DateQuestionAnswer
2011-06-20 14:00:00Philip Humber, 9th in WAR for AL pitchers ... uhm ... please explain.
(Paul from DC)
He doesn't miss a ton of bats but his homer and walk rates are impressively low, and his .226 BABIP is insanely low (and unsustainable). Bet on some significant regression.

That said, Humber's working with one of the game's best pitching coaches in Don Cooper, so I don't think that he's incapable of surviving as a back-end starter. He's going to need to get more groundballs though, particularly in that ballpark. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-11-23 13:00:00Would Vazquez's drop in velocity give you pause as a GM looking at FA pitchers?
(Matt from Chicago)
Absolutely, though I think his issues have more to do with mechanics than with injury. The right pitching coach may be able to straighten him out. Then again, he was nothing special in Chicago under Don Cooper, who's one of the best in the biz, so who the hell knows? (Jay Jaffe)
2009-03-06 14:00:00I don't know about the other two, but Danks only really figured it out after the pitching coach in Chicago taught him to throw a cutter. It's hard to knock the Rangers for that.
(Aaron from YYZ)
Well, why can't they get their own Don Cooper instead of whomever they've had as their pitching coaches over the past decade? And why can't they keep their guys healthy? I do think that the arrival of Mike Maddux marks a step in the right direction, but it's a first step. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-04-25 15:00:00White Sox: Fluke or for real?
(Izzy from DC)
I'm not a huge believer in the White Sox, but it's clear that at least in the early going, two things are going very right. First, you've got the bouncebacks from Joe Crede and Carlos Quentin that have helped resurrect that offense while marginalizing some rather unproductive players. Second, them Gavin Floyd and John Danks appearing to have finally put it together. These were well-regarded pitching prospects who've taken a long time to live up to their billing, but with a good coach like Don Cooper it shouldn't be terribly surprising to see them make the kind of nonlinear jumps that pitchers do when they finally Get It Together. (Jay Jaffe)
