuff, and Adams has a chance to be a very good reliever.
