DateQuestionAnswer
2013-04-12 14:00:00 (link to chat)You gave Yovani Gallardo an "F" in the Starting Pitchers Guide and had issues with the mechanics of a few different Brewers pitchers. Is it an organizational philosophy of high arm slots in an attempt to get downward plane on the ball?
(Steve from Milwaukee)
That certainly appears to be the case, as all of their top pitchers are over-the-top guys with poor posture and shallow release points, including Gallardo, Estrada, Fiers, and Peralta. The trend even applies to former Brewer stud Ben Sheets. I had hoped that story was over in Milwaukee after they hired Rick Peterson, but now Peterson is gone and the trend persists.

Great observation, Steve. I wrote about the details, contrasting it with the Rays organizational philosophy, in this article: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=19895 (Doug Thorburn)
2012-07-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will Ben Sheets be worth owning down the stretch in a 12-team mixed league?
(Alex from Anaheim)
It goes without saying that Sheets won't continue to post a sub-1.00 ERA, but I'm skeptical of him even pitching to his 3.63 xFIP. Batters are offering at pitches out of the strike zone at a rate 7.2 percent less than the league average. He's starting batters off with a strike just over half the time, 51.4 percent, a rate that is way below his 62.9 percent first pitch strike rate in his career. He has yet to give up a home run, batters are hitting line drives at a 26.5 percent clip, and he has a stand rate of 94.4 percent. His fastball is operating in the 89-91 mph range according to Brooks Baseball. There is serious regression coming, and there is also the added risk of injury Sheets carries. I'm passing. (Josh Shepardson)
2012-04-19 14:00:00 (link to chat)Jordan Zimmermann has pitched like an ace the last two seasons, but has a losing record over that time, because the Nationals simply don't hit when he pitches. It seems that some pitchers are doomed to poor run support. Do you know of any cases in which particular pitchers suffered eerily poor run support over significant stretches of their careers? I don't mean pitchers who labored for terrible teams, but ones that got poor support even if their colleagues did not.
(HalfStreet from Fairfax VA)
The first name that comes to mind is Matt Cain, who -- after being denied the win in last night's duel -- remains just 70-73 for his career.

Ted Lilly, in recent years, hasn't had a whole lot of support. He had the fourth-fewest runs scored behind him in 2009 and the third-fewest in 2010.

And, if we're talking about a single season, Ben Sheets in 2004 is in a league of his own. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-02-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Ben Sheets retired? I haven't see him linked to any teams this off-season.
(Zooey from LA)
Two winters have passed without him being linked anywhere, let alone signed, so I think it's safe to say that he has hung up his spikes. Which is a shame, because he was a very good pitcher who left Milwaukee too soon to reap the benefits of what he helped start. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-07-29 16:30:00 (link to chat)I don't have any illusions that the A's are anything but pretenders this season. But with Trevor Cahill and Gio Gonzalez taking steps forward and assuming a healthy Brett Anderson, what do the A's need to do this offseason to have a shot at the playoffs in 2011?
(Dave from Chicago)
The A's probably aren't going to be big spenders, so for them, it's really a matter of adding value. Getting someone like Ben Sheets clearly didn't work, but smart risks are obviously something the A's need to be good at to succeed. They have a lot of young talent, so most of their success is going to hinge on those players improving. (Matt Swartz)
2010-04-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of Brandon Webb's longterm outlook? Does a contract of 3yr/36M seem reasonable for this offseason or is he in the 1 year territory?
(Zeke11 from Det)
3/36? Are you kidding me? The guy is on the path to not pitching for two seasons and you'd offer him a raise? Maybe - MAYBE - he ends up pitching a bit and with the Ben Sheets deal, I guess almost anything is possible, but there's no way I'd do anything more than a Rich Harden deal for Webb unless he comes back and looks lights out. At that point, new ballgame. (Will Carroll)
2010-03-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hey John, Can you tell us anything positive out of the A's camp? Things seem redundant. This is their fourth year in a row with a Sheet-load of health questions going into the season.
(ashitaka from long beach, ca)
Adam Rosales, who they got from the Reds for Aaron Miles, has been outstanding. There's some good news, though Ben Sheets pitching well would be better news. (John Perrotto)
2010-03-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Everybody is justifiably high on Brett Anderson this year. Any of the A's other young guys bust out? Who has the best shot among Gonzalez, Mazzaro, Cahill, Outman and Braden?
(Bellis from Oakand, CA)
I'm not that thrilled with their rotation honestly. Ben Sheets was a necessary addition. I do like their other guys, just don't feel like 2010 is the year. Cahill needs more K's if it's going to be him. (Marc Normandin)
2010-02-16 16:00:00 (link to chat)Thank you for the chat, Russell. Who do you think will be the more effective pitcher over the next few years: Ben Sheets or Daisuke Matsuzaka?
(Dennis from LA)
You can never go wrong betting against the guy who had the big ouchie. This wouldn't be a question if Sheets hadn't been injured. (Study idea: what happens to pitchers after they miss a year?) But Sheets was really really good before the injury, and Dice-K was above average. I'm going to cross my fingers that Sheets comes back. (Russell A. Carleton)
2010-02-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thank you for the chat, Shawn. Do you play fantasy baseball? Who do you like better over the next few years: Ben Sheets or Daisuke Matsuzaka? Brandon Webb or Javier Vazquez?
(Dennis from LA)
Assuming all are healthy, Sheets and Webb, based purely on per-start quality. Especially with Vazquez moving into a stadium that really doesn't play into his strengths, and DiceK coming off an injury himself.

