2003 Like Rick Ankiel, Stephenson hasnt really been a part of the Cardinals since their playoff run in 2000. Its worth asking if the Cardinals kept pushing him out there too soon, as he broke down in April (the back), came back in May and was back on the DL by the end of the month (officially for the hamstring, which required surgery to remove dead tissue, but he was also having shoulder trouble), and then he was finally back at the end of August, but he wasnt ready to really contribute even then. Hes been re-signed, and hell have a shot at the fourth or fifth slot in the rotation, but theres little indication that he can pitch and stay healthy, or that hes got much left.
2002 He probably doesn't enter into the Cardinals' plans in 2002. Stephenson's elbow rehabilitation still has a ways to go, and he'll have an opportunity to work his way back to health with an extended rehab stint in the minors. He won't be at full strength until at least the end of the 2002 season.
2001 Garrett Stephenson was a godsend, giving the Cardinals 200 above-average innings. His peripheral numbers don't jump out at you, but he could be a middle-of-the-rotation starter for a couple of years. He may have earned the coveted Tony LaRussa halo, which would prevent younger pitchers from having a chance to earn his job in a fair fight. The injury that knocked him out of the postseason doesn't appear to be serious.
2000 One of the fun things that's developed over the last two years is the rivalry between the Cardinals and the Phillies, not just because of Drew but also because of the guys they've swapped. Bottalico has his beef with Terry Francona, and LaRussa has his problems with Ron Gant. But the best part is Stephenson, who clearly detests the Phillies organization for mishandling an injured ankle and shoulder in 1998, a dispute that ended up in a grievance hearing, which he won. Hes also had a war of words with Curt Schilling, one he might win since he's the healthy one now. While he'll never have a year as good as his partial season in 1997, he can be a good fifth starter.
1999 His big mouth strikes again. Thrown into the Bottalico fiasco, so he's the Cardinals' headache now. Not a good bet to ever do anything like his 97 again.
1998 An afterthought, literally, in the Zeile trade: he was only made part of the deal after the Os realized theyd released one of the players they were trying to include. Hed had some fair years in the Oriole system, but nothing to make anyone think he had a season like this in him. He suffered some sort of forearm muscle strain in August, should be healthy for this season, but Id be surprised if he pitches this well again.
1997 When the Phillies traded Zeile and Inky to the Orioles, they thought they had gotten Cal Maduro and Don Florence. Trouble was, the Os had released Florence the day before, and so they settled on Stephenson to finish the trade. Hes relied on a mediocre fastball, slow curve and changeup: less power than the Uzbekistani navy. Somehow, he avoids getting torched. Fear may be part of it; hes hit 29 batters the last two seasons. Even a poor fastball stings a little.
1996  Yet another pitching prospect, although not as polished as Haynes or Krivda. Pitched well in Arizona, under admonitions from coaches to use his fastball more and stop falling in love with his hittable curve.
