2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)It's almost awards season! Who are your MLB picks for the following: 1. Best hair (head) 2. Best hair (facial) 3. Best customer of Old Country Buffet 4. Manager most likely to have read any of the Twilight books. 5. AL MVP.
(Nick from Michigan)
1) Verducci 2)Motte 3)Billy Butler 4) Jim Tracy 5) Miguel Cabrera (oh...sheeeeet) (Jason Parks)
2012-09-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Why do owners/GM's repeatedly recycle established boneheads like myself, Jim Tracy, Clint Hurdle, Bobby Valentine, et. al., instead of giving the Venturas & Mathenys of the world more opportunities? Thanks, Dan!
(Scrap Iron from On queue for Hurdle's job)
Scrap Iron, that's a good question. Sometimes unheralded or inexperienced people fail to get opportunities because the scope of the GM or owner is not broad enough to make their candidate list. I have found that some really terrific people are there if you are thinking about candidates ALL of the time. There is nothing wrong with a guy who's done it before, because there are different reasons why people get fired in one situation and thrive in another. Robin Ventura was a great hire by the White Sox, and his demeanor during last night's post-game presser was amazing for a first-timer, in fact it was text book. Some people are born to lead, and you have to keep your eyes open for them all the time. It is such a tough job, but there are so many different ways to do it. (Dan Evans)
2012-04-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Sabean and Bochy dealing with Belt, Dusty Baker with pitchers, Jim Tracy, with, well, baseball in general....Since hate is the theme of the day, which GM and/or manager makes your blood boil the most these days?
(Nick Stone from New York, NY)
Sabean's certainly high on the list, but because I care more about what the Dodgers do than what the Giants do, it's Ned Colletti who's more likely to drive me into a chair-throwing rage. (Jay Jaffe)
2012-04-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)How much will the Rockies limit their pitchers this year? How will pitch in September? They have the young, Juan Nicasio, Drew Pomeranz, and Chacin. They have the old in Jamie Moyer.
(will.I.ain't from roaming)
I'd bet that Pomeranz, who threw about 120 innings across four levels last year, will be capped around 150-160, and Nicasio maybe just a bit higher. I'd be surprised if Moyer makes it through the year, at least in the rotation, and I think it's important to remember that they have Jorge de la Rosa coming back from Tommy John surgery at some point this summer.

I don't think it's going to matter particularly how well they pitch in September, as they won't be contending. Their offense is mediocre even in a division that defines offensive mediocrity, and Jim Tracy is more hindrance than help when it comes to running a bullpen. (Jay Jaffe)
2012-01-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Dexter Fowler stay in the majors and in Jim Tracy's starting lineup all year long? Do you see him as a breakout candidate this year?
(Peter from Westtown)
It's hard to say if he stays in it all year, since they seem to keep him on a short leash, and Charlie Blackmon will still be kicking around in the background, but I do think Fowler has what it takes to hit .260 or .270 while OBPing .350 and stealing 30 bases. Whether that will be enough for the Rockies to keep him in centerfield and leading off, we'll have to see, but I'd like to that he will play well and be kept around. (Derek Carty)
2011-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)You are given the keys to the 2012 Dodgers ... who do you appoint as manager and GM?
(dianagramr from NYC)
GM: If I couldn't poach Kevin Towers from Arizona, I'd give Kim Ng a chance to test her mettle, though I'd be tempted to give Dan Evans another shot as well. He got a raw deal in L.A.

Manager: If I'm staying within the organization, I'd like to see what Tim Wallach can do. I might be tempted to see what Bobby Valentine could do in that job.