But the reality is that Sheets is never going to be healthy over a "next few years" type period, and I don't know if anybody has ever been healthier than Vazquez. If I'm betting on quantity, gotta take those two. (Shawn Hoffman)
2010-01-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on the Mets roster as it stands now?
(Phil S. from NJ)
It's motivation for people to sign elsewhere, a la Ben Sheets. Jeff Francoeur? Little Sarge? No offense from first base or catcher? A rotation of Johan Santana and the Question Marks? And yet people keep flogging Luis Castillo--of course he took the money. You'd take the money. I'd take the money. He didn't make anyone offer it to him. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-01-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)So, any immediate thoughts on the A's signing Ben Sheets this afternoon? And if you could throw in a Star Wars reference, that'd make it all the better...
(lar from Milwaukee, WI)
Ben Sheets is like Lando Calrissian. He's got old friends in Texas and will appear at first to betray them, but in the end he will have a change of heart and sign with Texas next year for more money. Then he will help to blow up the Death Star before returning to the Cloud City. (Tommy Bennett)
2009-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Omar Minaya have a plan? A clue? A radio? Internet access? Sign Ben Sheets already. Forget about the entire Molina clan. Sign Bay, but not if it means losing focus on signing pitcher (see, e.g., John Lackey). p.s. Fela!
(Dan from Bklyn)
No, no, no, yes, and I have confirmed that was him asking for fantasy advice (true story was that back at one winter meetings he did tell a BP colleague that RBI were a key facet of his player evaluation strategy. Sheets: not at his current asking price. Bay: I wouldn't go 4x$15m, let alone 5 x anything. Fela: YES. New reissue series coming in 2010, but those two-fer discs are endlessly listenable. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-12-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Still a believer in Ben Sheets? Where do you think he'll wind up?
(Phil S. from NJ)
Absolutely, I'd rather put my money on Ben Sheets and a "maybe he's still that good" than Joel Pineiro and a "maybe he thrives away from Dave Duncan." But after the time away, I wonder if he wouldn't like to be on a contender. I could see him landing with the Dodgers on an incentive-laden deal after they clear up some of their arbitration issues and get a better sense of their own freedom of action. The Mets might be a similar sort of suitor. If he elects to change leagues, maybe Anaheim. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-11-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is it so wrong to hope the Twins will make even a modest free agent signing? Is it sad to wish for Adrian Beltre?
(P from MPLS)
I can see them springing for Beltre upon realizing that Orlando Cabrera at 2B and Nick Punto at 3B is fairly absurd for a potential contender, and they might be in line to offer one of those incentive-laden deals to a Ben Sheets type of pitcher, but they are yet to be linked to any truly impactful move. Granted, bringing in JJ Hardy had the effect of signing a young and solid SS, so it hasn't been all bad for Minny thus far. (Eric Seidman)
2009-08-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any update on Ben Sheets? Is he worth the risk for 2010?
(Travis from San Diego)
No update, not throwing yet. Once he does, we'll know more. (Will Carroll)
2009-06-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)How confident are you that Webb will be fine on his return?
(dantroy from davis)
Not at all yet. I want to see more, specifically him on a mound. Amazing how he's gone from CC Sabathia to Ben Sheets in the space of a month. (Will Carroll)
2009-06-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any word on Ben Sheets' rehab and team suitors?
(Jim from Portland)
Still not throwing. Having a hard time believing he's going to help anyone before September, if at all. (Will Carroll)
2009-06-05 15:30:00 (link to chat)Do you think Tom Glavine will get a look from anybody right now?
(Tim from Tampa)
Maybe the Nationals? At this point, a contending team isn't going to want to take a flyer on Glavine because the upside isn't necessarily akin to that of a Ben Sheets. And the non-contenders should probably be seeing what their young guys can do. (Eric Seidman)
2009-05-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Drop a comp on Tommy Hanson. Ben Sheets? Chad Billingsley (stuff-wise), A.J. Burnett?

