DateQuestionAnswer
2011-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you care to expand on your worries over the Tigers' future....weak farm? Iffy everyday lineup? The rotation is locked up for a long while. Thank you.
(lemppi from Iowa)
Weak farm; Kevin had them 27th in the organizational rankings this spring. They'll have some financial flexibility after this season, and while Mike Ilich isn't afraid to spend, they absolutely have to avoid the entanglements that produced so much dead salary over the past few years. Carlos Guillen, Magglio Ordonez, Dontrelle Willis, Nate Robertson, Jeremy Bonderman - I can't think of a team that had so many contracts of $10 million per year blow up on them all at once. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the answer. Bad contracts for Dombrowski? Dontrelle Willis 3-yr/$29M. Nate Robertson 3-yr/$21M. Jeremy Bonderman 4-yr/$38M (I did favor that deal though at the time). Pudge R a $13M option picked up for no apparent reason. Guillen as you noted. He had some real clunkers. I like the guy on the whole...but he created some of the problems they face currently...it wasn't all bad luck.
(lemppi from Ankeny, IA)
Yes, those were questionable, except for Bonderman. I would still argue that overall he deserves a solid grade. I'll say something else in his favor: he hasn't blown any money on Chan-Ho Park, or players like Chan Ho. He signed Brandon Lyon for one year, then let Ed Wade sign him for three. Now, the bullpen has been a weakness for the Tigers at times, so you can argue about this, but I would say it's better to stay cheap than to take blind shots in the dark. (Steven Goldman)
2010-02-17 16:00:00 (link to chat)Will Dontrelle Willis make it through spring training for Detroit? Seems there might be a difference in opinions on his "anxiety" issues. Detroit doesn't need this in a "young" locker room.
(DennisDubay from Decatur)
What's with the quotes? I think Dontrelle has long odds to make the roster, but who isn't rooting for him? (Tommy Bennett)
2009-10-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the Holliday/DiRosa answer; now a followup. Will Khalil Greene ever be able to find major-league employment again? What kind of team might/should be willing to take a chance on him after this year?
(Bill from New Mexico)
Historically, baseball hasn't been kind to the men who struggle with their own demons, whether we want to talk about Alex Johnson or Dontrelle Willis or Tony Horton. Will someone take a chance on Greene? Yes, somebody will; shortstops who hit for power don't grow on trees, and somebody's going to want to see if he can do one or both things ever again. But you can bet that whatever offers he gets this winter are going to be after a few interviews and evaluations, and will probably involve some unique provisions. My hope is that he beats this, and simply plays. Well or badly, I hope he simply gets to play, and leave on his own terms at some distant point in the future. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)At roughly 40 games in, could you handicap the AL Central? Can the Tigers still go the distance w/o much from Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Guillen, and Placido Polanco?
(lemppi from Ankeny, IA)
The best single unit is the Tigers' rotation, which has been very good. I don't think Dontrelle Willis is the solution in the #5 slot--I'd rather see Bonderman replace him than Galarraga--but Verlander/Jackson (11 walks!)/Porcello is a great way to start. They need some bullpen help and maybe a lefty bat, although Larish could fill that role. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-05-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Will, I've recently noticed the publicity of a couple players with anxiety disorders (i.e. Zack Greinke, and Dontrelle Willis), the fact of the matter is there are millions of Americans with anxiety disorders. Do you think this recent "coming out" of players with anxiety issues will spark more and more players to voice the same concerns about their mental state? I just think its interesting because mental health problems can be as debilitating as physical health problems but are almost never mentioned in the media involving MLB; I doubt that is because these problems are not occurring among professional baseball players.
(SnakeDoctor18 from New York)
As someone who dealt with panic attacks for years (and wouldn't have written this column without them), I understand what they're going through. I'm curious because what Willis has said publicly has been opposed to the diagnosis. Is that him denying it and "manning up?" or is the team finding some way to stash him on the DL? (I think it's more the former.) I wish more players would be open with these types of conditions, depression, ADHD, but I also understand why they're not. (Will Carroll)
2009-02-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dave Dombrowski has a big payroll with several old guys on pricey deals. Most of those old guys look rather un-marketable. His local economic outlook is far worse then the national outlook in most respects. How would you proceed in this environment if you were him given the situation and possible dip (cratering?) in attendance?
(lemppi from Ankeny, IA)
Are we giving up on the Tigers already? PECOTA has them finishing 2nd in a weak AL Central, so they should hopefully at least reap the rewards of an exciting race for the Seligpennant.