I'd also consider bringing back Jim Tracy... Just kidding. I'd blow up Dodger Stadium, salt the earth and move the team to Orange County before letting that happen. (Jay Jaffe)
2011-06-29 13:30:00 (link to chat)Are you the true identity of Not Jim Tracy?
(Mickey from Gotta know . . . )
Well, Mick, you know it's interesting you suggest that I might indeed play a significant role in the evolution of the role known as Not Jim Tracy but I'd henceforth have no further comment on the subject to which you refer. (John Perrotto)
2011-06-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)What's the majority view among those sebermetrically inclined of Dan O'Dowd's tenure at the Rockies? After they started building from within, they seemed to understand that counting stats don't tell us that much, but recently I've had the feeling that the reason the Rockies have done better these past few years is just dumb luck; that, and the fact that this Tulo guy is pretty good.
(goldgarf from Denver)
I think many folks recognize that O'Dowd's focus on groundballing starters has been one reason the Rockies have remained competitive in recent years; they've been in the top 6 teams in GB% every year since 2007, which has helped cut down the number of homers allowed. That's not an accident at all, nor is the fact that they have some outstanding young talent beyond Tulowitzki. There's a lot to suggest Jim Tracy is doing more to prevent them from wining than O'Dowd is. (Jay Jaffe)
2011-03-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Dexter Fowler will hold onto a full-time OF job in Colorado? If so, should we expect 40+ steals and a decent average? He seemed to pick up his game last year in the second half after his demotion to the minors. However, Jim Tracy seems to be a bit fickle with his OFs and other than CarGo is always splitting time among a few guys.
(Pete from Bronx)
The big change is that Hawpe is gone now, leaving only four OF's for three spots, and Spilborghs seems to have pretty clearly played himself into the 4th OF/platoon role. 40 SB seems somewhat optimistic, but with a fast start (and the resultant job security), 30-35 seems a pretty solid expectation. (Cory Schwartz)
2010-06-07 18:30:00 (link to chat)Do Machado and NOT Jim Tracy own the same type of telephone?
(DavidLADodgers from Sonoma State University, CA)
I think it's possible! (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-05-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Free Iannetta!
(BR from NYC)
Indeed!. He is no favorite of Jim Tracy but I know the Red Sox would love to have him. (John Perrotto)
2010-05-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Marc, do you have any concerns about Ubaldo Jimenez holding up over the course of the season given the high pitch counts that Jim Tracy has been letting him run up? Is he someone to consider shipping out if you can get back a Verlander-type return?
(Aaron from YYZ)
Wasn't there a study a few years ago that said that 180 innings at Coors felt like 200 innings elsewhere because of the way the air was? I'm not *concerned* I guess, but if you can get someone of equal value or better for Ubaldo, it may be worth exploring. I'm much more of a softy when it comes to pitch counts (as long as their mechanics aren't changing at 110 or 120 pitches, I'm not that broken up about it) but the consistent chase of 120-130 or so for Ubaldo this early is a bit disconcerting.

Could it be possible that Jim Tracy didn't ride down from the heavens on a unicorn to manage the Rockies, and that he actually just took control of a really great collection of talent that started playing well like it should have? (Marc Normandin)
2010-05-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Anyone who thinks Jim Tracy's Manager of the Year award wasn't largely a case of "Right place, right time" must have missed his stints in Pittsburgh and LA.
(Aaron from YYZ)
Again, this was before he traveled to Mt. Olympus, earned the power of the gods, got his six-pack abs back and brought the sword of Justice to Colorado along with superb managerial skills. We can't compare the two, they are just too different. (Marc Normandin)
2009-10-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)In your analysis of the Phillies/Rockies series, you mentioned how the Phils Offense was not well suited to hit against the Rockies D. But how about the opposite match-up? The Rockies only played .500 ball against lefties this year and the Phils can throw three lefties at them (four games, maybe five depending on the schedule). Isn't this an advantage for Philly? Also, can you do anything about the annoying Outback commercial that keeps covering up the screen?
(jschmeagol from college park, md)
No, I can't, but I've complained about it myself. It's absurd.

I felt the two teams' rotations were fairly even, which may have been overrating Ubaldo Jimenez against this particular lineup. I also didn't think Jim Tracy would play Brad Hawpe over Ryan Spilborghs. Not that that was the only factor, but man, can you leave Spilborghs and Chris Iannetta on your bench if you're serious about beating a lefty?

Anyway, with the Rockies having lost the Jimenez start and not having de la Rosa, their situation isn't that great. (Joe Sheehan)

2009-10-21 17:00:00NLCS Game 5It's hard to believe the Dodgers released Werth (who Jim Tracy felt was nothing more than a bench player) and that the Phillies were playing Geoff Jenkins ahead of him at the start of last season. (John Perrotto)

2009-10-12 15:00:00Phillies/Rockies Playoffs RoundtableI don't care how many saves the guy has: letting Huston Street, or any right-handed pitcher alive, face Ryan Howard with the season on the line is a mistake. Jim Tracy is making a huge mistake, and if it works, great, but it's a huge, massive mistake.

2009-10-12 15:00:00Phillies/Rockies Playoffs Roundtablefjm(anuel) (ny): Speaking of Minutemen... Is Jim Tracy "Lost" or just "Hittin' the Bong" for not playing Chris "The Big Stick" Iannetta, as there is "No One" in these "Situations at Hand" who hits lefties better than him on the Rockies?

Ah yes, love the Minutemen...

Iannetta had the highest OPS vs. lefties of any Rox hitter, and is at .265/.396/.534 for his career. Not only don't I sweep why he's not in the linuep tonight, I'm unable to come up with a rationale for why Tracy would play Torrealba ahead of him for an extended period of time. Even in a down year, he's a better hitter than Yorvit, and it's not like Torrealba threw out baserunners this year (14% to Iannetta's 26%). (Jay "Big Train" Jaffe)