Someone who saw him last year in Arizona threw a John Smoltz on him. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-02-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)"The Mets preferred Perez to Randy Wolf, Ben Sheets and the other free agent starters still on the market." Really?
(ssimon from Pelham, NY)
Works for me. I don't believe for a second that Ben Sheets is healthy enough to warrant a deal like what Perez got, and he's the only pitcher close to Perez left out there. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-02-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can the Brewers return to the playoffs with their rotation? Ben Sheets would obviously help, so why does it seem that they have no interest in resigning him?
(denny187 from WI)
I would imagine it's because they were the last team to get a good long look at his arm. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-01-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Jay .... thanks for the chat! This may be more of a Will question but, how is Ben Sheets doing this off-season? Will be he ready for Spring Training? Also, would Sheets be a wise investment for either NY club, and if so, how would your structure the contract?
(dianagramr from NYC)
Hello, Diana! I know that there's some concern with regards to the MRIs of Sheets' shoulder which may be affecting his signability. At the outset of the winter I thought a 2-year, $30 million deal with a vesting option would be appropriate given the assumption that he'd be healthy at the start of 2009, but the current economic climate and these new reports (which I haven't seen in any detail, to say nothing of his medical files) would lead me to cut the value of that deal in half and proceed from there even assuming a relatively clean bill of health. Furthermore, I think he makes more sense for the Mets and in an NL context than for the Yanks at this point in time. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-01-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)It appears that with the Giants signing Randy Johnson, the D-backs are in need of an additional starter to fill out the rotation. Although he's most likely out of the D-backs price range, what are your thoughts on them making a run at Ben Sheets? A rotation of Webb, Haren, Sheets, Davis and Scherzer looks awfully nice.
(Ryan from Phoenix)
I dont think you can have two guys in the rotation that you can't count on for 300 innings combined. You need to have 900 innings from your starters to be really good and 800 to even be considered. I like Scherzer a lot, but I'm not sure he can go that deep or stay healthy yet. Sheets, we pretty much know he can't. (Will Carroll)
2008-12-23 14:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think the market is for Ben Sheets? I'd love to see the Red Sox get him as I believe he's at least as good as Burnett and will cost have as much in years and dollars. Does 2/30 get it done for him?
(Joe from Tewksbury, MA)
Took the words right out of my mouth, Joe, that's about where I'd see his price tag making all sorts of sense to a contender. He's too much of a risk for that third year, but it might wind up being a situation where a vesting option with a reasonable target for vesting--akin to Kerry Wood's deal--gets it done. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-12-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)What is with all the bagging on AJ Burnett as being fragile, injury prone, and generally unreliable but then offering up Ben Sheets as a replacement suggestion? Burnett has pitched more innings than Sheets each of the last 4 years (in the AL East for a team that breaks pitchers no less!).
(Aaron from YYZ)
Sheets at 26M for two years is less risky than Burnett at 80M for five, though your research at least gives me more pause for thought. (John Perrotto)
2008-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dear Mr. Carroll: Is it OK if I sneak in an early keeper question involving four pitchers with various kinds of (health) concerns? I can keep two out of these four aces: John Lackey, Francisco Liriano, Ervin Santana and Ben Sheets. Who would you keep and why?
(bo9anderson from Amterdam, the Netherlands)
I'd keep Lackey (pitching for a contract, few health problems) and Liriano (healthy, good team). Liriano's not a clear choice over Santana. Sheets -- arm trouble plus I dont know where he'll play. Him signing in Texas or Houston would knock him way down. (Will Carroll)
2008-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Better odds: John McCain winning the presidency (Nate has it as 5.3%) or Ben Sheets pitching 150+ innings next year?
(Lincoln from Dallas)
Sheets doesn't have Diebold to fall back on. (Will Carroll)
2008-10-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)What contract would you offer Ben Sheets? Would he even be worth a short big money deal like Jason Schimdt got or is his health that risky?
(Brian from brooklyn)
Do we even know if he can pitch next year? I would make him a Lieber/Carpenter offer, but certainly nothing more than that. He's out of the "FA pitcher" bin occupied by Dempster, Perez, et al. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-07-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)How hard should the Rangers push to sign Ben Sheets this winter?
(James from Stamford, Texas)
He'd be a very good fit, granting the amount of risk involved. I also think there's going to be SO much money chasing SO few players this winter that they end up outbid in the end.

I cannot emphasize this enough: there is SO much money in the game right now that open-market contracts are all going to seem insane. (Joe Sheehan)

2010-04-05 09:30:00Season Opener RoundtableAfter watching UCLA get crushed this season, I think I'm still attempting to recover. But I've heard whispers that there are two other teams out there still playing.

Only 15 minutes or so away from seeing Ben Sheets make his first mound appearance since the 08 season. This should be good. (Steph Bee)