Anyway, those contracts are a sunk cost, and so long as people are still buying pizza Mike Ilitch can cover them, so Dombrowski shouldn't let it affect his decision-making one bit. How to get Michiganders to spend their last few nickels to go see Dontrelle Willis pitch if he can't come within ten feet of the backstop I admit is a problem, but maybe they could consider lowering the ticket prices that they doubled when they moved into Comerica. Or play a couple of games a year at the remains of Tiger Stadium to attract history buffs. (Neil deMause)
2008-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is it just me, or are the Tigers completely botching this whole Dontrelle Willis knee recovery?
(Eddie from Ohio)
I'm not really seeing what they could do differently. Sending him all the way back to Single-A seems extreme, but would he be better served to be in Toledo? What I'm not sure of (and hope the Tigers are) is the chicken & egg nature of the knee problem and his complete loss of control. (Will Carroll)
2008-04-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)other pitchers availible are, Dontrelle Willis,Ted Lilly,Francisco Liriano, Tom Gorzelanny, Ubaldo Jiménez, Jarrod Washburn, Jeff Suppan, Jamie Moyer, Shawn Chacón, Shawn Hill, Kevin Millwood, Andy Sonnanstine, See anything in there you like better the Hughes?
(dogtothedog from Toronto)
Sonnanstine's intriguing. Lilly's using the wrong pitches, from what I can tell. I like Gorzelanny, but I'd like him more if he'd stop hurting my own team's numbers. I'd take Sonnanstine for now, honestly. Phil Hughes is all kinds of messed up at the moment.

Sonnanstine's using a cutter more this year, probably to offset the number of fastballs in the zone hitters knew were coming in '07. It hasn't helped his strikeout rate, but he's lowered the number of base hits he's allowing. That's a tough crowd of FA, I'll give you that... (Marc Normandin)
2008-02-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Back of the rotation guys for this year John Danks, Micah Owings, or Dontrelle Willis? How about in the future? Possible keeper worthy?
(jake1m from Gold Country, CA)
Wow, that's downright Pollock-like in its spread. I'm with the school of thought that Willis will profit from getting out from behind a lousy Marlins defense. I really, really like what Owings could turn into, but part of that is an understandable fascination with the man's hitting. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-01-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)John, which is likely more important for Detroit this year: Miguel Cabrera's added offense over Brandon Inge, or Dontrelle Willis successfully adjusting to the AL and posting numbers at least similar to '06 (if not better). Thanks for your thoughts.
(Yoop from Ankeny, IA)
Cabrera's offense. No slight to Willis, who could really help the Tigers, but Cabrera is one of the game's premier hitters. He makes an already-dangerous lineup downright scary. (John Perrotto)

DateRoundtable NameComment
2009-10-28 17:00:002009 WS Game OneFor all the talk about the lack of African-Americans playing the game, the World Series has been a good stage over the last couple years: Rollins again this year, Sabathia, Crawford, Dontrelle Willis a couple years back. That's good for ball. (Will Carroll)

PITCHf/x Pitcher Profile

A Collaboration between BrooksBaseball.net and Baseball Prospectus - Pitch classifications provided by Pitch Info LLC

In 2011, he relied primarily on his Fourseam Fastball (89mph) and Sinker (88mph), also mixing in a Slider (82mph), Curve (77mph) and Change (80mph).
