2013-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think there's anything to the Jack Z accusations coming from the Seattle Times piece featuring Eric Wedge and the other former Seattle employees? And beyond speculation like that, if the Seattle organization is really as "dysfunctional", in whatever way they're defining it, as the group says, does that affect the developmental outlook for guys like Walker and Paxton? Uninformed logic might speculate that if any of this criticism relates to how well Seattle develops young players, and things are not as they seem there, then perhaps it's a minor reason to downgrade a prospect's likelihood to reach a lofty ceiling?
(Erik from Longwood, FL (sunny and warm))
I think the article was pretty spot on, based on the things I've been hearing over the last few years. Dysfunction is a bit of a shallow term given the fact that the definition suggests a negative consequence, which I don't believe should always be the case in the face of chaotic or "dysfunctional" actions. As it pertains to the Mariners, the plan might end up working; the team should be more competitive in 2014 than it has been in previous years. Winning is all that matters. It doesn't have to be pretty, and the process doesn't have to be smooth to be successful. If it works, call it a functional dysfunctional process. If it fails, like most failures, we can put all kinds of labels on the problem and dissect it accordingly. (Jason Parks)
2013-08-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)The first manager to get fired in season will be...
(Ted from Chicago)
You know, I'm not sure if we will have anyone fired in-season. There are arguments for various managers but guys like Ned Yost and Eric Wedge have had some success as of late. I don't think Bud Black is going anywhere. Maybe Ron Roenicke if Milwaukee opts to clean house. Otherwise there aren't many obvious candidates for me. (R.J. Anderson Trade Deadline Wrap Chat)
2012-11-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Really M's? What does a brother have to do to get a pink slip these days?
(Chone from Seattle(maybe))
If Figgins is around tomorrow, we have to believe one of two things is true; 1) they have a trade in the works to dump him and at least a fraction of his salary or, 2) He's to Eric Wedge as Bobby Ayala was to Lou Piniella. (Jason A. Churchill)
2012-06-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)According to Pythag the Mariners should be at .500, but instead are posting a 24 and 32 record. Which happens first, Eric Wedge fired as Manager or Dan Hultzen called up to the team?
(Paul from DC)
I don't think Wedge has done a bad job in Seattle, given what he's had to work with, but he would certainly have to be on any short list of managers on the hot seat. (Bradley Ankrom)
2011-07-13 12:30:00 (link to chat)Does Leland pitch Verlander till his arm falls off?
(Paul from DC)
Evidently--Verlander has the second-most Pitcher Abuse points in the majors, and he's averaging 119 pitches per game, with a high of 134--but at least he's doing it in pursuit of a pennant. What's Eric Wedge's excuse for overworking Felix Hernandez? (Ben Lindbergh)
2010-10-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Obviously Mike Quade's late season performance has made him a serious candidate to win the Cubs job, but has he also raised his profile enough to be in the running for other managerial openings?
(Trust Fund Baby from Lakeview)
I think Quade has raised his stock to the point that he is a legitimate candidate. He certainly became a fan favorite with the strong late finish and that has taken the pressure off Jim Hendry as far as feeling he must cave to public pressure and hire Ryne Sandberg. I get the feeling, though, that the Cubs want someone with major league experience and my gut feeling is that Eric Wedge is at the top of the list. (John Perrotto)
2009-07-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Can I call you Kage? Also, can you give me a reasonable answer as to why Eric Wedge won't play Matt LaPorta?
(bigrick0016 from Cleveland)
A. I prefer KG, but if that works for you, it's cool. I have a thing against "Kev" though. B. No, no I do not. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-03-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think the Indians are going to play their infield out of position all season? Who should take the blame for that if they do?
(Rob from Brighton)
Eric Wedge. This should have been the first decision in spring training. Peralta even played some third base in winter ball. The defensive difference between DeRosa/Peralta/Cabrera and Peralta/Cabrera/DeRosa has to be two wins. All three guys would be better. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-02-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who is the first manager to be fired this year?
(MarinerDan from SF, CA)
I'm going to go with Eric Wedge. Tough call, but expectations are present in Cleveland and he doesn't have a lot to fall back on if they start poorly. Throw Bob Melvin in the mix, too. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-12-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)What F. Carmona do you think we will see in 2009. The 07' or '08 version and why
(Will the Thrill from NE)
Eric Wedge said he is throwing well in winter ball and completely healthy, which is a good sign. I think he'll bounce back with a really good year. (John Perrotto)
2008-08-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)People in Cleveland are clamoring for Jhonny Peralta to move to 3B. Isn't he one of the best SS? Wouldn't the Tribe be better off signing a one year stop gap or giving Wes Hodges the gig in 2009?
(warclub from Strongsville, OH )
Asdrubal Cabrera is the best shortstop the Indians have, and should be playing there. Whether that means Peralta at second base, shortstop or another team is irrelevant.
Eric Wedge pinch-hit Jamey Carroll for Andy Marte the other day in a high-leverage situation. Why? What good is the rest of your season if not to find out if Andy Marte can be a major leaguer? (Joe Sheehan)
2008-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)What can we expect from Kobayashi this season? Any chance this is the contender to the closer throne that finally knocks of Borowski?
(Jim Clancy from Exhibition Stadium)
The Indians have far better bullpen arms to replace Borowski. Kobayaski is more of a solid bullpen arm -- he doesn't have closer stuff, but he adds good depth.

Maybe Keyser Soze will show up and change Eric Wedge's mind, who knows. (Kevin Goldstein)
