YearComment
2004 One of the club's madding herd of retreads, Bere will be pushing among Jason Stanford and Jeff D'Amico (the big one) for the fifth slot in the rotation. He's supposed to be recovered from last June's shoulder surgery, but since his shoulder is always a source of concern, it would be a bit much to expect him to put up a year like his '01 campaign.
2003 It came a year late, but eventually, Bere made the Cubs eat the bitter herbs of regret. He missed most of the last three months of the season with a strained groin and a knee injury. You already know the basics: if he’s at the top of his game, he’s an adequate fourth starter. If he isn’t, he’s Losing Pitcher Mulcahy. For the Indians, he joins Brian Anderson as a token “already has a baseball card” guy to get slapped around in the front end of the rotation.
2002 Shame on us for being completely unfair to Bere last year. More than for any other pitcher, tip your cap to Oscar Acosta for getting a worthwhile season out of Jason Bere. Not only did Bere stay pretty healthy, he produced 18 quality starts in 32 tries. Yes, he still has his limitations—any moderately patient lineup or one with some left-handed sock can hurt him quickly and thoroughly—but Bere has finally become a good third starter.
2001 With the Tribe, Jason Bere had only one quality start against teams with an above-.500 record. The team that signs him needs to take off the beer goggles, but it's already the morning after, Bere is awake, and it's too late for Cubs GM Andy MacPhail to chew off his own arm. Now MacPhail needs to find a way to make Bere leave without having to give him his phone number. A jacktastic fly-ball pitcher going to Wrigley? Better get those DJ Stewie Scott "Boo-yahs!" pre-recorded, because he's going to wear himself out calling Cubs' highlights.
2000 It isn't time to just smell the coffee--it’s time to pack the grounds into your sinuses. Bere had a nice run against lousy teams at the tail end of 1997. His lone quality start for the Brewers was in the second game of a doubleheader against a Pirates lineup that featured the three Browns, Tim Laker, John Wehner, Abraham Nunez and Dale Sveum batting cleanup. Ted Higuera could start a comeback against that bunch. He’s signed to guaranteed money significantly above the minimum, so he'll hold down a rotation spot until he hands it back in May.
1999 Yes, he looked good in a small sample. Yes, Don Gullett has gotten good at returning one-time star pitchers to form. The problem is that Bere's arm is still held together by twine and thread, none of his pitches are where they were pre-surgery, and his control is still weak. He'll stay in the Reds' rotation until June.
1998 I don’t think the relationship between his successes and having Gene Lamont as his manager were coincidental, and I don’t think his struggles and having Terry Bevington as his manager were coincidental, either. That’s called an opinion. His comeback was aided by facing some pretty weak lineups in September, so we’ll get a better idea of what he’s got left next spring.
1997 Considering the public blame game that surrounded whether his elbow was injured or if he had become Steve Blass, we may never see Jason Bere again. He had major surgery on his elbow near season’s end, and even at his most successful, he had serious problems with control, holding baserunners and keeping the ball in the park. His breaking stuff was never that outstanding, and the injury may well take his fastball away.
1996  Endured a disastrous season, with no highlights whatsoever. He pitched badly to every kind of batter, on the road, at home, at day, at night, by sea, by air... you get the point. If anything, he got worse as the season went on. Worse yet, there are no suspects, no serious injuries, and no attempt at an explanation. Consistently poor holding opposing basestealers, Bere allowed 36 steals in 41 attempts.
