2008 Things get messy for every situational hero towards the end, but at times it seems like side-arming southpaw Mike Myers will give that pink bunny a run for his money.
2006 The most extreme LOOGY in the game today, Myers shut down lefties (.158/.198/.211) while turning every right-handed hitter into Rogers Hornsby (.385/.510/.641). Although valuable against the best left-handed hitters in the league, he cannot not be brought in if the other team is likely to pinch hit. When Giambi, Sheffield, and Matsui are coming up, you can`t ask Myers to face all three-his split is too extreme to allow him to do anything with Sheffield other than intentionally walk him. Roughly a third of the batters Myers pitched to were righties, which demonstrates the risks inherent in relying on this kind of pitcher. Signed by the Yankees to a two-year deal; we`ll see if Joe Torre was paying attention.
2005 Of all the Red Sox's mid-season bullpen acquisitions, only Myers and Leskanic actually made it onto any of the various post-season rosters. Myers held southpaws to a .242/.336/.354 line in 2004 while getting killed by non-lefties to the tune of .323/.421/.538. He's the definition of LOOGY, a fact that will keep him employed until the rapture, but he's not the shut-down reliever he once was.
