BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 Randy Flores has spent parts of 10 seasons in the major leagues, and the little lefty reliever will likely get a chance to celebrate 11 happy years of LOOGY-dom this season.
2010 Former La Russa plaything Randy Flores provided 12 mediocre innings spread over 27 games, so the Rockies decided to renew his LOOGY license.
2009 The Cardinals gave Flores a two-year, $1.8 million contract to buy out two years of arbitration despite an ugly 2006 season. Pandering to La Russa's tactical proclivities with this particular situational lefty looked bad at the time, but at least the Cardinals could point to Flores's success as a LOOGY for justification—over the previous three years, he had held his own kind to a .222/.297/.341 line in 209 PA. But from 2007-08, he turned into a LNOGY, as lefties hit .322/.394/.473 against him in 170 PA. Last year was particularly miserable, as he pitched through arm soreness before undergoing shoulder surgery after his MRI showed a cyst and a fraying labrum. Deciding enough was enough, the Cardinals non-tendered him in December.
2008 The overall stat lines for relief pitchers in the era of specialization don't mean much. Here are the important numbers for Flores, one of the Cards' two LOOGYs: .385 OBP allowed to lefties (mostly because he struck out just 14 percent of them) and .343 OBP by the first batter he faced. Oh, and he allowed a whopping 19 of 34 inherited runners to score. He had a lousy year, much worse than his ERA and ratios indicate. He's just not dominant enough to be a specialist.
2007 Flores continues to pitch often, if briefly. Among relievers with at least 40 appearances last year, he had the fifth-lowest innings-per-game average behind only fellow LOOGies Mike Myers, Scott Sauerbeck, George Sherrill, and Brian Shouse. His teammate, Tyler Johnson, came in sixth, so that`s two roster spots eating less than nine games worth of innings. Right-handed batters really battered him last year (.329/.416/.556), and while he handled lefthanders well enough (.258/.337/.355), it was nothing like his performance in 2005. He`s fungible, and with Ricky Rincon due back, up against the wall.
2006 Yet another LaRussa reliever who averages less than an inning per outing. Flores got a shot to demonstrate that he`s an effective situational lefty, and he took advantage of it, holding lefties to a .173 average. However, his low ERA disguises both his lack of success at stranding inherited baserunners and how successful subsequent pitchers were at stranding his leftovers. During the offseason, he underwent minor surgery to remove bone spurs from his pitching elbow, but he should be back in his familiar role in 2006, and probably for years to come.
