2013-01-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does the sublime Roy Oswalt pitch again or has the fork been stuck in him?
(Paul from DC)
Paul,

With pitchers like Miguel Batista still getting jobs, I have to assume someone out there would give Oswalt a contract if he wants it. I don't know if he wants to still pitch, but it wouldn't shock me if he's on someone's roster come July. (R.J. Anderson)
2012-05-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)You're the surprisingly in-contention Mets. Why keep running 41-year old Miguel Batista out there every day? He's not a viable starter on a contender, and Harvey is waiting at AAA. Are they playing super-2 games with Harvey, or do they actually think Batista is solid?
(Dan from Brooklyn)
I don't see how it's possible to think Batista is a solid pitcher at age 41. Solid clubhouse guy, yes, solid writer of thrillers about serial killers, sure (look it up). But solid pitcher...I don't see it, and the Mets aren't dumb, so I doubt they do either. Batista was a low-BABIP mirage last season, but I'm not sure anyone who plays fantasy is fooled by low BABIPs at this point, let alone the smart people who work for teams. Harvey is pitching well, but probably not so well that he has nothing left to learn at Triple-A. The Mets say he isn't coming up soon, but regardless, Batista's days are numbered. I thought he was done after 2008, so it's impressive that he's managed to cling to major-league life this long. Still: 15 walks, 12 strikeouts. (Ben Lindbergh)
2008-10-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)Buchholz pitched about 140 innings between MLB and AAA. How is that a "lost" season? He didn't pitch well with the Sox, but isn't the experience of the year worth something?
(JL from Portland)
It's a lost season in that he was a replacement level pitcher who was basically interchangeable with - Miguel Batista? Mark Hendrickson? Josh Fogg? - somebody like that. A more valuable season could have flipped the AL East standings, perhaps even giving the Sox home field advantage throughout the playoffs, for one thing. For another, it's a reasonable assumption that Buchholz will be a better pitcher about 6 years from now when he costs more money and has leverage on the open market.

That said, the Sox are in the playoffs, his arm is still attached at the shoulder, and the experience of dealing with adversity is a lesson not to be taken lightly. Stuff happens, and he and the Red Sox will hope for better just like Hughes and the Yankees will. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-06-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)If the Mariners wake up, which team is most likely to benefit from the fire sales (outside of the Ms themselves). Thanks!
(Tony from Brooklyn, NY)
Well, there are a lot of contenders who can use a startig pitcher and the Mariners seem willing to move Erik Bedard, Jarrod Washburn and Miguel Batista. The Cubs really seem to want Bedard, so I'll say they would benefit the most _ if Bedard gets back on track. (John Perrotto)
2008-05-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Miguel Batista mentioned about a month ago that he had "figured something out" as far as fooling hitters go. He's been pretty bad this year...what did he figure out?
(Arnold Layne from Cambridge)
Maybe he figured out he's a better novelist than a pitcher, but a better pitcher than a poet. Which ain't saying much. (Jay Jaffe)
